Cottage Garden Seed Swap & Chat #11

's-Gravenhage, Netherlands(Zone 8b)

I have Tithonia too. They grow fast when just germinated, about the length of my hand but are strong and sturdy. After a month they stopped growing though. I've just planted them out and hope they will become the big plants the package promised......

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

WORD, WORD, WORD Lucy LOL It's close enough, I had to take the tomatoes in for a couple of nights but I'm thinking we are on our way to spring, I want to start weeding my big beds with the dreaded weed killer if I could just get rid of this cat on a nice calm day but where the skullcap is going it is ready :) I forgot about the vine too thanks Lucy, you are such a sweetie!!! I did plant mine but nothing yet but it hasn't been a month yet, those seeds look awful iffy to me lol I just hope it blooms for me :)

Tuink, really hate to hear about your water situation, we will have another dry summer so I know what you will be going thru, not the carrying of water though I have 5 gal. buckets that I fill each night to water pots with the next day and a hose, I did buy some extra soaker hoses this year (just about four) and need a few more, it about killed me watering all summer last year trying to make it a little easier for this year. Good to hear from you it’s been a while :)

Wind my little canna seed is already in the ground I grew it for a neighbor, she has it up against the house though, it was only about an inch tall when I gave it to her last week and now it has one whole leaf! Your babies look great!

I need to spray for weeds today and try and get some seeds in the ground tomorrow before it rains, the neighbor I hope is home today so I can spray without a cat around lol If it’s not to windy I sure missed a good day to spray the other day! I think the wind is going to be up a little today but I gotta get it done!

Star, can you plant them a little deeper and pinch the tops maybe if the Tithonia have stretched too much?

Oh Kath, that Majic Carpet is beautiful, I’m not sure if the dark one made it if it has it’s not dark yet :) I can’t believe I didn’t put the names on these little shrubs when I got them! Would it be dark now? If not I think I know which one it is lol

Suzy, they are starting to cut on those trees above the field today wonder how long it will take them, there are only two guys up there lol

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

Tuink, I can't imagine not having electricity...do you have it for your house?

Star, your finals are a few weeks earlier than Rutgers in NJ, ours start this Friday.....which reminds me....I should be studying, aaahhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!

good luck with your tithonia and glad you mentioned it ~ I have to plant some :)

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Oh, Lea, I am so sorry about the trees!

Star, My Tithonia are 1-1/2 inches from the soil , too. Isn't that weird? I had to put them up singly because it's still a bit too cold for those heat lovers. Once you pinch them, they fill out and get more stout, so I wouldn't worry about starting more.

I am pretty sure Tuink has electricity in her house ROTFL! I think she does some gardening in a kind of allotment and there is no electricity there.

Wind, Can you hit up the garden centers a litle later in the spring and get more of the open flats? I have lost so many plants like that (except I lost them by not moving them to the porch). Sooo many dahlias and Caladiums! I used to use a box lid, and line it with a garbage bag and lay the tubers out that way with soilless mix. No drainage, though, which keeps the box top from disintegrating, but rots out the bulbs & tubers. FAST!

Suzy

Indiana U. had finals over LAST week. DD#2 is home and interviews for a job this afternoon. She is excited because it pays $12.00 an hours, but is only three days a week.

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

Thanks all. Gonan go out later and get a pic and measure and maybe somebody can tell me whether they gonna be worth saving. Hope so.

Just got back from hoem depot and got me some generic osmocote. and gona see if I can't get some of thes eplants to jump start. That last cold spell really set everythign back. I should be in full bloom by now and stil have stuff in the tiny seedling stage.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Oh, about those flats for outside... I have a bunch of older black plastic flats that got little holes in the corners after a few seasons of use. They are perfect for seedlings outside! I can fill the flat with the hose for bottom watering, and any excess that doesn't get soaked up dribbles slowly out the little holes... excess rainwater drains away, too. For indoor use, I treated myself to those green plastic "Perma Nest" trays, and I just love them -- so sturdy! :-)

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

I'm going to get some of those perma nest trays next year when they go on sale just for in the basement, I'm always mixing my trays up and never know for sure which ones have holes in them, Critter have you ever tried stopping a hole up with the glue gun? I've though about it but never tried.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I've never tried using a glue gun on them (would probably melt as much hole as I'd stop up?), but I've used epoxy to repair small holes. You won't regret buying the PermaNest trays... I got mine on sale from Parks (they do quantity discounts, also).

