I have tall Ox-Eye daisies that are in full bloom now. They are so pretty. They have really multiplied since last year and I'm glad.
My question is when the first bloom is over if I cut them back will they bloom again this year?
Ox-Eye Daisie?
Looks like no one knows the answer to your question, Dancey. I'll take a stab at it. My rule of thumb is to always deadhead my flowers to keep them blooming. So far, it's always worked. Ox-Eyes are pretty tough flowers as far as I know so I don't think it will hurt them.
Thanks for your reply! Yep I didn't think anyone was going to reply.
I am going to cut mine back and see what happens. They have dry seed heads on them now and I will use the seeds for more plants.
Thanks!
You're very welcome. I asked a question a while back that didn't get answered--kinda frustrating, isn't it?
I have these growing as wild flowers and they come back every year, but do not rebloom. They are early spring bloomers and the Shasta seems to come up later in the summer. I really like them, but suppose they could get invasive in a small area so dead heading would keep them from reseeding so much.
Yes it does get a little frustrating. I guess everybody is real busy. This is a very busy time of year.
Windy you are right in that the daisies can become invasive. But I love them so much I have them planted in lots of garden beds. They do reseed readily. I think I will have blooms most of the summer due to the fact that baby plants are already coming up.
On the subject of ox eye daisies. Do they always grow tall? I would like some in front of my garden fence, but don't want 1 1/2 ft to 2 ft tall flowers, and the ox eye I've seen seem to be that tall. I'd much rather about 1 foot tall. What has been your experience? I am also interested in whether they rebloom, for that would be preferrable. Thanks!
My daisy's will only bloom in the tall stems. I mow over some things and they will bloom very very short, such as my brown eyed Susan's which will bloom as short as a couple of inches. But my oxeyes that also get mowed over sometimes, just leave the basal leaves and do not bloom when shorter than that. The leaves, however do not stay thick up the stem, so you just get the tall flower stem with the bloom atop it and basal growth. That is how it does for me here. The others may have a different experience.
If you like the daisy shape, you may want to try some of the lower growing melampodiums. They are very drought tolerant and my favorite, they Japanese beetles leave them completely alone. They are yellow dime sized daisies that cover the plant all during the growing season.
