I've been told by several friends who are more advanced gardeners that myrtle should work. However, two landscapers and a landscaping supply store told me NOTHING will grow under a Japanese maple once summer gets hot and dry unless I water it constantly and then maybe not even then. I understand the reason, but I thought I would ask on this forum if anyone has ever had success growing any ground cover under a bloodgood Japanese maple, and if so what. Thank you.
successful ground cover under bloodgood Japanese maple?
I'm not sure what "myrtle" is but here in NC we grow Pachysandra and Dwarf Mondo (Ophiopogon) under them with no problems.
Ajuga might work.It likes it dry.
I have Hosta, Ferns, Bleeding hearts and Iris.
We planted ajuga under ours... the colors match beautifully with the burgundy of the maple.
