I found 2 really different (for me anyway) AVs at Home Depot.
End of April Blooms
Those avs are gorgeous, Diane. You are so lucky to have anywhere with plants like that locally. I would buy locally if we ever got any avs that nice!
yes it is and a fabulous fantasy at that! I have been having such a hard time posting on DG and moving from one place to another. DG is soooooooo slow for me. Is it for anyone else??????
Thanks! But no IDs! And then you have all those Streps, Lipsticks & Hoyas close by...
sorry Diane..........but I am leaving you as I just can't navigate on DG tonight.
well, I finally got back to here again. Yes, I can't complain about nurseries. We do have a lot of av vendors in south Texas , too. One in Victoria where I went Friday , one in San Antonio and the one called African Violet Nursery in Boerne, Texas.
Well, you jinxed me! After you left DG started moving kinda slow for me! LOL
It is moving slow for me also... Nice pictures ladies....
Susan
Hey Susan! Thanks! Home Depot had some pretty good AVs this time and Lowe's had NONE. It's usually the opposite.
Slow as a snail for me too.I was about to give up! Diane those are some great looking av's..good find!....
Dimmer I love that chirita!
Susan sounds like you were a busy bee today potting away..thats so much fun!
Mulletman..your kitten face has more blooms than I have ever seen on a plant I believe.....
Brenda gorgeous strep pics. You sound like me..lol..I just love seeing that very 1st bloom..very special and exciting.I keep giving mine pep talks..lol..grow babies grow..can't wait til they are big enough to share..
Gail those are cool looking gessies...
Lin so far tonight I have lost 2 posts..nothing aggravates me more..lol..at least i know its not just my computer....
Is it ever possible to ever find out the name for AVs like I got at Home Depot? They didn't have the Optimara label on them.
you might go to the AVSA photograph site and look under Optimara ..................or you might just go directly to Optimara and see if they have them listed...........
Let me try ............be back...........
Start here and look............and then I know there is another Optimara site where names are listed..........
http://www.avsa.org/Photographs.asp?Photos=O
Here is a lot of information by name........I think I went to variety index or something like that............
http://www.optimara.info/
So you think they might be Optimara?
What beautiful pictures everyone!
That kitten face is so cute!
Gail, that Sinningia is going to burst!
Bren, LOVE the Pajama Party!
Diane, AWESOME AV score!
I sure do love Fantasy blooms don't you? You never know what they are going to look like and no 2 are the same.
I had good intentions of posting pictures yesterday but hubby was in the mood to do projects and clean so I took advantage of it *lol*
Once we were done cleaning, I was exhausted and decided to play plants and separate babies rather than post pictures.
I will try to get some on here real soon though.
Wildsky.......I'm SO sorry you lost your job Friday! What an awful thing. I hope you find one that is even better!
Hope you all had a nice weekend.....yuck.....Monday!
Kim
Good morning,
Wow Gail, The sinningia's got so big and there full of buds.Mine isn't even close to flowering.
brenda,The streps look great.I love first flowers.
MullettMan,your kitten face strep is beautiful.
Diane,nice AV's you picked up.
Kim,nice chirita.
Susan, good luck with your repotting, your streps look great.
Diane, the reason I say they are Optimara is because Optimara is who supplies all the big places like Lowes, Home Depot, etc.
OK! Good to know. Well I did find one fantasy on there that was similar. But my blooms seem more ruffled- or does that make a difference? Or maybe just looks like smoother in the pic-
On second look, I think it may be it, called "surprise"....and the other one may be 'candy'? What do you think?
Diane that fantasy violet is gorgeous, I've never seen any with that kind of "style" when I see violets at the box stores! Good score!
Kim you've got to take advantage when DH is up for honey dos! LOL I'm working on mine to build me a pergola of sorts when the snow melts off the back deck. I devote time to his web page and then count the hours he has to spend doing a honey do for me! ^_^
Lin I started this thread from the top this morning just reviewing pictures etc and realized I had never commented on how perfect the symmetry was on the AV's that you posted to start with! Beautiful blooms and foliage and that great shape to boot!
