Help with a conservatory.

We have recently moved into a new apartment in Cairo, Egypt where we have a 150 foot balcony plus another smaller one and two conservatories. One has conservatory has perfect conditions for my cactus and succulent collection, which are thriving. The other conservatory which is 25’ x 20’ is proving a problem. Three of the four sides are floor to ceiling glass but there is a 70’ mango outside that means there is little direct sun but reasonable light.

There is no question of cutting down the mango tree which is about 150 years old and it already hanging with fruit although they are only the size of a very pea at present.

Our climate is similar to US Zone 8a.

I would like to grow some shade tolerant vines, plants with variegated or colourful leaves and anything that will flower.

Any suggestions?

Your help would be much appreciated.

Caladium and coleus have very colorful leaves-red, pinks, white, oranges.... and prefer shade. Vinca is viney, not sure if it grows up, but I know it spreads on the ground. It can come variegated and with blue and white flowers. I think there's also climbing hydrangea. Hydrangea bushes and azalea bushes love shade and acidic soil, and I think they would do well in your area. Huecheras also grow well in the shade and are very colorful. Hope some of these point you on the right track!

Thanks for the colourful list of suggestions. Its quite a challenge for me as I'm more used to searching for dought tolerant plants for the gardens. On average we get three or fours days on rain in a year!
