Foggy here tonight - definitely some warm weather moving in . . . it's pretty eerie cool out there in the rainforest . . .

60 degrees out there right now. Wierd. What a strange time.

Whidbey Island, WA(Zone 7a)

And still over 50 degrees at 6:00 a.m. - wow!

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

Well it was a beautiful day here in Montucky. Tomorrow to be better. I think today got up to 72F.

Kingston, WA

today was perfect except for the wind which kept tipping over some trees. I hope for the same tomorrow. Heidi

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

Looks like we're down to about 72 from a high of around 87...my plants must be so confused...

Snohomish, WA

My current temp is 80 degrees, so I hit the magic number.I would have to say some like it while others are freaking out. The coleus is totaly confused and throwing leaves at me! But the cannas and the cardoon are loving it! Got to say I'm loving it too! Best my back and neck has felt in a month!

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

Currently the official temp at PDX is 92 here. The weather underground person near me is saying 96, but I'm not completely convinced it's that high. At least the gusty winds have died down.

Most of my plants are doing really well, but all my remaining tulip blossoms bit the dust, and my azalea and rhody blooms are looking kind of limp. Not the sort of weather they're used to blooming in...

Port Angeles, WA(Zone 8b)

Don't know what the temp was in Redmond (where we were today), but just got home and it's 60*...at midnight!

Kingston, WA

I'm a big wimp. I was too hot today. Had a huge migraine cause of it and the wind tipped stuff over but had a great talk with stormin gordon who was nursery hoping today. He got some cool finds. especially another cool podophyllum. Heidi

Snohomish, WA

Hi Heidi! Thanks for showing me around! Again! I love the way your gardens and the nursery blend together. I promise I will save seeds off that podo. I did well today! This is guacomole from Jim's yard. What a great man. I even bought one of his orbs, but have to wait till it is finished. I chose to have Jim make it bronze and he is even making a stand for it. We had a great time at a plant sale in the upper penisula. We picked up some hostas(suprise!!) and some other plants. Got back and made a new shade bed and then delivered some petasites to Tilly in Lynwood. Must have drove 200 miles today! And you are not a wimp Heidi! It was really hot at the nursery! And that wind was something else! I caught a few plants while i was there!

Wow - that's a beauty, Gordon! Sounds like you had a really good day.

Gordon, you are well on your way to being a certified member of the complusive plant buyer's club! I'm a lifetime member myself, so welcome to the club! Nice Guacamole. Which podophyllum did you get? The one I got at heronswood is doing great this year! Really nice leaves and nice big blotches of color. I bought P. hexandrum 'kaliedescope' and it's doing nothing. Nada.

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Gordon - glad you were able to help Jim with his addiction. Katye said you were no help with hers last week. You are a bonafide enabler. It sounds like you did get a lot done today. Pretty impressive.

And I'm so jealous that you have an orb - with a stand. Pictures of it when you get it, please.

It was too hot today, Heidi. I'll second you on that one. Hoping that you're cooling off and getting rid of the headache now. Make sure you aren't dehydrated. I'm still drinking iced lemonade. Should be a fun night of getting up and down.

Snohomish, WA

Oh I am truely at least a 20 year member of the compulsive plant club. Should have gotten my pin by now! The podophyllum was untagged, and Heidi wants it in the worst way! I should have just given it to her, she has been so nice to me! I still may, Heidi! I have the Kaleidoscope, Spotty Dotty, the native podo, and the one I got. Spotty Dotty is the only no show, but could just be taking it's time. It was up when I bought it at Dragonfly, but then it snowed 10" soon after. Here is the unknown podophyllum, any guesses?

Hmm. nope. Mine is slightly different. I got mine at Heronswood the week before it closed. So it's special to me. I'll have to photo it tomorrow so we can compare. Kalidescope is still a no show for me. I hate that!

Kingston, WA

Hi Pixy the ones from heronswood are delevayii. That is a nice one more clumping this one of gordons I think is hexagon something. Great more like the native peltum one. All very cool. Heidi

Oh good! Now I can label it. Thanks, Heidi.
I have to get back up to your place. I'm missing my umbrella lately! Oh, and it appears as though my Berberis Powpow is making a comeback. There is new growth. I think it just hated being disturbed in the planting. I'm glad because it was going to make me really sad to lose that shrub. It's so cool.

Okay, Gordon, here are a couple of other cool things for you. Arisaema uruashima.

