Tomato food & Cuke question

Pearisburg, VA(Zone 7a)

Any suggestions for plant food for tomatoes? Is Epson salt good for them?

I have NEVER had luck with any cukes. I have planted in hills, not hills, etc. They usually end up with yellow leaves and few cukes, very few. I've tried pickling cukes, burpless, you name it and I just can't grow them. Why do my leaves wither and yellow? I give them sun but not during the heat of the day, they get watered, I don't know what's wrong.

Cukes are pretty heavy feeders. Do you mix in any compost? If you don't make compost, you could buy composted cow manure (Black Kow is a good one that isn't loaded with sand). I always dig a good sized hole and mix in LOTS of compost. I also mulch them good with wheat straw to help them hold in moisture. For what it's worth, I've used Burpee burpless for the last 25 years. I have tried Wal Marts "burpless" variety and they just didn't grow , thrive or produce nearly as well as Burpees.

Thanks - no I haven't been composting the holes. I'll do that this year, just like I did my new roses and clematis. I learned the hard way it's better to have a $20 hole and a $5 rose than the other way around.
