Seed Packet Question

Orange, MA

Hello,

I had two packets of perrenials that had a mix blend. I planted them in a new garden where I do not have mulch yet. How can I tell what's a weed to pull (when they begin to grow) and what's a new flower from the seed pack? I was thinking of waiting and see if I recognize the weeds and just pull them but wouldn't that give the seedlings a much harder start having to compete for nutrients?

Same thing happens to me with wildflowers although I tend to plant the wild flowers in my wild garden so it's not a problem. Just wondering how others do it

Thank you!

Unfortunately it's hard to tell until things get a little bigger, when they're very little seedlings it's usually impossible to tell what's what. As they get bigger, you can look up the plants that were in the mix in Plant Files, sometimes there are seedling pics in there that you can compare. And you can also take pics of unknown ones and post them in the Plant ID forum to see if people recognize them. In a perfect world you'd get rid of the weeds as soon as they sprouted, but as long as you get rid of them before they get too big your plants ought to be fine.
