bougainvillea tree

Trabuco Canyon, CA(Zone 10a)

I have a three foot tall staked bougainvillea that I want to make into a small tree form of about six feet tall. If I'm correct I need to take off all the lower branches up to where I want the tree to start and that will make the plant put it's energy into the top part? Also, the thin stem will thicken out into a trunk, correct?

This sounds right to me, but I'm also a newbie gardener. I'm very interested in the responses you get as well, as this has always been one of my favorite gardening dreams. Bougainvillea are my favorite flower, and seeing them in tree form is so gorgeous!

I've never tried to train one, but I do know I've seen ones that tend to have a more viney growth habit but others that are a little more shrubby. I suspect the ones that are a bit more shrubby will have a better ability to develop a trunk that will support the rest of the plant.

Do those grow in zone 4? They're so beautiful!!

They definitely won't make it through your winters unless you bring them inside, but they ought to be OK for the rest of the year. They like things hot and sunny though for the best blooms, and I'm not sure what your summers are like.
