omigosh -- now you make me want to check out the brug forum, which i've never done.

the reason that this site can bring out conflicts is that, face it, a lot of us LIVE here. we do our shopping, friendmaking, research, journalkeeping, everything ... and that's just me & i'm not housebound by illness as many DGers do. One thing I've learned is to treat each new "friend" as an unknown quantity until proven otherwise, because guess what? there are a LOT of people who cannot function in polite society but we don't often encounter them because they CAN'T hold down a job, they CAN'T play nice with the local garden group, etc ... But guess what they CAN do: Hit the power button on a computer.

People who are at war with others are not at peace with themselves.

Old adage. People are people everywhere regardless of the topic du jour. What I'm taking away from this conversation is to make some kind of a note to a person's post if it goes on a bit with lots of viewing and no responses. Thanks for bringing that up.

On the other side of the coin, I sometimes take a hiatus from DG. There's a personality or two in my favorite forum that just rubs me the wrong way. I go chill for a couple of weeks or even a month, then come back and the conversations have all changed. In all fairness, I'm sure I rub some folks the wrong way too. But I have learned to not hit Send when I'm feeling canktanerous. Just go chill. If there is any doubt in your mind at all whether you should send a message, just say no. Usually your gut knows best.

Happy gardening and happy chatting to all.

MaryMcP - Off topic, but how do you "do" italics? I know how to do bold, but not italics or underline or those quotation blocks.

If there's a thread with all these tips, I'm sorry, but I don't know about it. Tell me where it is, just don't bite my head off. ^_^

Ha Ha! Get it...in-light of the thread topic...

Rose Lodge, OR(Zone 8b)

and in the spirit of letting no query go unanswered, please allow me to jump in:

3g, there are few commands available to us. but here are bold & ital: < b>text and < i>text

now, if you took out the space in the opening commands, you would have bold and/or ital.

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

quotes are done [ quote ] no spaces followed with closing tag [ /quote ] again omit spaces

with the brackets in that instance versus the carets, right, zany?
i think that distinction hangs people up.

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9b)

Yes well, let me just jump in here in the middle of the conversation that is so off topic :~} You all did a great job telling 3g how to turn ON italic bold and underline......but how to turn them off when done? hah hah yoursevles. :~}}

On = < i>
Off = < /i>

Substutue the i for a b if you want bold and a u if you want underline. Remember to remove the space after each < as this is the only way we can demo without turning the feature on and making the code transparent.

Have fun now.

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

Yes, the brackets are used for the quotes instead of the carets.

Rose Lodge, OR(Zone 8b)

good catch, Mary! I forgot to put the space in the closing commands so that they would be visible to the naked eye.

There is a list of Frequently Asked Questions (aka FAQ) found here http://davesgarden.com/faq/forums/. This is a great link to bookmark for future use. It can also be found at the top of any page by clicking on the F.A.Q. button.

One command I like is striking words (as my thoughts change) by using the < strike> and < /strike> (omitting the spaces, of course.

Janet

ooooooo - I like the strike command. - I thought that then but now - 2 minutes later - I think this.

Thanks Janet.

Depsi, Please say hi anytime!

Dahlonega, GA

i sure agree to the fun,and clicked in unique's hyper then put it on favorites, that way, because i'm computer stupid, maybe i can learn something. i thank you too!

Katy, TX(Zone 8b)

I don't think I've ever turned on DG without learning something - sometimes I didn't need or want to know it but there it was. Always interesting and if something starts getting tedious there are a lot more links here to lurk onto (does that make sense?). Never a dull moment.
Thanks, all!!

Anne I too am amazed at what I learn here. My biggest learning curve has been plants that I have never heard of that can be perfect for my area but never offered at nurseries. Through wonderful trades and generous gifts from fellow dgers I have a real variety of wonderfully different plants. I realize that these can not be mass produced so not feasible for the nurseries to carry them. I love my friends here and Dave and the staffers who make this forum a place to gather. I hope if any of you pass me on a thread Please tug my chain and say hello. I love to gather more buddies online to converse, trade or support. Cindy

Oh Riverland.. The trades.. I have received so many plants that I would never in my wildest dreams purchased.. sometimes even when I got them, my heart would sink a little and think.. didn't they read my wish list.. ok, no I'm not ungrateful.. but come-on.. lets be honest.. I am sure we have all had a heart-sinking trade...
But then when I look up the plant and HAVE to learn about it because I now own it.. and I would never kill it just because I didn't choose it.. well I can say.. 9 times out of 10, those have ended up being my favorite and most suprising plants of the year. I love to trade on Daves.. can't wait till it's time!

One of the other things is that sometimes when you scan a plant list, you focus on the ones you know. Or I do, laziness I guess. But when someone sends you a trade or you see a picture of a new plant, then you HAVE to have it. I tell you dg has cost me some money and given me so much joy. What a great place and you cannot beat the price....less than a monthly magazine...a bargain.

I will remember the rest of my life when I posted on of my first posts and asked if anyone had any spare morning glory seeds....you all know what happened but I sure was not expecting it!

Rankin, IL(Zone 5a)

Ok... and plant-wise.. what was your most disappointing moment (I know we are hyjacking this thread.. but lets smile for a minute)

Mine was when I asked if anyone knew where I could purchase ANY of the Mystic Dahlia Series.. there are 5 and I cannot get my hands on one... (hint-hint)

Dandridge, TN(Zone 6a)

You should start a new thread, frans530. I know we all have a story (or 2 or 3 or 4) to tell!

Gold Beach, OR(Zone 9a)

This is kind of interesting. I wanted the crindodendron pataguy very badly, its a tree that grows in Chile. I finally got it in a trade from Cristina in Chile, here on Daves. I got small pack with 8 seeds carefully wrapped inside. I showed my uncle and he said why didn't you get it from me? I go to his house and here is this tree, about 30 years old, and get this, MILLIONS of seeds scattered all over the ground. It was only disappointing to know that I was oblivious to what was around me, I look more carefully now!!

Fran I checked my dahlias, don't have that one. Sorry.

Rankin, IL(Zone 5a)

ok.. new thread ^_^

With that said, lets all remember to play nice with each other, others are watching and taking the cues from you.

Hello all...tugging on your chain Cindy.."Hi!".
You know the old adage, "Ask and you shall receive", holds true on DG here. I'm more a giver, and hate to ask, would rather go online and purchase, if the local nursery do not offer what I want.
Well, some DGers and especially one Brugmansia addict had given without asking and those gestures really tugged my heartstrings. By the way, I'm also a member of other gardening forums, but only on DG can this happen to you, and imagine if we're neighbours?
I've learnt since then, to ask, if offered, and boy, just like Anne, the experience overwhelms you!
The Midsouth Forum will be holding their annual RU soon. Unfortunately I wasn't able to go, but God bless them, some kind souls ensured I won't be left behind by sending me "hugs and love" plants thru' the mail.
