last year in the fall my friend let me dig up a red maple from his creek bank it was 6 foot tall while digging I had to cut one long root get it up I got up a pretty big rootball with it planted it water the red leaves stayed on for week this year it did not come back why would this have died it started trying to spout from the roots why would the top have died

Lots of things can go wrong with transplanting, and it may be a little hard to figure out exactly what happened this far after the fact. Not getting a big enough rootball is something that's pretty common with transplants, or when it was newly transplanted maybe it was a bit more sensitive to cold than a more well-established tree would have been. If it's trying to sprout from the roots though that means it's not dead, maybe the top will come back too and it's just a little slower than the sprouts from the base.

You may have damaged the tap root. Give it time. They are slow growing trees. For several years, all it's energy is spent on root growth. You won't see much action above ground. Mine is probably 6 or 7 years old now. Last year it really put on growth. I think I bought it at Lowe's. It couldn't have been very big when I got it since it had to fit in my Wrangler. It's finally looking like a tree.
