Cottage Garden Seed Swap & Chat #11

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I think the color of the dark leafed pepper varieties improves once they're outside in "real" sunshine.

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Lucy, what kind of Gaillardia did you plant? I looked at my plants outside and I think that's what it is :) Wish I had a camera!

South/Central, FL(Zone 9a)

Lea, that's the problem, I don't remember planting Gaillardia or Garzanias. I might have tho, but I looked through my seed packs, and I don't see any. Maybe I'm just losing it. lol : )

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Could it be a daisy of some sort? Are the leaves smooth or rough? It really looks like a Gaillardia though, here I am trying to grow all kinds of them and you get one just by accident lol

South/Central, FL(Zone 9a)

Lea, the leaves are kinda rough. I don't mind if it's one of those plants we have mentioned, they do well here.

I was going to send your plants this past Monday or Tuesday, but I just couldn't get myself going on that. I promise to get them in the mail next Monday tho. The scullcap is blooming and the MFV is fixing to, it has a bud.

The 2 scullcaps you gave me last year made it through the winter and one is blooming lavender flowers. The other one I almost lost, but it is coming back and will probably bloom soon.

Morning all.. Figured I would pop in uick and say Hi! and see what ahppening with everybody. Sorms are about an hour away.

About 8 last night a coupel of friends came and we got the peppers in th eground and mounds and mounds of squashes. Three different kinds and mounds of cukes. Just hope the storms slow out light enough that the rains don't wash the mounds away or all them squahes gonna be in the next doors driveway.

Suzy. Normall I do keep everythign in pots. Pots, everywhere ya turn except for a coupel small Daylily beds, but the majority of them are in pots. Actually it doesn't take long to water. I water aroudn the bases of the plants so the plants get a good drink and most th epots one gallons so they hold th emoisture pretty good. Usually doesn't take me more than about a half hour to water. minutes at the longest.

While water one section give sme time to check foliage and make sure no critters are having a free picinic on me.

Got my first Daylily bloom and it gonan be mush in a couple of hours. : (

Forget who all had the Fan Flower, but was wondering can you pinch the long stems back? Will the make more branches and flowers?

I hope everybody has a good day. Be back when the storms all end.

(bestest fairy)Tempe, MI(Zone 5b)

be safe Ella!!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Wind, if you let that top pair of leaves get just a little bigger, by then you'll probably see those "leaflets" I was talking about forming where the lower pair of leaves meets the stem... those leaflets will let you pinch with confidence, and the larger leaves from the top you pinched will give you a tasty nibble!

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Lucy, don't worry about getting that out take your time I'm in no hurry believe me lol I have plenty to do, today I'm trying to figure a spot out for my petunias, I'm putting them in a three pot thing with a rod in the middle so it has to have lots of sun and I have to put it where I'm not going to move it and that's hard lol My sun is awful here for full sun plants, I only have one good spot and I have to worry about shading the other plants :) There is always something to do lol

Star I hope your first bloom doesn't turn to mush, I have those stella de'ors? by my sidewalk getting ready to bloom but no blooms on my regular daylilies yet and I'm saying good by to the candytuft that is planted in between, I hate to see those blooms go I wish they would stay around longer.

Next year I need more spring blooming plants/seeds lol All I have now is basket of gold, snow in summer and my candytuft, what else can I plant in flowers to bloom in the spring besides bulbs, and oh yes columbine lol They are all spread around in different beds so it doesn't look like I have anything blooming in the spring much. Plants for part sun would be good.

's-Gravenhage, Netherlands(Zone 8b)

LeBug,

You may want some bi-annuals then, like digitalis, hesperis, dianthus barbatus, erysimum cheirii, lunaria annua. May/June is the perfect time to sow them and they will bloom for you next spring!

