I bought some trees from the Arbor Day Foundation about 7 years ago. (pretty much just sticks when first planted) All were planted in a garden for 3 years, and then transplanted to their permanent locations about 4 years ago. (nice sunny location, 25ft apart from one another) The only survivors are 1 bradford pear, 2 flowering crabs, and 1 dog wood. The bradford pear is the only one that gets flowers. All the trees seem to be growing beautifully, just no flowers! Our 1acre property also has several apple trees that always bloom profusely. Any ideas on why the crabs and the dogwood don't flower? (The crabs are about 10ft tall the dogwood is about 4 ft tall) Are they too young? Is it possible to get trees that will never bloom? Help!
trees not blooming
I don't know if Arbor day grows their trees from seeds or if they start them from cuttings, but particularly if they're started from seed some trees can take a number of years to bloom. I don't have experience with any of these grown from seed so I don't know how many years to expect if things are normal otherwise. Bradford pears tend to be pretty short lived, so that may be why it has gotten around to blooming, the others know they have many years ahead of them so they can take their time. Do they look healthy otherwise? Trees that are stressed by insects, fungus, or cultural issues could also be less likely to bloom, but if they look healthy then age could be a possibility. The other possibility is that they're something else other than dogwood and crab, Arbor Day mislabels their plants fairly frequently.
Thanks for the info . I'm pretty sure all the trees are the types I've stated earlier, that is one of the avenues I first investigated. I've compared tree photos and leaf photos. The trees seem to be doing great. It is just the lack of flowers that has me baffled. I keep saying "I'll give them another year", I guess that's all I can do! Thanks again.
Dogwoods need to be rather mature before they begin to bloom, but I can't give you an age of when to expect them. I'd expect, with them at 4 ft. -- it should be soon, but you will know ahead of time, because they get a distinctly fatter "tip" of the branch when they are setting buds.
I'd "just" give them time -- and know that, whatever they are, they will eventually reach the point of maturity for whatever type of "bloom" the plant uses.
