Wind-Beidermeir group-I put B group because I can never spell it right!!LOL
Lea-I don't beleive that about the water because all the stuff that comes out of my sprinklers is cold and so is everything out of my spigot and I never let it warm up...also, all the cehies looked good, had a few that were unsavabel-a couple in the middle that weren't rooted at all, but no biggie, what can ya do-it was a couple, so now I know that for EVERY flat I order I will account for a couple losses and that should cover it-it was only like 1 sunrise, 1 sundown and about 4 summer sky...we had a couple losses in almost every flat, so I am glad that I accounted for the losses w/ most of the order...
Suzy-have fun in FL during our cold snap(sticking my tongue out at ya)
Cottage Garden Seed Swap & Chat #11
That's good Fairy, I'm not worried about it, I'll just plant what I get :) And so will everyone else, everyone in that coop seemed to be pretty nice about things happening like that, you had some good people show up for it don't you think :)
I need to et these violets to you, they are blooming their little heads off the blue picotee is anyway, that's the one I'm going to send but I had a lot of them so I'll send you a whole 6 pack :)
Whatever you want Lea:) Yes I think we did have some good eggs in it, but I have no doubt that I will have a couple turds in the group-OMG-I just thought about it-if Suzy is in FL I hope she left instructions for Mr. Clean about that box from me:( DRYAD-call him!!!
She probably left instructions with someone, I think Mr. Clean went too LOL
Ok Fairy dmail me what I'm sending you and I'll get them out this week, not the first of the week though, I have a funeral tomorrow and Bev is having more test this week and I want to be there :)
fairy since I didn't even know what B group columbines were....I'm sure I don't have them which is good, means what I have you don't have! I didn't get any mailed out yesterday but I will tomorrow for you...just made myself a note :) I was working all weekend on school papers and didn't get much else done. I need one of those bumper stickers or license plate frames that says, "I'd rather be Gardening!"

Hi everyone. I have been so busy! I am checking in, but I fell like my brain is too done to report much. I made a seed starting mix that failed miserably and my last batch of seedlings all germinated beautifully and then died including basil, tomatoes, dahlias, tithonia and others I can't recall. I haven't the heart to start more right yet, so I've just beenpotting the older ones up to the next size.
Lea-I hope you and Bev are hanging in there. I'm still thinking of you.
Stacey-I'm excited to get my Campanula Pink Octopus. I want to see this plant in living color!!-Kath
Happy Birthday Lebug! :)
Happy Birthday grampapa!
Thanks, Meredith! Don't know what I'll do today. It's raining, so no outdoor stuff. Yesterday I potted up 15 alpine strawberries and it didn't make a dent in the seedlings in the little flat. I had thought there were about 50, but there have to be at least 75.
Lea & grampapa-HAPPY BDAY!!!
grampapa-I hope you get your package today-there is a little surprise in it for you-Lea-if I had known you waould've had 1 too!!! Here are some hugs ladies (((()))))!!
Spent my weekend (after I recouperated) transplanting as it looks like it may still be a little bit B4 things get planted outdoors...
Oh grampapa, your birthday is the same day as mine, cool! Happy Birthday! Hope you get everything planted that you want to and have a great day!
Thank you Meredith for the birthday wish! It's going to be a beautiful day here until this evening then it's suppose to storm, have a busy day going, dad's last older friend passed so we are going to a funeral this morning then off to get a used kiddie pool for my dog from a friend lol
Kath, thanks for the kind thoughts :) Bev. is having more tests this week we should find out today when she has to go for them :)
Thanks Fairy and I'm wondering about the weather too I was getting ready to put some seedlings outside and the weather man mentioned that we still have some cold weather coming around the first of May :(
Wind your cukes look so happy! Thanks for the Birthday Wish, do you think one of those hats will fit me? LOL I bring my dog in the house if I know it's going to storm, doggies just don't like thunder :)
My neighbor and I were going to sneak out after dad went to bed Sat. night to celebrate our birthday, hers is the day after mine, and she got a virus so we didn't get to go, isn't it awful having to sneak out when your are 59 yrs. old! Dad won't go to sleep if he knows I'm not at home LOL But now we are shooting for next weekend :)
Hey gang! Sorry I'm still so silent - will catch up soon, I promise - but I wanted to jump in and wish Lea and Grampapa a VERY happy birthday!!!!
ditto Robin!
Happy Birthday Lea!!!!
Happy Birthday Grampapa!!!
