I have a Star Magnolia that had very very heavy scale. It was just covered in the little bumpy wart like thingys. It was nearly dead two summers ago. The tree is about 8 feet tall with three main trunks each about 1 1/2 - 2 inches thick. The trunks are cleared up to about 5 feet. Last spring (2007) I treated heavily with dormant oil and the scale has all dried up and is now gone. The tree did better last summer but still not as lush and full as the other Star magnolias that I have. I have noticed this spring that it is doing fair but not performing like the other ones. The leaves are smaller and a lighter more yellowish shade of green. There are several new shoots coming up from the ground around the trunk. Should I let these shoots grow and cut down the rest? Or should I let the shoots grow but leave the rest for now? Or should I get rid of the new shoots?
