First Lilies of the Season

Greenwood, IN(Zone 5b)

Thanks aggie, I can't remember what variety that is. I planted them in 2006 and they're pink; that's about all I know. I am so bad about labeling. Very similar actually to the "Algarve" in the other pictures.

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Great pictures, Aggiegirl!!! ;)

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Great lilies, aggie. They all just glow.

Lufkin, TX(Zone 8b)

thanks guys! i would love to have some that have that high of a bud count. are lilies like daylilies in that their bud count goes up as they get larger? i have some that only have one, two or three buds on the entire plant! pretty disappointing. the blackbird shown above only has 3, i think. also, some of my plants are browing at the top, i dont know if that is the buds shriveling or the leaves dying back for some reason. the rest of the plant looks very healthy. i also found some nice holes in some of the buds that were just about to open. i dont know if it was catapillars or grasshoppers that did the deed. i have a few that look like they are going to open tomorrow! i cant wait.

Here in my zone, Lollypop lilies are the first to show up each year. Next I think my yellow asiastic lilies. I'm so excited to see others zones South of us showing various blooms -- that means mine are coming up soon.

pretty! i just lost the last of my Lollipops today. no more till next year. i cant wait to see how well they multiply for me.

They multiply like bunny! I planted a few several years ago. Last year I decided I'd moved them to my new bed. Now I've them both on the old bed, as well as new, and they are 3-4x the number I originally planted. All blooming too at that.

Greenwood, IN(Zone 5b)

aggie, you'll find that your bud counts will increase as the bulbs get established and get larger. Also, some varieties naturally have higher bud counts than others. I never had high bud counts on Lollipops though I do like them. I have other Asiatics that produce 20+ buds per stem. Hang in there; you'll see!!

^_^

Look at this bright orange lilium - I just planted last fall. Don't know the variety because according to my spreadsheet, I didn't plant any orange lilies!!! Still, I love it.

thanks steve! i am not a big orange fan, but that is very pretty! the rains we have been having messed up some of my lilies. :( totally knocked the petals off several of them.

Steve, that orange is absolutely yummy!

Greenwood, IN(Zone 5b)

Thanks aggie & ililyfan - I was surprised how much I like the yellow, orange and red ones mixed together randomly.

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Oh yeah, that's nice. Looks like orange sherbet. Yum. :)

Lufkin, TX(Zone 8b)

Very nice, aggie - I especially like the Navona. A nice and clear but substantial white.

Lufkin, TX(Zone 8b)

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Just beautiful!!! I can't believe you guys have lilies opening already. We barely have peony thinking about budding up. wow. :)

Greenwood, IN(Zone 5b)

Hi Diann - aggie has a lot more open than I do! Though I do have a few. I want my big pink Asiatics to pop!

^_^

Lufkin, TX(Zone 8b)

well, you guys get a lot colder up there in DFW than we do! i hear you guys got quite a bit of SNOW this winter!! actually, it seemed unsually cold here is winter, too. seemed like more freezes, too.

Great lilies aggie, hope my Navone makes it this year.

I was out yesterday and I can see a few buds on some of the earliest lilies. About 3 weeks and I should have some first blooms

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

The beauty of a world with so many zones is staggered lily blossoms. It really gears me up for bloom time and adds to the excitement.

Keep sharing. It's also fun to see what others have in their gardens.

Lufkin, TX(Zone 8b)

same Navona as above, with two open. really is pretty.

Hmmm, I feel a lily addiction coming on! I just planted several day lilies last fall, got 2 more at the Iowa round-up, and planted two Oriental lilies this spring (Starfighter and Muscadet). Just looking at all of your lovely lilies makes me want MORE! LOL

I'm wondering if the lily that the florist called Stargazer for my wedding bouquet was actually something else. Seems like it had wider white edges than most of the pictures of Stargazer that I've seen--they are mostly red. The picture on the Starfighter package actually looked more like the ones in my bouquet, which is what prompted me to buy them. Our 14th anniversary is coming up this September!

Steve, I met you at the Iowa RU. Good to know this is where you hang out. Your lilies are stunning!

Greenwood, IN(Zone 5b)

Thank you, Bookerc - this is a place where we all find new addictions. I have been introduced to the world of hosta since my trip to the roundup. You will love lilies!!! Welcome to the addiction and also good to meet you at the Roundup!

Hang in there -- I keep telling myself while awaiting for these lilies to unfurl. Hi everyone.

Lily, very nice. It looks like Stones to me. :)

(Judith) Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

Stones or Monte Negro, but a far cry from Stargazer! They're very pretty though.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Ticker, revclaus; I looked up 'Stones' and they appear quite short, like a dwarf cultivar? And there isn't 'Mente Negro' on the file.

(Judith) Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

Both Stones and Monte Negro are Asiatics. Is yours an Oriental?

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

revclaus, I can't even differentiate b/w Oriental and Asiatics. What are the major differences in the two?

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Hmmm, my Asiatic Stones is not short...

(Judith) Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

Asiatics bloom earlier, Orientals later. In my zone Asiatics bloom in June, Orientals in July and August. Orientals usually have a fragrance, while Asiatics don't. If an Asiatic has a fragrance, it's unusual. Petals on Asiatics are smooth and Orientals have kind of "wavy" petals that recurve. Orientals get really tall, but Asiatics are shorter. That's all I can think of right now.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Great lilies lesson 101. I'll remember that. Based on that, the above lilies must be asiatic. No fragrant and petals are not that recurve. Thank you, revclaus.
My Oriental such as Casa Blanca is the last to bloom in my garden here too.

Actually, most divisions of lilies come in all shapes and sizes. http://lilies.org/types.html