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

yes, that's what I figured, my glue gun isn't the hot but I've always thought about giving it a shot just never got around to it lol I won't be buying a lot of trays, just 3 or four for watering downstairs :) I like for everything to look good down there too cause outside it's complete chaos! lol

South/Central, FL(Zone 9a)

Lea, I'll try to get those plants out. I'll let you know when I do. I might wait till Monday, so they don't sit in the P.O. over the weekend.
~Lucy

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Any time is fine Lucy, I think I've got a few things to keep me busy lol Take your time :)

I can't say who but I got some grasses from a very nice DG'er and I am in grass heaven right now lol I've got shrubs from Kath to plant along with them it's going to look sooo cool! Plants are coming together this year if I can only get them in the ground lol I cleaned my herb garden out today and fed the pretties in there that needed it, I've got a couple of penstemon, lobelia and some hibiscus in there too. First bed is done but it was pretty done when I started I wish the other ones were going to be like that lol I'm not talking about the extention for the herb bed though it needs a lot of work!

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

It was hot and sunny here today, very dry, but the cold and rain are on their way back. I have a whole lot of things that are either self-sown seedlings or weeds and I can't tell the difference! Especially those stupid poppies that look like weeds. I've been pulling something left and right, and I'm pretty sure I'm pulling my poppies.

The perennials are taking over again. I don't know how this happens! I get rid of nearly everything, and add back only a select few, and those get big in a single year! I guess my "select few" might actually be "more than a select few".

Seandor, been thinking about you-- pulling Cleome like crazy; Fairy been thinking about you on the self sown redbuds weeds; and Gram, I have some baby catMINT seedings that made me think about you, too! I wish I could mail them all out to you but I know they'd never make it alive.

Starlight, I have a whole bunch of Pennisetum glaucum from your seed, and I think the name was Purple Emperor ...do they turn purple? Like Purple Majesty Milet? I can't find any reference to them online.

The Wsd seeds in my contraption was basically a bust. Maybe 50% germination? I wasn't able to keep them wet, or else the soilless mix I used was too wet. How's that for a definitive answer? LOL! My yellow spurred Columbine (all 3 different sowings) is a no show so far, and if I didn't hate to type so much, I would make a list of what hasn't germinated yet. Those perennials are so small, I don't have the patience to grow them from seed, but so far the milk jugs are far superior to anything else I can find -- just wish they weren't so trashy looking! And hard to store. And time consuming, too.

Morning all!

Glad to be able to tell you that we DO have electricity! As Illoquin has told you (what a memory she has!) my edible gardens are at an allotment complex and no electricity and running water there!

Suzy, I had the same yellow spurred columbine and which has sprouted and is now growing in a special nursery bed. I'll plant it out next year!

Critter, that was a good idea about those trays! I have several ones that leak and was thinking of throwing them away but will now keep them after all!

BTW, we had an intruder yesterday!

The cat couldn't be bothered though!

This is my cutting-garden-to-be. It looks empty but I did a lot of direct sowing there and babies are coming up by the zillions. No saying, however, which are the weeds and which are the ornamental plants......

Suzy-I have 3 precious little redbud seedlings!! Theya re the cutest things!! These teeny little stems and beautiful big heart shaped leaves!! I love them;)

I only have 9 more to transplant, then am done until the stuff I sowed (rapid annuals & veggies) needs it-but am hoping those will be able to go straight in the ground:) I will have to take a pic after I am done so you can see my poor kitchen!!

Tuink-I LOVE frogs-they are one of my things-my 2nd bath and garden have them!! GLAD to see you back!!:)

Suzy-thanks for the compliment on the tulips-I am very proud of the way they look-just as I pictured in my mind-now I have to find something for DH to stop weedwacking them!! I just need something that sticks about 6" out of the ground...