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Oh Tuink, I just don't want to plant bi-annuals every year lol I already do the canterburry bells every year and sometimes they make it and like this year I only had one make it and had a bunch planted, that was because of the wet winter but I love the bells! I am planting digitalis this year but they are going to be in back where my shade garden is, I've had them there before and they really did good but they are tall and out front the wind is so bad, I'd be afraid it would blow them over even if I stake them. lunaria, I have some of this growing from seed this year as we speak but I've got to plant it in the shade, my neighbors did well in the shade and I had some planted in two spots last year and lost it all and that was in part shade. Now dianthus sounds good I still have seed to start those, I don't think I'll ever get thru all of these seeds lol I'll start those dianthus seeds tomorrow don't think I'll have time today but I can start looking for them today :)

What is the deal with sweet william? I planted sooty and it's blooming but it's falling over? It's in part sun but it really gets a lot of sun should I trim it before it blooms or as it's coming up? The deer trimmed it a bit for me earlier this year lol

(Maggie) Jacksonvill, FL(Zone 9a)

Who was it who wanted a winter jasmine plant? I've rooted one for you.

Maggie

(bestest fairy)Tempe, MI(Zone 5b)

where is terese when you need her great finding skills??

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

LeBug, How about Aubrieta? groundcover, fairly slow spreader, blooms early and long, either purple or white flowers. There's a vareigated one, too. Mine blooms before my daffodils and continues for about a month. The rest of the year it's kinda dull, but it sure is great to see them bloom so early!

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

I think terese went to see her family didn't she, wasn't that her that was going on a trip?

susybell, how much does that spread, I don't really have room for a groundcover right now :) I'll check it out in the plantfiles. How long have you had yours and has it spread a lot since you put it in the ground you know some groundcovers it takes forever for them to spread :) Maybe next year if I have my tree down by then, which I doubt lol

hi there

finally warm here or rather too hot too fast..supposed to be in the 90s tomorrow..gosh
but it will be normal weather next week tho.
working on tilling the garden under so i can plant by end of the month and june and cleaning out my pond..hopefully tomorrow. theres too much debris in there

diana im glad the poppies grew for you. i hope they turn out pretty..

the hardy hibiscus are showing some green leaf and small nubs...i hope they all come back.

pam

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

Hi Lea, I started off with a couple of 4" pots of the Aubrieta in about 1999. They went in as a ground cover under my roses in a bed that's about 5ft x 3ft (roughly). It's never completely covered the entire bed-I do thin it down on occasion, but it probably took three years to fill up half of it, give or take. It's probably about 3-5" tall when it's not blooming, and about10" when it is.

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Pamsue, long time no hear :) All of my hibiscus are coming back so far except for two of my white texas stars, one has come back not sure why the other two haven’t started yet, those are out back in my herb garden. All of the ones out front are up about a foot now, I just wonder if that means it might be another zone which would be good except for all of the cottin pickin water out there standing around from the rain! There is a ditch of water right behind them not even two inches away so I was really sweating them lol

Susybell, I’m afraid that would spread a little too much, the beds I have out front usually get packed by summer, wouldn’t be any room for that one I’m afraid, I had some verbena in one of my front beds last year and had to keep trimming it so no verbena out front anymore either and I just bought two gorgeous ones, now where to plant them lol Just had to have them though lol Maybe a pot lol Oh that is rock cress, I tried to grow that from seed a few years ago and haven’t tried since it’s pretty, I have maiden pinks in there and they doubled in size for this year I may have to move some of them for next year. I don’t like moving pants once I get them in the ground, too many others to get ‘in’ the ground lol But thanks for the suggestion :)

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

This is my first time using Foxfire and it's supposed to have a spell checker...OMG! It does! My posts will be error free now. How cool is that?
I am dog tired, rain, rain and more rain, oh, and clouds. So sad - the little seedlings are very small!

Suzy

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

I put a few seedlings out from downstairs, just brought them up last night and they were in the greenhouse all day too, I took the chance to put them out in the rain, I may be sorry lol I just couldn't resist lol I have more I'm going to put out that I just put out there today in the morning we are suppose to have showers, today it was a healthy rain I think we got an inch, didn't need it! lol But it still makes the plants grow some new peppers didn't like the winds either they were bending like crazy. Most of the others were gaillardia, they should be fine I hope, Suzy, you probably have yours in the ground? Mine are too small for the ground yet, I'm chicken lol I'm like critter, I like some size to my plants before I take the plunge lol But yours are mostly annuals though thought it sounds like you are collecting a few perennials this year too :)) I dug my snaps up, they were sitting in the water today after the rain just started and knew they were in for a bad night, I'm going to plant them somewhere else, told you I was chicken lol Didn't even have to dig the water had already losened them so they would have probably floated out like some of my bulbs did this winter.