This is Inky Frills, my mother plant bit the dust for some reason and I was happy I had put a leaf down. Just getting to enjoy the blooms again with this baby plant
~Brenda
Good Morning Brenda and Everyone :)
First Daffy blooming this morning :)
Maybe when I get home I will be able to post a picture of it :)
Brenda, our plants have ESP as my Inky Fingers is blooming now too :) SOOO cute.
Hubby likes to do everything as a team so when he's in the mood to clean, I jump right on that *lol*. Hey, get twice as much done *lol*
A pergola sounds BEAUTIFUL! I sure hope that if you get one that you share pictures as those are SO pretty :)
I hope everyone has a glorious day :)
Kim
Good morning everyone! I thought I had posted here this morning but it looks like my posts are vanishing again! Having "glitches" the past few days! This site is soooo slow this morning too. I remember someone saying on another thread a week or so ago that Monday's seem very slow on here. It seems to take forever to get from one page to the next. Of course I am one of little patience too. ^_^
Diane: Those two AV's are gorgeous! Our HD will have a couple here and there, always half dead from sitting in water and having employees standing over them with the hose! Our Wal-Mart used to sell Optimara AV's a lot but haven't seen much of anything in the past year. I remember seeing some at our HD with a label from Canada but don't remember the name of the nursery. I love that one with the fantasy bloom too but the one on the right has got to be my favorite! I just love those light pink blooms with the dark center!
I always have had trouble Identifying from the pic's at Optimara's website. But, I am not good at ID'ing from photo's at all. Someone said you can send an e-mail to Optimara with photo's and they will respond with the names.
Brenda: Thank you for the comments about those photo's of my AV's ... I can't take credit though ... they were grown by a lady in the local AV club - I have only had them a couple of weeks and will be lucky if I can keep them alive through the summer!
Well, we are supposed to have thunderstorms and rain blowing in this afternoon and it's starting to get cloudy outside so I am heading out to get a few things done in the yard before the weather hits! Hope everyone has a great day!
Today started out horrible! But good things do happen! They found my purse at church and so I got a ride back to Portland and picked up my purse and the keys to my car in the parking lot.
Now I am doing the happy dance as I got two wonderful packages. I posted my bingo win on the bingo thread and.................tah dah.............one of the best trades I have ever made came from Kim and she grew every single plant she sent.
I have 4 daturas:
Ballerina, Triple Yellow, Double Purple and Currant Swirl
3 streps she grew from a leaf and they are Watermelon Wine, Bristol's Tropical Twister and Streaker (so happy I am)
Then two real unusal plants that I am beyond excited about!!!
That would be Deutsche Kaiserin and XCodanthes 'Vista'
Is this trade not just the best! (She hasn't gotten anything from me yet) (LOL)
Oh, very nice Gail! You know they are happy healthy plants coming from Kim! You all amaze me with your propagating skills and patience!
Gail, what happened re: your purse? I'm assuming you lost/miss-placed it when you were at church yesterday and had to leave your car there and get a ride home? Maybe you posted what happened on another thread and I missed it, but, I am so glad you have it back and keys etc.
No, I didn't post what happened. I was sick at heart thinking that someone had stolen my purse at Sunday School. I had no key to my house (we had to break a door lock to get in) and no key to my car plus all my identifications, cards, checkbook, etc. At first I panicked as I thought about the inconvenience of it all and we looked for two hours (had the whole Sunday school class looking).
So, I went to bed last night thinking about it all and when I called the church office this morning at 9, Stephanie said, Gail we found your purse! It was on the back hanging from the chair I sat in but when the men folded up all the chairs after SS they didn't notice that my purse was hanging on the chair. Then they covered all the chairs with a bunch of boxes sitting on the floor!
I am so grateful to have everything back. Of everything missing I knew that the hardest cards to replace would be the 4 medicare and supplemental health cards I had. Replacing anything that comes from the government is a nightmare.
So, was everything still in the purse when you got it back? Hopefully no cash, cards or keys were missing!