I am an April b-day, too! Mine was the 10th
Thanks Kath! I'm sorry I didn't see your birthday :( HAPPY BIRTHDAY! ;-) You will have to tell us what you did? Did you plant more seeds lol, I'd send you a pretty picture but I don't know how to do that :) Gosh I can't believe I missed that! So sorry!
I'm getting ready to hit the bed, been a long day lol I don't do mornings well and I've been up since 6 lol You know I'm not as young as I used to be LOL
Thanks pamsue!!!
Is Suzy getting back home today, I'm worried about her plants it got so cold last night and it's suppose to get colder tonite.
Happy belated Birthday Lea & Jan!
Thanks Susy!
I'm starting to have trouble with my lights downstairs now the cord is getting hot I noticed it last night guess I need to hook another extension to it to divide the light, it's so close to time to get them all outside I don't want any trouble now LOL And no fires! I need more plugs on the wall downstairs!
*grounded* plugs! You might want to consider plugging your lights into one of those power strips with a surge protector, too... mine are set up that way, partly for the additional protection and partly because they came with such short little cords so I used the power strips to string all the lights together... then hooked up a heavy duty timer and attached the whole thing to a heavy duty (3 prong, everything is 3 prong) extension cord that goes to the outlet.
No fires! yes, indeed. :-)
I have several of those powers strips, good ones, I have 5 plantstands downstairs each has three shelves except for one having four shelves and three outlets in the wall, you can imagine how many lights to hook up with two hoods on each shelf lol
How many lights do you have Critter or do you have a greenhouse I bet you have a greenhouse! :P
When I was at wally worl yesterday I did look at the lights and the shelving units and think I could have a plant shelf and some lights for pretty cheap-I didn't know they had ones just for plants!! How neat-I know what santa is bringing me this year and I promise to be a VERY good girl!!LOL
I do lust after a greenhouse, but DH pointed out that the cost of heating a greenhouse would probably pay for buying and running a whole lot of lights. I've got enough space under lights for 24 flats, if I fill the shelves to the max, plus I do winter sowing containers outside... that's enough to keep me busy and then some!
I should really cut down on mine a lot of them end up in pots for the next year and then it repeats it's self the next year, just like seeds LOL I just can't believe you don't have a greenhouse I've just always imagined you with one you have been on here so long but the heating of a greenhouse is a good enough reason not to have it for sure esp. now with the utilities getting so high, I would just like to have one to put my plants out in when it's time to start taking them outside it would be soo much easier than going up and down 12 stairs with them all of the time! Like my tomatoes I brought in last night I didn't even take them downstairs I just set them in front of a window and I will hope for the best for three days lol They are out right now though but it's still a little chilly then this weekend, I think, it's getting down in the 30's again!
LeBug, did you read my Seed Starting 101 article about hardening off? I don't do the in-out-in-out waltz with my seedlings... I protect them with row cover, up against the foundation wall, or I use those little mini plastic covered "greenhouses" (look for them on clearance shelves in late spring or early summer).
I've contemplated an unheated greenhouse, I'm just not sure how much good it would do me. To have a place to overwinter things where they could get a head start in spring would be awfully nice. Pretty much doing the same thing you are, critter, aaahhh, but it is nice to dream, lol.
Hi everyone! Lea-you didn't miss my b-day-I didn't have it so it showed-I didn't know you could. I changed it so next year you'll know!! LOL!
Stacey, I got my plants-they are cute. I can't wait to see those blooms (on the campanula pink octopus). Thanks!!
Remember how we were talking about saving money by planting with compst or cheaper stuff in the bottom and seed starter on top. I honestly think that's why all my seeds were doing so well. I had so many things die when I bought bulk supplies and made the mix. I think it's because it held the moisture and gave them extra nourishment as the roots grew. All speculation, but it's my two cents!!
I got my first Japanes Morning Glory bloom today. I took pics, but I think my cord is upstairs. Maybe I'll get a chance tomorrow. NIght!-Kath
I used the cheapest soli wally world had for the bottom 3rd and the juiffy for the top 3rd and had about 80% germination-I was happy with the results-I used about 2/3 of a bag of the reg soil and 1 bag of jiffy-so like about $4 total...not too bad-I think you are right flower-that jiffy dries out sooooo fast that I think the other soil helped to hold more water-as I transplanted, I had roots all the way down the styro cups (about 3.5") and had no issues-just sliced the side of the cup, took out the whole thing and threw it in a bigger one:)
good morning :)
I'm tripping over all our plants that I drug back into the house last night. It got really cold last night. The ones I left out, I draped plastic trash bags over.
