I have a clematis growing on my mailbox. Im not sure what variety but it blooms in spring and usually has more blooms periodically through summer. The flowers are the big ones. I live in Zone 6a. Last year it was beautiful, covered the whole mailbox. I didnt do anything to it before winter. So over winter i just had a mailbox covered in a jumble of woody tangled stems. This year it only seems to be buding out in a very few spots. Most of the jumble of vines is just woody, no green at all, no signs of any life. According to my journal it was completely green by this time last year. What do i need to do??
Clematis
Get rid of all the dried, woody stuff. Cut it, don't pull it or you might pull the out roots too. If you look real close you'll probably see signs of life near the bottom. I cut mine back a few weeks ago and it's already sending up new shoots.
So is it normal for it to die back like that? My hope was to have it completely cover the mailbox, but it seems like if i have to cut it back every year it will never get there. It doesn't spread very fast.
They (Clemantis) all look like that in the Spring. Don't worry, it will come back just as big.
