Exhibit A IS the cleome is it not? And if so, any guesses on exhibit B?
And whilst I've got you here and I'm weeding out volunteers, is this a bachelor button?
(see exhibit C)
Cottage Garden Seed Swap & Chat #11
Exhibit C is growing right along side exhibit D. Last year I had BBs and poppies in this area. Might this be a poppy or is it a weed that needs yanking?
(see exhibit D)
(I think exhibit D is sideways but my Picasa is not cooperating tonight for some reason.)
I do have more exhibits but I intend to take them to the ID forum. LOL
B is the cleome, definitely. C is not perennial BB, but I'm not familiar with the annual BB. It looks kind of like oriental poppy. D looks like a weed, but who knows. Wait til other smart folks chime in.

Flowerhead.. Cool. thanks for that bit on information. Didn't know you could do that with em. : )
LaLa.. Your little monkey flower is as cute as can be. : ) Hoep ya get a bunch more of them.
C looks like a weed to me too like the one I have oodles of growing in my pots that make like a yellow small flower than is on the order of a dandelion.
But better wait for some third and fourth opinions.
Thanks troops! If B is the cleome I wonder if A is Knockout Salvia which is also a good reseeder and resides in the same neighborhood. Critter....oh Critter!
I think D is a weed too, but I'm not too sure about C. I'm sorta certain that it's annual BB, but last year was my first (and apparently my last) year for it so I need a little help to be sure.
TY for the congrats on the bloom Star. :-D
"Exhibit A" does have a familiar look... but my 'Purple Knockout' salvia generally has purple leaves from the first true leaves. I'm not at all good with seedling ID... but it does look like it could be a salvia... do you have any clary sage around there?
Exhibit D looks like an annual BB, Exhibit C looks like something I have here that I'm leaving. A chance it is Knautia? That's what I am thinking here and if not, well, pull it up later.
B is your Cleome (I know you already got the answer, but I was so excited I knew one I just wanted to say it!:) and A is a Rudbeckia hirta maybe? I think that's what the wee seedling leaves look like before the true leaves elongate a bit. Or perennial BB, Centaurea Mountain Bluet. It looks too thick & furry to be Salvia, but I don't know what Clary Sage is, so Critter might be right..
Ask GardenGus to get on here! She came over here and was really good at the weeds....I had a lot growing considering how clean the garden was last year (it was pretty clean of weeds)
Suzy
Morning all!
Illoquin, you'd be surprised how much will grow in this sand! As long as you keep watering. No chance of getting waterlogged over here!
LaLa,
What a lovely monkey flower! If you manage to get some seeds from them later on, I'm definitely interested!
As far as your exhibits are concerned:
A. is certainly not a cleome, I also think it may be a salvia. Offspring of purple specimens is often just plain green!
B. might be well be cleome, but we'll have to wait for the next set of leaves to be sure.
C. is a poppy. I recognise them as they grow at my doorstep (literarily).
D. I don't think this is a bacholor button. It bears a suspicious resemblance to the weeds I have to keep pulling from my edible gardens.....
Well this was fun....thank you all for playing along! It looks like the general consensus is that B is our originally sought after cleome. Exhibit A is still an uncertaintly, but since I've got 1/2 of a plug flat all potted up I'll hang on to them ~ if for no other reason than just to solve the mystery. I'm pretty sure that C isn't a weed just because there are so many of them and they're too "new" to that spot. I kept that bed pretty well weeded last year so I think it's something that was purposely planted there then reseeded.
This is the precise reason I took pictures of all my seedlings as they germinated this year. I will eventually submit them all to Plantfiles as it is my intention to wipe out Seedling ID Confusion Syndrome yet in my lifetime. (We will be holding a fund-raiser later in the year. I'll be sure to let you all know the date.) (Buahahaha. Sometimes I crack myself up. Unfortunately it's usuall only ME that I crack up, but hey ya gotta get your entertainment where ya can.)
Tuink if I get any seeds from the monkey flower they have your name on them. ;-)
Thanks! Oh my, I've just fallen in love with a Monkey flower......
