Has anyone had good luck growing bougainvilla in zone 8b?
Thanks, Bill
Bougainvilla
I see that your thread is a bit old, but i will try ... I live in 8b, but in California. I have 3 boggies and they flower like mad during the spring, even thru the fall. During the winter they loose all their leaves, they always snap back with many "flowers" and the leaves come sometime after. The more stressed out they are the more they produce. Any how the winters here in Bakersfield it can get down to 28 or so, but for the most part it is a steady 35 to 40 at night, for about three months during the winter. They are on my patio, but really not sheltered from the wind. Hope this helps.

You're definitely in a borderline zone though, I'm in 9a and frequently lose them over the winter--once they survive enough winters to get really well established then they tend to do OK, but until then you may want to throw some frost cloth over them on cold nights so that they have a chance to get really well established.
I was in zone 8b last year. We had some and I thought they were dead for sure after winter but nope those things came back. And we'd started them from pretty small plants. They won't be HUGE vines if you choose to cut them back each year but still plenty of blooms. And if you want them big sprawling vine then yes, just cover them. Should do well for you!
We've not had much luck planting Bougainvillea in the ground, but large pots set amid the flowerbed work well. We've got one in the hottest bed and it's blooming its heart out! We will be bringing it indoors on frosty nights. They get killed back and do come up, but do so so slowly that you've lost most chances for blooms.
