blackberry lily (balamacanda?)

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

I don't know if that is the correct other name for the blackberry lily but anyway, that's not the big question. After my blackberry lillies bloomed they fell over into the next level of my rock garden. I think that was partially because the rose campion on the level above kinda went rampant and pushed them over. Anyway, they were crushing my impatiens so I just dug them up to transplant. I expected a bulb but there's just roots. Should I trim the leaves back? How deep do I plant them? (The reason I don't know from when I planted them before was because I thought they were some kind of La. iris - I got them from an internet friend). Help me out! They are out of the ground and in my kitchen sink!

Your belamcanda are behaving like mine, they tend to fall over. There is often more of a thickened root/rhizome, than a bulb. Usually the root is planted about an inch deep, or, like iris, at the soil level. I'd probably trim the leaf fans back to about 8 inches as I do with the tall bearded iris. What kind of Belamcanda are you growing? Were they from seed? [Hope you enjoy the Hibiscus trade!] John

John, I have no idea what kind they are. A friend in the stockmarket chatroom at Yahoo! sent them to me. He thought he was sending me "Tiger Lilies." I took a picture of them and posted them on my "profile" there, for a few laughs. I mailed your cosmos seeds this morning, btw.

That's pretty funny, he meant Leopard Lily, not Tiger Lily! Blackberry Lily is also used for Belamcanda. And don't forget my favorite, Candy Lily, or Pardancanda. Watch out for your Hibiscus seeds! John

Wow! I didn't realize that that was what your name meant! I have some red hot pokers I'm going to give away too, Want some?

Thanks, I have red hot pokers. They are wonderful plants that should be grown more. Nice for sharing too, as they can be divided like daylilies. John