Actaully I had a lot of cash because I needed to send money orders to the guys in prison that I write through the Kairos' Prison Ministry. Not a dollar was missing! I am sooooooooo lucky and blessed.
Don't you worry Gail, I can see you watered the Datura real well when they arrived.
Tomorrow morning they will be sticking straight up and looking great.
Try to get those in soil that holds more water. My mix is SO light that I have to water them every other day *lol* But I plan to pot them in pots that hold more water real soon as I'm getting tired of watering them every other day *lol*
Did Deutsche Kaiserin break in the mail? She looks a little floppy there and one arm looks like it might have been broken?
If so, cut the arm off......let it heal for a day or two on the kitchen sink and then dab a little rooting hormone on her and stick it *lol* Before you know it, you will have a pot full of it :)
I sure hope that one takes off for you :)
Can't wait to see the little hanging pot you put together with the X-Codonatanthus :) I'm sure it's going to be the cutest.
I would recommend hanging that one as you can see the flowers better with it hanging.
So glad you were happy with your box. I just KNOW everything will take right off for you :)
XO
Kim
OH Gail! You are one lucky woman!
Not just about finding your purse either!
Your new plants- namelt the Codonatanthus vista- which I had years ago and am determined to order another- is a wonderful little plant wit the prettiest shell pink blooms! But the other?! The epiphyllum/Disocactus one called DK for short is absolutley amazing when it blooms! Gorgeous pink blooms! It is one I've always been on the lookout for. If yo don't mind me asking Kim- Where did you find it?!
Ok, now I want to see a photo of that Disocactus! Is it one with thorns?? I LOVE Epiphyllums and I have to go google that one!
Ok, I googled and look what came up: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/616557/
Amazing Epiphyllum!
I won it on E-bay as it was the only place I could find it.
I won 1 cutting for $11.00 but that wasn't bad as the only nursery that sells it online wants $30 per cutting!
Luckily the guy on E-Bay was very nice and sent me 2 cuttings for $11.00 and I cut those both in 1/2 and have been cutting on it every chance I can :)
I have never seen blooms but of course I have been cutting it every chance I can.
I will SOMEDAY actually let it get big enough to bloom *lol*
Kim
The 2 top pictures are her Lin :)
Mine of course looks NOTHING like that (meaning as full *lol*) but she's going outside under the trees this year so I'm hoping for some great new growth and plan to cut her for rooting this fall :)
Kim
no, not one single leaf was broken, Kim!!! The daturas' soil was still wet and I took them outside for the night of high humidity. They will be fine until I pot them up. One is even trying to bloom.
You were so nice to send the "vista'....................can't wait to put her in a white 6" basket. I might be able to enter her in the next show!
I am excited about all of it..................3 streps grown by Kim!!!!!!!!!
Thanks Kim- I'll be on the lookout there.
I got so excited I totally missed the Streps you got! LOL
I've seen the Watermelon Wine somewhere and remember thinking it was beautiful. Have to look up the Tropical Twister- that sounds like the blooms will be luscious!
Gail those are some really cool plants you got from Kim.Glad the church found your purse and all is well..what a scare that had to have been for you !...Kim you have a major Green Thumb!!
I called the last two days blue wrist band days! Some church handed out these wrist bands to the congregation and asked them to wear them for 21 days or until they could go 21 days without whining or complaining. I decided to pretend I had my blue wrist band on at that time. Well, I haven't made it more than 1 day without being tacky or whining about something.
I now call these bad days blue rubber band days!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The plumber stayed for 6 hours today with changing out the garbage disposal installed improperly by someone else ............had to buy a 1 hp engine for my septic tank. I could have gone to nationals for what I paid the plumber today...............
Keep your blue wrist band on, Gail!! You can't make it two days...........let alone 21 days! (LOL)
Don't feel bad gail..we all have those blue rubber band days..LOL..I really like the idea of that blue wristband....I honestly don't know how well it would work for me either..seems like there is always something ya know..
When I told a good friend about this blue wrist band to remind us to be grateful and not complain, she said, "Gail, the wristband alone is not going to work........it may take tape over your mouth!" I loved her for saying that!
