I bought a baby Myrtle from Autumn Nursery last year, planted it, it leafed out nice, lost it's leaves in the winter, now it's May and I am just seeing little signs of buds off the branches... Is this normal? Shouldn't it have leafed out already. I live in zone 7B, Hansville Washington area. I was hoping this was a fast growing tree but....
Or is it just dead and I am hopeful that the little red buds on the branches are just that.
Red Crape Myrtle - Don't understand it's timing
If you just planted it last year, sometimes newly planted things are a little slower to leaf out in the spring because they've been busy working on getting their roots going. So as long as the buds do indeed turn out to be leaves I wouldn't worry.
I have several varieties of crepe myrtles in my yard and they all seem to have their own schedule. Some bud out fairly early but I have one planted by itself in front of my shop and it's always the last one to make a show. Those tiny buds you see are the beginning of the leaves. Within a week or so, they'll be open. I'm farther south than you, have established trees, and they have only been leafed out for about a month so I wouldn't worry.