Paris polyphyllum. This one you have to get up close to really appreciate. Take a look at its relative:

Hi Pixy where did you get your paris? Everyone loves your umbrella. I think I could sell a bunch of those. It is hanging happily at the checkout. Heidi

Snohomish, WA

Here is my kaliedascope. There are a few smaller leaves below this big leaf. Spotty Dotty is a no show though.

Here is one of my arisaemas, not sure which one till it comes out more. So far it looks like an alien coming out of the ground.

And talk about alien! Anouther arisaema that I will id when it leafes out. I love these things. I want one of every species!!

Thumbnail by NWGordon

Love them, gordon! But they do look a bit alien...
Heidi, glad to hear the dragonfly umbrella is attracting attention... and that it remains safely out of reach! LOL! My dh gave it to me for Christmas and it's one of my most favorite gifts he's given me. Can't believe I left it there! I must have been completely focused on the plants or something like that.

I got my Paris at Naylor creek at the Seattle FGS, I think. Either them or Far Reaches Farm. I haven't entered that one into my database yet so I'm going on memory alone.

Just got back from taking my son down to Randall to play airsoft this weekend. Saw large drifts of what they are selling as Darmera 'golden palms'. And lots and lots of Devil's club. Such a cool plant!

Burwash Weald, United Kingdom(Zone 9b)

airsoft?

devil's club?

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

Like paintball, but tiny plastic beadlike non-paint ammo replaces the "paintballs".

Devils Club - Oplopanax horridus. Grows wild in some areas of the PNW. I think it used to be considered an Aralia (spinosa???) and has medicinal qualities.

Snohomish, WA

Medicinal qualities? Yeah, like if you get in to it, go see a doctor!

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

oh funny you!
Did you finish your bathtub yet?

Whoops! That's Petasites 'golden palms'. Here are some photos for your enjoyment:

Here is the Petasites.

Here is the Devil's Club, and here is an article telling about this great plant:

I imagine that if you don't need healing before you encounter Devil's club, you certainly will afterwards.

Airsoft is the new paintball. I think it's mostly an American thing. Everyone else in the world knows how much we love guns in the good old U.S of A. We indoctrinate our children early. Airsoft guns shoot little plastic BB's. They are harmless if you wear eye protection. But some of them look very real, and at hour house we have a bit of a problem with that. But Andrew is really interested in the historical reinactments that happen in the airsoft community, so this weekend, Memorial day, he spent two days out in the mountains all dressed up in a WWII uniform, participating in a reinactment of the Battle of Normandy. They camped in wwII tents, they ate 'c rations', they studied the battle plan, trained for a day, then reinacted the battle with as much historical accuracy as possible. Many of the guys are veterans, or active duty military. Personally, if they have been on an actual battle field, I don't know how they can stand participating in this kind of reinactment. They have sound effects, pyrotechnics, helicopters, jeeps, etc. Supposedly it sounds very real. I imagine none of the vets suffers from PTSD or they wouldn't be able to stand it. The younger guys learn much from the older ones (probably not always things I would want Andrew to learn, but that's how it goes when a kid is 16). I took a bunch of photos while Andrew was getting into his uniform. Here's a link to a photobucket site where I stashed them. You will see a few things that give the date away here and there - like the sargent who is holding a digital camera. Otherwise, it's hard to know when the photos were taken. Andrew learns a whole lot about history participating in these events. And afterwards, he probably gets really tired of me inserting reminders about how different this is from a real battlefield, and how people did actually die and worse. But I consider it my duty to remind him. Being the parent of a boy is a very interesting experience.

Does he understand the discipline part of it? or is it just a game to him? Thats the real thing, helps to build young minds. Hope he is learning from it.
I like to see the reenactment of the civil war. and the Frontiersmen with their black powder rifles.
Into the west LOL

I doubt seriously he really has a good understanding of the discipline part of it, at least in terms of military discipline. They do have training, but in the end, it's just a re-enactment. No one really gets hurt. But he is learning, anyway. We've been to the Civil War re-enactments many times. They hold them at Ft. Steilacoom park, just down the road.

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

I think it will stick in the long run. I think. ^_^

Love to see one again. Been a long time. LOL
Was into it when my late DH was alive, he was so into it. My DH now not so.

Got to go Nite nite.
Hugs

They had helicopters in WW2?

Port Angeles, WA(Zone 8b)

Yep...they used Sikorsky R-4 / HNS-1, Sikorsky R-5 / HO2S-1 / HO3S, and Sikorsky R-6 / HOS-1. This link shows most, if not all, the aircraft used by the Americans in WWII.
