I put A LOT of bulbs in last fall. I covered them with card board right away so the squirrels couldn't dig at them. I forget to take the cardboard off till early spring when the snow started to melt so I don't think squirrels are the issue. I also don't see any signs of digging by them. I have dug in a few areas where I KNOW I planted bulbs and they are simply GONE!! I planted 13 Rococo tulip bulbs and only one came up!
I haven't dug that particular section yet, but based on what I have seen elsewhere, I imagine they have disappeared as well.
I know we have grubs (which we aren't sure what is best to get rid of them) and the resulting moles. Will moles eat tulip bulbs??
What are the possibilities and what are the remedies?
Help! What ate my bulbs and what do I do????
Moles won't eat bulbs per se (they're insectivores, not vegetarians) but if your bulbs had started to put down roots and then the moles tunneled around in there, they could have destroyed the roots and prevented the bulb from coming up but I doubt they would have accidentally eaten more than a couple. Voles will eat bulbs, so if you've got any of those they could be the culprits. Otherwise, how decomposed was the cardboard when you removed it? If it was already breaking down then the squirrels could have got through it with no problem.
How do I know if I have voles? Much of the cardboard was still in one solid piece, having been frozen all winter long, it had not decomposed much at all.
What do I do about voles??
bumping this up because no body seems to answer my question:
What do I do about voles??