Wind-I will have to take pics of the eucomis seedlings-too cute!! If you want-the sotre here has the reg. green one on clearance for $2...
what I did-2mm deep, about 3wks @ 70*
It took about 3-4 weeks for it to pop up-had it in my dining room in front of the sliding glass door w/ light coming in it-put them in a peat pod....that is all I did....don't know if this helps or not
Eastern Redbud-scarify lightly, soak 24hrs. 1/4" d, I actually soaked it for a couple days-3 I think and I knicked it just a tad w/ nail clippers-had 3 germinate out of the 4 I did..
I know purple leafed plants often revert to green in their offspring, but 'Purple Knockout' salvia has been throwing equally purple volunteer and winter sown seedlings for me for several years... it's one of the things I love about that variety! Clary sage does have especially large, thick leaves, which is why I suggested it as a possibility... but more to the point, I don't think anybody has recognized "A" yet as a common or troublesome weed. :-)
the monkey bloom is pretty....where in the world do they come up with these names!
not much happening here this am. we are finally clouded over and looks like rain is on the way, just a drizzle so far. I'm glad because we planted some collards, and mesclun greens seeds that could use a soaking. I received a perfect head of romaine from a friends garden, not a bug bite or hole in a single leaf (yes it was organically grown) she always wows us with perfect produce. I'm lucky if we get enough for us and she always has extra to give away. Her method is a technique called square foot gardening. It works well for her.
I have a final exam tomorrow so I'm going to have to get reading again and try not to think about all the seedlings that are desperate for a transplant!
oh...forgot to ask
Dryad if you are out there???? was the purple tansy you are growing from Carol's garden? I would love some seeds to try for next year if you can think of saving some for me in the next swap :)
La, D looks like bachelor's buttons I have here in the garden. And Wow! you've got a ton of poppies! Gotta post pics when those bloom!
Pretty monkey!
Lea, I am very doubtful those Rocky Mountain Penstemon are any kind of Penstemon. You and I have the same seedlings and they are in the iris family for sure -- Candy Lily, Blackberry liliy, something like that. After doing sa little research and looking at Penstemons in PFs, I didn't see any that had sword shaped seedlings leaves, plus these are monocots and Penstemons are dicots. I am 100% sure the person sending them in mislabeled the entire batch.
Bluestone perennials went 20% off as of today. In case anybody needs more plants, I mean. :))
Suzy
Of course they did! I just placed an order last week! 8>(
Aw, give them a call...? Ask them to slip on some extras or somehting.
Good idea. I actually think it was over the weekend I ordered too. I did get 10% off - better than nothing i guess.
Does anybody happen to recongize what this plant is. It arrived last year by bird, wind or suirrel in my yard and grew up in my Daylily bed. Had two plants and this year, they came right back again. It really beautiful with it's yellow daisy like flowers and it don't get much bigger nor is it invasive here, but haven't the foggiest as to what it is and would love to know.
AnybodY? Can ya satify my courisosity?????
Dutch gardens put up a sale too-has some dahlias and other things-some are 5070% off, some are more like 30%....
aaaahhhhhh I love Bluestone....don't have time to look.........
I don't know the id star, I don't recognize the serrated edge of the yellow petals
our poinsettias were full of white flies, had to set them outside today, a few of them are still in the house I'm sure!
LeBug, your blue smoke baptisia just poked up today :) I wonder if it will come true?
Aw, Fairy, that's so pretty! Looks like Sping has sprung in Michigan! Your little circles turned out well, didn't they?
Star, I'm mystified. That flower edge is like a coreopsis, but the foliage is wider than any coreopsis that I know. Maybe the Plant ID forum?
Suzy
Star, that reminds me some of one of my favorite winter sown perennials, Heliopsis helianthoides v. scabra http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/49/ ... except yours seems to be much shorter!
Morning all!
Star, no idea which plant that is!
And Fairy, your drive way is bigger than my entire garden! Pretty, though.....
May you day be as sunny as ours: 27 degrees Celsius, that's july temperatures!
