Hi! This looks like a fun ad informative board. I have many questions...I had my backyrd all planned out to start work o the hardscape, and I lost 2 huge trees that the shade garden was to go.Oh well, it's a woman's perrogative to change her mind - and Mother Nature is fickle!
Trees didn't really go dormant this winter here. I am sending a pic of the pansies that survived and thrived all winter with no special protection.
I will send pix and get some ideas!
perennial pansies in Ohio

WeeNel.
Pansies are planted here for the winter as they won't grow in our summers but have no problem with hard freezes. I had no idea they were winter-hardy in OH, though.
I lost two trees this winter that should have been totally hardy -- no idea at all why they are dead, but they are.

I wonder if the trees were weakened by the severe drought we had last summer...
I don't think so. I watered them regularly last summer. One of them should have been hardy to zone 5. It is coming back from the roots, but the trunk should not have died.

Oh that's terrible. What kind of trees were they?
The zone 5 tree is an English Walnut. No way it should have died to the roots, but it did.
The other one which should have been hardy is an esperanza, which was nearly 20 feet tall. http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/71778/ It was right by the corner of the house and the front deck, facing south. It would have gotten extra protection from the location. I thought I had the ID wrong, but everyone here says that it was an esperanza and should not have died.
So, it's a mystery to me.
