I know this is probably a silly question but....how do I know when it's time to start watering my perennials? Most of mine are hosta or other shade plants like ferns and astilbe. They are all just barely breaking the suface of the soil right now....up by maybe half an inch, on average. The hydrangea has green buds but no leaves. It's seems to be unusually dry here for this time of year...I don't remember watering this time last year because it's usually such a rainy month, I guess. Is it time to break out the hose, or is there some reason to wait?
Should I be watering now?
Whenever you're in doubt about watering, try sticking your finger down a couple inches into the soil (assuming it's not still frozen of course!). If it's feeling dry a couple inches down, I'd water them but if it still feels damp then you're OK for a little while yet.
Thanks ecrane- you are always very helpful, and I appreciate it.
