I have just planted some Oakleaf Hydrangeas, Viburnums, and Itea plants.
The Hydrangeas are about 3 feet tall and were burlaped, the others were potted.
So (assuming no rain) how often should I be watering these? every day? every few days? once a week?
How often should I water newly planted shrubs?
How fast the soil dries out depends on a lot of variables including your soil type, temperatures, how much sun you have, etc. The best thing to do is check regularly by sticking your finger down a few inches into the soil and see how wet it feels. If it's still wet, then don't water but if it's starting to dry out then give it a nice drink.
The BIGGEST reason for failure with new plantings is not watering them in enough. Just keep them well watered every few days for the first few months. You want the soil far PAST the root ball to get wet. So the roots will travel outward away from the root ball.