Well when my spelling is bad it's because I didn't go to word and check my spelling which I seldom do anymore, too much trouble lol We get our point across lol

's-Gravenhage, Netherlands(Zone 8b)

Morning all!

Sing Hallelujah! It's raining, finally. I've been waiting for that for almost a month!

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

Lea, no problem, I do understand, I don't like moving plants or tearing them out when they get too big, either.

Suzy, error-free, that's a high standard! But the spell-check is pretty cool, though-I do love my Firefox...

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Firefox, Foxfire...okay, so maybe not error free! ROTF!

Tuink, I would gladly send you the clouds!!! We will not see the sun until next Saturday, a week from tomorrow, if the 10-day forecast is right. This will be about our 7th week of mostly cloudy weather. Sheesh, maybe more than 7 weeks, as even March was cloudy and rainy.

I've been having more Columbine bloom from last year's WS efforts. What a waste of space! Today's blooms were a jumbled mix of streaky purple and dirty white. I clipped the flowers for the vase and ripped the plants all out. I pulled Wm Guiness a few days ago, leaving one because it matched Heuchera Obsidian which is was planted near. Call me sentimental. :)

The Peony buds are getting fat, but no bloom yet. There is an article about Montauk Daisy in the DG Daily articles. It looks like just a regular old daisy, but it blooms late. LOL! I didn't know that and I sowed some seeds and planted them, but up came an old daisy -- like a roadside daisy (I posted in the ID forum - there was a tag there, but I didn't see it until I had pulled them out.). Um, I pulled them out before they got too weedy. At this rate, I wont have any flowers at all.

Suzy

's-Gravenhage, Netherlands(Zone 8b)

Really, Suzy, you must stop pulling all these plants now! Unless you want to start a kitty-litter garden.....

The rain will be today and tomorrow, then more drought again! So send over them clouds, please!

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

Suzy, you're funny :)
Same here for us with the peonies, no blooms yet. Also, I saw those montauk daisies for the first time last year all over the properties at the beach here at Long Beach Island NJ. My cousin has them ~ they must be pretty drought tolerant and hardy because the soil there is obviously very sandy.

Well I made it through yesterday with only a few plant losses. We had a termite extermination done and they had to dig a trench around the entire house and stomp their big 'ol feet all over the place. I must say they did an ok job, I expected to have to dig up and move lots of plantings and I didn't have to. My biggest worry was some nicotiana sylvestris and salvias that came back (Salvia Guarantica and Costa Rican Salvia) all some of my favorites, but they survived.

I was sorting through more seeds yesterday and am going to plant a bunch more today believe it or not.

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Tuink, you can have my clouds and rain too! So sorry you aren't getting any, we are getting it all now and won't get any this summer I'm sure, we got two inches of rain in about two days, well a little over two inches. It's good for hardening plants off is all and kind of cool to leave new seedlings out at night it was 41 when I got up this morning and I think it's suppose to be a little cooler tonite! Then by Friday, next week, up to 86? Crazy! lol I'm beginning to wonder if I'm going to get any of my 'special' annuals in the ground like my lantana and daturas!

(bestest fairy)Tempe, MI(Zone 5b)

I am planting all my seedlings next weekend come hell or high water!!LOL I have to get my kitchen and dining room back B4 DH goes bonkers!!LOL Have to get 3 beds dug out for enough room though....some might just have to live on the porch for a bit...

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

Fairy, I feel the same way only I hope I get planting this Sunday! The house has been empty now with all the seedlings outside. I was tempted to bring back in some today because it was so gloomy and chilly but I left them all out!

and so much for wanting to plant more seeds today....never got to it! But I did get to a few garden centers and picked up some annuals for our hanging baskets etc. Went shopping in the pouring rain with a gardening friend. The crazy fools us gardeners can be! Got some fan flower in both purple and white, a fig tree (I have wanted for years), some white cascade petunias and a bunch more.

I'm excited tomorrow to be going to Longwood gardens in PA and meeting up with some DGers from the MidAtlantic region :)

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Have fun, Diana! Pretty Peony bud -- it's a great pic, but where are the ants?

I am swamped with setting seedlings out. I have sooo many and am having a hrad time seeing where I have space for all the self-sown seedlings coming up. Weeds or flowers? I have to ask that every time I see more of them and I am afraid I do not know the answer on 3/4s of them