Thanks guys-it was the perfect day for a picture-cloudy!! I will have take some pics of my seedlings-ever since I transplanted-some of them have REALLY taken off-AMAZING!! Some though didn't make it:(
Suzy, those penstemon ‘rocky mountain’ seeds were from Colchie on here I’ll dmail her and see what she says. I’ve never seen a penstemon seedling like that and I have four or five of them planted. It was quite a surprise :)
Wind, those purple smoke will come true, they will bloom for you next year :)
I found a couple more red lantanas at the nursery yesterday now I have three :) It’s getting harder and harder to find the kind that grow upright most of the ones they have around here are the trailing kind, why is that not everyone wants a hanging basket! I don’t have the right sun for hanging baskets so I can’t make them.
La, love your monkey flower! I have some that just germinated this week!
How the heck do you get lion's ear to germinate? I have tried it for three years! Anyone have any tips????
If you're talking about the annual kind, L. nepetifolia (?), I think I did mine inside under lights with a heat mat 2 years ago when I grew it.
Does anyone remember where all the info for starting the poppy seeds was? I think it is a tad late to start them but I didn't have a spot ready for them, and kept putting it off. Now I want those poppies so I was going to try half the packs to see what I can get.
All I remember was that suzy put them out right before a snow...
Critter.. You were pretty close.
I did like somebody suggested and put it on the plant id place. I forget that place is there. Patrick in NM was able to identify it. I can't even get my tongue to wrap aroudn it's name Tetragonotheca helianthoides L. Common name think is Squarehead.
here th elink he was kind enough to giv eme. http://alabamaplants.com/Yellowopp/Tetragonotheca_helianthoides_page.html
Ya know what really cool. The link he provided showed the pics taken on Ft. Benning, Ga. Well Guess what about 10 miles down the road. The back side of Ft. Benning, so now I know where it came from. What cool too is my location on the link map didn't show any growing, well it is now. : )
Gonan see if I cna figure out how to ave seed from it, if anybody wants some. It a really beautiful plant. I almost thought it was a big weed last year and almost pulled it out. So glad I didn't cuz the flowers was like warm sunshine and made me smile.
Thanks evreybody for the help! : )
star, glad you got the id on your plant :)
I love learning about new plants, thanks for posting the link
that is neat, about the photos being taken so close to you too!
Meredith, I didn't have any luck so far with my poppy seeds that I direct sowed. I'm thinking the birds ate the seeds, but I still have hope, we'll see.
Everything I have read says they like cool, sow in Feb. or like Suzy said, "in the snow" is a good time to toss the seeds where you want them. However, I have also read you can early spring.
I had great germination of all the poppies I started using the winter sow technique, but I have to say many did die off. I'm thinking maybe they got too moist in the plastic jugs even though there was adequate drainage.
Good luck with your poppies :)
Those "helianthoides" species are pretty cool! Mine was a surprise plant, also, since the seeds came to me labeled as "Chocolate Daisy." The first seeds I shared went out with labels like "Too Tall to Be Chocolate Daisy" or "Not-Chocolate-Daisy" since I didn't have a solid ID on it, LOL.
Mer-It is not too late up here to start the seeds-but after you start them be very careful not to weed through the area-until they get their true leaves they are teeny weeny and look nothing like the lettucey poppy leaves. I would send a pic, but they are too small to get good ones. Also-I hate to say the pineapple sage is a no go. I only have one plant that survived the winter and it's not big enough to take cuttings from. If you don't get any, I'm sure this baby will grow like crazy as sson as it gets outside. So let me know if you don't find any.
Diana, I have only done it one way successfully. And I usually try to sow before it snows, not on top of the snow. (Not sure it makes any difference, it's just how I do it) I had the same thing happen to the WS seedling sin the jugs. First the little ones died off, then the big ones. I just watched them sort of melt away from too much moisture, and like you, I had plenty of drainage, and lots of holes even up the sides of the jugs.
Suzy.
I have a crap load of poppies...figured I would hold off til next year to sow them so that I can do the suzy method as the ones I WS's didn't germinate at all:(