ROBYNZEST-IF YOU ARE LURKING-HAPPY BDAY!!!

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

Tuink, glad you have electricity!!! I was thinking your garden was behind your house for some reason. I NEED an allotment garden for us for all these seedlings! Your kitty is so sweet...snoozing away!!!

I also like the PermaNest trays and was just going to order more, but I'll wait now and look for a sale. That is good to know, thanks Critter :)

nothing yet on my redbud seeds

I did get germination yesterday on the ws geranium orchid blue seeds from Weez :)

I transplanted some amsonia yesterday...I'm forgetting what everything looks like and where I should plant them. I printed out all the plantfile printouts of what I have, so I'll have to start relooking up what is here!

's-Gravenhage, Netherlands(Zone 8b)

I love frogs too, but not in my kitchen (or on my plate, if it comes to it!).

I only got one geranium Orchid blue to germinate. I stuffed it in the border somewhere and hope it will flower. I had it once before and loved it but the seeds were propelled away before I could get to them.....

(bestest fairy)Tempe, MI(Zone 5b)

Wind-did you soak your redbud seeds and nick them lightly 1st???

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Kath, I have another bowman's root coming up this morning since I covered the seed! :) That makes four, yeah!!!

Suzy, I just noticed some of those begonias that I grew are red and not pink, I have one six pack that is red, those seeds are from you tunik :) I’ve never had the red ones so you know which ones I’m growing.

It’s cloudy today, I’m hardening some more plants off from downstairs and starting to transplant again I have lots of little seedlings downstairs again, my Sileen is germinating ‘jack flash’, I’ll make a list a little later, Suzy I have 17 of the ‘yellow star’ I’ll send you a few in the fall if you want :) And more of the others are coming up, red star and the red and cream. I’m just about starting over with my columbine this year most of mine I have noticed have the short spurs. The fire cracker is going very fast but I think that’s what I gave you two of :)

Tunik, I’m hoping to have some frogs this year, it was so dry last year I saw one but usually they are in my pots and they weren’t there last year I missed them :) He’s so cute! I’m getting two kitties in the next couple of weeks, my first, I’ve always been a dog person but the neighbors have turned me into a kitty person too lol

's-Gravenhage, Netherlands(Zone 8b)

Lebug, why not get a (mini) pond. Frogs will love you for it and kitties will drink from it (they prefer it over tap water)!

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

Suzy.... Here ya go...

Tuink... LOL.. I have one of them garden visitors too. scarred the beegibees out of me when I was moving plants and it was hiding in one. Love em, but mine needs to uit digging restting holes in my pots.

Cute kitty too. : ) Love your little garden.

headign out put some maters in the groudn yesterday and that groudn so bone dry need to giv ethem another drink before we hit 85 today. Hope friday comes fast and we manage to get a little bit of rain.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

You'll probably have to wait until fall (Oct/Nov) for a good sale from Parks on those PermaNest trays... but their regular prices aren't bad, especially if you're planning on ordering multiples.

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

checked to see...PermaNest aren't on sale at the moment.

Fairy, I didn't...I'm just going to leave the container out with other seeds that haven't sprouted yet (eucomis, cherokee bean, red hot poker, purple smoke baptisia...), and hope for the best. If it does sprout I have to think, where in the world I'll plant it? I originally wanted the redbud for my sister's new house and they moved out already!

Tuink, I thought the orchid blue geranium was a perennial...it didn't come back for you?

the oakleaf and buttercrunch lettuce didn't sprout for me, but it could be that my DH planted the seeds too deep.

critter, how do you have your rumex planted? I'm worried about if it will be invasive or not...thinking of where to plant it ~ I've got some cute little seedlings from your seeds here :)

Nope, it didn't (unfortunately)!

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Diana, That is so pretty! All your shots are always pretty! What is that wire around the fence pole? I need that :))

Critter, weren't we talking about that Park's sale last fall? Complaining to each other, on a thread, how Park's had changed their sale? In 2006, EVERYTHING was 1/2 off, but in 2007, only seeds and "select" items were on sale.... and they were only 40% off. Neither heat mats nor perma nest trays were on sale. I know PamSue remembers because she and I talked about it, too.

