I think I may have a pest on my houseplants. I have seen some webbing on them and sometimes I think I can see little specks on the underside of the leaves. It seems to be causing the most problem on a certain escagot begonia I have. The edges of the leaves become dried and brown and eventually the whole leaf deforms. This is a very young plant, so it doesn't have to many leaves to spare. I have been spraying daily with warm water and Dawn dish soap. Giving each leaf a good blasting. Does this sound like a pest problem to you or am I dealing with more then one issue? thanks for any advice.

Pest on my houseplants
Webbing and little specks on the underside could be spider mites. The first symptom will usually be a stippled yellow pattern on the leaves, and then if you let it go then eventually the whole leaf will die. When you spray, have you been spraying the undersides of the leaves? Spraying the top is not going to do any good because that's not where the mites live, you need to clean off the undersides of the leaves. If you can post a picture of the plant, the stippled pattern that the mites make is very distinctive once you know what it looks like, I'm sure someone can recognize whether that's what you have or not.
I can't tell much in the first couple pictures, but in the last one it looks like it could be the yellow stippled pattern that the mites make. I can't be 100% sure though since the leaf is a little out of focus. But given that and you've seen specks on the underside of the leaves I think it's a reasonable possibility.
Did you just fertalize the plants? From what I can see in the pictures - if the ends of the leaves are turning brown and shriv up it could be fert burn...
If you didnt you could get some Diatomaceous Earth (works great with mites), Safer soap (IMO works ok on some pests - Ive never used it for mites) or Seven (I have not tried this yet but I heard its a great pesticide to use)
good luck

sorry for the out of focus pics my camera doesn't do well with close ups.
What other things could be causing the dry and crispy edges of the begonias. My lace leaf begonia was growing great then all of a sudden the leaves are drying up and falling off. And it is in a terrarium.
When I spray the plants I blast the tops and bottoms of each leaf. My poor little escargot only has three leaves left and two of them are looking bad.
I took more pics, but they are still fuzzy. Around the edges of the leaf you can see the crispy dry edges. It looks blue in the pic, but it is actually brown.
Thanks so much for your help
yes I did feed them with a weak mix of Miracle Grow and when I water I water a lot so it drains out the bottom.
I have burnt my plants before with the Miracle Grow - even using a weak solution, Have you tried SuperThrive? I've been using that lately and have had no problems.
I could be wrong but my plants have looked like that before and after trial and error thats what it turned out to be.

I think I may still have a bug problem on some of my plants, but as for the begonias you may be right about the feeding. If I sit and think about it, it seems this started after I fed them.
How can I bring them out of it. Should I change potting soil? Are begonias more tender about feeding then other plants?
Thanks again
I would just stop giving them the MG - they will recover (mine did) in time as the new leaves grow. Also add some hydrogen peroxide to your water - this helps the roots get air and will kill the pests (larve) that can be living in your soil.
Have you seen any more webs? IMO they are very easy to get rid of - so hopefully its not another critter.
You didnt feed the others the MG? Do they have the same problem?
your welcome.. anytime I can help!
bre
Yes I fed them all MG. The plant that I am seeing the webbing on is a ivy I have and the leaves look fine on it. I have been spraying it too trying to wash them off. The philodentron in the pic has leaves that look chewed on, but no webbing that I can see. The begonias have the drying, sriviling leaves. At first I thought maybe they weren't getting enough humidity so I put pebbles in the saucer under their pots. The lace leaf is in a terrarium and it was doing good and even bloomed. Then all of a sudden I noticed that the tips and edges of the little lace leaves were drying up and the new growth was drying and falling off.
Thanks again
all i can say is just backoff the m g with them all and see how they are 2n a few weeks.let mem kmow how it gos.
Good luck - hangin there....im sure you;ll do good!
Also make sure you dont overwater
