What will grow around a cedar tree in coastal NC?

I have a huge cedar tree in my front yard; it is to beautiful to cut down and has withstood many a hurricane. Everything I have planted around it has died flower wise. Is there any shrub or plant that will co-exsist with this tree?. I would like to plant flowering shrubs if possible.
