My daughter needs to know what kind of plant this is for her science project.
We live in Reston, VA (not far from DC) this tree is in our back yard.

Help! My daughter needs to identify a plant for school!
Sorry, I don't know the answer, but you should probably post your pic(s) and question in the Plant ID Forum: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/f/plantid/all/
The Folks over there can ID just about anything and usually in a flash.
If it's a tree it might help to also post a shot showing more of the tree so people can see the growth habit, etc. Does it ever flower?
Is it a part of the project that she learn to id the plant, or is that an aside?
There are many good id guides available at any library, as well as many herbariums and plant sites on the internet. Maybe you could look at some with her and find out what kind of plant it is? I know I'm personnaly not comfortable giving an answer to a question like this. It's not my science project, and other kids might not have this resource available to them. Sorry, jmho
looks like maybe dogwood