Starlight, thanks. I had the name wrong.

Tuink, That sand is amazing....how does anything grow in it?

Gotta get cracking today...I sure hope we get rain, but I'm afraid to say it because I don't want 40 days and 40 nights of it, just and inch, please! LOL!

Have a god one!!!

Suzy

(bestest fairy)Tempe, MI(Zone 5b)

My eucomis seeds germinated-have to see what I did for them-I have 3 babies-so cute-kinda look like mini tulip leaves...

Apparantly the redbud seeds you have to nick w/ nail clippers and then soak-I did for 3 days and had germination a couple days later...I will let you know what I did and time table after I get home....

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Wind, if you really want that cherokee bean, I would take it out of the container and scratch it with a nail file and soak in H202, I threw some out last year because they didn't germinate and found them burried in the dirt out by the back porch, brought them in and soaked them for 24 hrs. and they sprouted or it, I just did one lol That's the coral bean right? They didn't germinate all winter and couldn't believe I found them and now one is growing Suzy is getting the other two beans lol It has pretty leaves but I didn't realize they had thorns, mine has thorns right now and it's only about 5" tall but they are soft for right now :) I don't know about the others but the baptisia will probaby germinate around the last of May or first of June.

Talking of tulip leaves Fairy I have a penstemon that has iris leaves, I thought that was pretty strange I think it may be the rocky mountain?

Tunik, I loved your mini pond! I couldn't have electricty out there and would hate to have one without a fountain in it or something to keep the air moving in it but I would like to have one! I have a picture of a frog in one of my pots a couple of years ago I'll see if I can find it lol They were so bad that year they kept pushing my plants out of the pots trying to dig in lol

I'm going downstairs to see what is up today :) I'll report later :)

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I didn't remember if the PermaNest trays were on sale or not last fall... thought they were at some point, but I don't think they made it to 40% off, just a little off... But they've started charging up to $2 for those black trays locally, and the black plastic ones seem to be getting more flimsy, so I think the heavy duty trays are worth the investment.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Yes, I should have said they weren't on super sale-sale as they were the year before. The year before you tried and tried to get me to buy some (well, it's not like you tried and tried, more like I saw it on several threads, and sometimes you were talking to me :))

Suzy

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

thanks Fairy, I'm esp. curious about the eucomis, I got some in a DG trade and really am looking forward to it.

Suzy, I get all my post trellis' on ebay, just search around, let me know if you can't find a source and I'll gladly look up who I got mine from. I love mine and have them on our drain spouts too for clematis and things.

I really want to mount a trellis on our house and garage. I have a great link somewhere around here that shows what some people have done. It is something I've wanted to do for years, I just can't get my DH to go for poking nails into the siding (same problem with window boxes)! I'll post the link if anyone is interested? If I recall, what was done with house trellising was really impressive.

LeBug I remember you talking about that story with your seed, didn't remember it was the cherokee bean!!! that is the one, I read it got thorns, but it is so pretty and is drought tolerant so I wanted to try it. I'll dig mine up and try that, thanks :)

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Yes!!! Post pics of trellises....maybe a new thread. I am in the market to cover up a big red brick wall, do a little red brick corner, and add some taller things in my garden. I have the go ahead to drill holes, and all, but he's dragging feet on actually DOING IT. LOL!

Suzy

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

Last year I planted a bunch of Euomomis seed. To get them to germinate it takes alot of heat and light, but no sun.

I think I had about 50 seeds that came up. They spent the whole year looking like just one teeny tiny leaf. kept them in semi shade and sun and watered everyday cuz of the heat. The just now starting to come up. The seed is a tiny bulb no bigger than a m&m. They just starting their first leaf up ad hope they do more this year than last.

I don't think I wil ever start them from seed again. It gonan be or five years before them bulbs get big enough to flower. Think I look and see when Home depot or lowe's gets some bulbs in and buy them.

Nelson, NH(Zone 5a)

Star-You can also grow eucomis from 1" pieces of leaf. This is a pic sterhill posted-8 months to small plants.
