What is the proper way to plant a tree or shrub on a steep hillside? I know that you normally want to leave the crown slightly above ground level but what do you do on a steep hillside. If your hole is 15 inches deep on one side it might only be 5 inches deep on the other side due to the steep slope. If you leave the crown level with the higher side then a part of the root ball is exposed on the lower side. Do you just try and pack some dirt around th other side? Seems like most of it would erode even with mulch on top.

This page has good instructions and a picture--let me know if you can't open it and I'll look around for something else (it's a pdf file, so you have to have Acrobat reader on your computer in order to view it)
