May flowas

Carnegie, PA

My Krimson Queen finally bloomed. It started to in March, but all the buds fell off. I watered it too much thinking that would keep the buds from blasting, but it happened anyway lol. So this time I just left it alone and only watered it once....

I've always loved the flowers on KQ and KP---those are beautiful! I'm just like you--as soon as I see buds I want to flood the plant with water (I guess to keep those fat little guys from drying up) and, of course, it's exactly the wrong thing to do...If I can keep my hands OFF the watering can I should have h. cinnamomifolia, h. serpens, h. sheperdii, and h. cv. Minibelle blooming in the next couple of months....We'll see what the Hoya Gods allow...fingers crossed...

OOhh, obscura has one of my favorite scents, Awanda. Your nose must have lead you to it!

Wild plant, that aff. pubifera, Carol.

Oh, another one I've never heard of - camphorifolia. Love that foliage! And, what a beautiful bloom on that H. compacta! I have a small variegated compacta but it hasn't bloomed for me yet!

San Francisco, CA(Zone 10a)

I got so sick of mealie bugs hiding in the compacta coils that I banished it to my back deck, where it's dying a slow, painful death. How do you folks keep it from being overrun with the pests? I tried everything, including dunking the leaves in straight rubbing alcohol. Nothing worked. Sigh.

Julia, try Bayer's shrubs & trees systemic. You can kill the mealies with straight rubbing alcohol but do it in the shady area so you don't burn the leaves. I also tried neem oil but I can't stand the smell of it but some people doesn't mind smelling neem oil.

I agree with Jan...BATS is the only way to keep them clean!!!

San Francisco, CA(Zone 10a)

Found this unknown H. acuta/pottsii blooming in my office again this morning. The whole room smelled faintly of gardenia...sorry for blurry camera phone photo.

Is BATS safe to use inside with a baby, though?

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Julia, I AM impressed!!! No dust!!!! How do you find time! Oh...the hoya is beautiful...I love that family.

San Francisco, CA(Zone 10a)

When I have writer's block, I over and fuss with my hoyas. heh. nice distraction.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

OH yes....very safe. it is the same stuff they put in the flea medication you put on your dog or cat....

Mountlake Terrace, WA(Zone 8a)

Nice photo, and nice plant. Mighty fine leaves, too! Those are biggies!

Also did you notice that it appears in the photo that someone outside is trying to grab your Hoya?

San Francisco, CA(Zone 10a)

Ha, funny, Analog. That's a reflection of my hands....I'm on the second floor.

I realize that, and was just being a joker. I just wish I could get a little court jester under my username, so people can see me coming.

That is funny!

And obovata is blooming right now - it has about 5 umbels getting ready to bloom - this is the first! I'm particularly proud of this one as I received it as a cutting 3+ years ago when I first started collecting hoyas (BEFORE the addiction set in!).

Thanks Lin for the well wishes.

Good job on the Iris Marie. My plant is huge and three years old but not blooms. :(

I found this one hinding and in bad shape. Its a cardioplylla bloom with ants and some aphids. I don't usully have a problem with aphids....they are easily treated with soapy water spray but I did not catch this one in time.

(edited for bad spelling......I really should start reading before I hit SEND)

Oh my goodness ... that clemensorium bloom is stunning! Another new one to me! So many different hoyas ... I never knew!

Ric, hope you had a real nice birthday!

Saint Petersburg, FL(Zone 9b)

Thanks Awanda, I was happy to see it. Its been 3 years waiting. I think hoyas are good in developing patience skills.

Lin, I had a great day. I worked, but when I came home I had a dinner and cake surprise, then out with friends til 4 am.......geesh, I'm getting old. I was slow moving all day yesterday.

(Zone 1)

LOL, Ric ... wait til you get to be my age! 4 a.m.?!? I haven't been out at that hour in many years! But, Hey ... one is NEVER too old for the cake and ice cream! ^_^ Glad you had a great birthday!
