I am redoing one of my beds and I need to move an established azalea. Will it survive transplant?
Advise on moving an azalea
You have left it a bit late this season to transplant any shrubs/trees but at the end of the season when fall starts or early spring is the best time to do this work and causes less stress to the plant, the soil is slightly cooler then and the strong heat from the sun has gone also, this helps prevent so much stress to the plants/shrubs.
However, IF you really have to move the plant, some of us have no other option, then the best way to do it is by preparing the new planting area as well as you can, add as much peat acidic compost and leaf-mould if you have any to the new site, absolutely soak the new planting hole and then dig up the plant, NOT IF IT IS IN FLOWER or about to flower, wit till after this happens, but when you lift the plant out with your spade, dont go too close to the roots, but take out as much ball of soil as you can, then replant in the new prepared hole, give another water and cover with extra leaf-mould or other mulch to help keep moisture from evaporating too quickly around the root ball, it may be in your zone, you need to water more often for the rest of the summer so it has a chance to make new roots into the new planting soil. a feed with acidic plant food after a few weeks wont be a bad idea also. Azaleas dont have deep roots like some other shrubs, so be careful when you dig it out, Good luck. WeeNel.
Thanks so much for responding WeeNel. I think I am going to leave the azalea exactly where it is and work my way around it. It is about to bloom. As I stated in my post it is a well established plant that I do not wish to harm it in any way. It was one of the first shrubs I planted when I moved into my house 9 years ago.