My one geranium that the dog bumped into and broke the tip off is growing a new shoot and the broken shoot did root just by sticking it into some potting soil! so now I'll have one more geranium :)
have to run....have a microbiology lab practical final this am......ugggggggh
Wind those geraniums are pretty tough, huh? I had a seedling that I overwatered, and it damped off. I stuck the top of the tiny thing (I mean tiny, tiny) in another pot of soil, and I'll be darned if it didn't grow new roots. : )
Good Luck on your final. : )
~Lucy
That makes me hopeful-I have 2 martha washington geraniums, and as we all know theyare pricy for an annual-so this year I am going to try cuttings from them so that maybe I can save my $20!!
Good morning everyone! Now Suzy has me trying to figure out how to tell if there will be a frost. It looks like there was one last night, but I looked at the actual recorded data and the temp was 47F and the dew point was 47, doesn't this seem too warm to get a frost? So maybe that white stuff on all my plants and windshields isn't frost?

I was too confused by that whole thing...
I went out and took a closer look and it appears the rain drops on the plants looked white from far away. Thank goodness because I had some seedlings out and I got a little worried. Phew :)
Added - I unknowingly was looking at the previous nights recorded temps. I just checked again and it said the low was 42F and the last dew point I can see was 40 at 6:45 pm so it probably dropped down into the 30's. The reason I double checked was because after I posted I noticed an ashtray that had iced over pretty good. Hopefully the seedlings will be fine because they were in the zip up greenhouse which is in a protected spot.

Critter, I use the row covers too and on my little greenhouses to, the only reason I’m bringing plants in is it’s my tomatoes and peppers they don’t like this cold air even in the little greenhouses, I lost a few last year from it getting so cold, I even put old sheets on the bottom shelf in my gh to keep the wind from blowing around inside :) I found two greenhouses at the dollar store last fall a little different than what I had didn’t have as many shelves but they were only $9, I paid $14 for the same thing that they didn’t sell last fall and had it out a couple of weeks ago but the cover fits my other gh so it was worth it, I love those covers but they don’t last very long, well maybe the do I just expect too much out of them lol I have had some of them for a few years :)
Kath, I’m glad you put your birthday to show for next year, I really hated it that I missed it but sometimes I forget to look at it too I could mark it on the calendar but that doesn’t work either I never look at it lol
Wind, so glad your geranium rotted for you!
Meredith, I’m so glad I don’t live in a colder area lol I just don’t think I could deal with those temps this time of year when I get itchy to put my plants out it must drive you crazy LOL
Has anyone had any luck with their collected aster seeds? So far I’ve had Purple Dome and the New England Aster to come up, looks like that is going to be about it :( I was really wanting that taller one and the pink was that the same one? lol
I have three Bowman’s Roots 8^) Oh yeah! And didn’t even know to cover the seeds, I planted two jugs so I’m covering the one that hasn’t germinated.
OMG! My blue splash is blooming and it is soo pretty I thought the penny purple were pretty but I must say I think I like this one better, Fairy I'll have to send you at least one of these! I think they are perennials so they should come back next year :)
Lebug, the weather here is always wack in mid spring, can you believe I have frozen water outside after it being an average of 80F all week?! :O My new england aster gets like 4 ft tal after being cut back half in june, so consider that one a tall one :) I don't know if you got those seeds from my stash or not.
I think today will be a good day to bring some plants out for fresh air for a couple hours :)
Has any one tried just putting an old laundry basket over them?
Hi Kids, I am back!!! Happy Birthday to Gram (Jan) and Lea!!!
We had a great time, ate like piggies, and it was really warm and sunny, I had PLENTY of time to go mall shoppiing, but no time to go plant shopping. I ended up bringing home some really cheap New Guinea Impatiens that were a lot cheaper than here (in gallon pots) and then I got 5 different Coleuses. BIG ones. I already took cuttings from them. 88c each! No time to go to a decent garden center, so I went to Home Depot. There was hardly any time to wrap them, but they came through with flying (literally) colors!
I'll post more on what has been said before I left, but my plants were all safetly tucked in because I knew it would be cold while I was gone. Fairy, I had my sister feed the dog, play with him and get the mail and unpack the plants, so they were upacked within about 1/2 hour of being delivered. :)) They all look good except a dead Sunrise??? something Echinacea with 4 roots, so I potted it already and will keep an eye on it. Those things are so tempermental. I don't think I had one come back from last year and they were bought in big nursery pots for $17.99 +/-
More later - off to meet my mom & sister at the cardiologist for a pacemaker consultation.
Suzy
