Just got home, temps dropping so out I go to bring in the flowers..spent mega $$$ on them, no sense taking a chance..house can look pretty can't it...
Power Point, yuk..I stay away from anything that technical..
Fancyvan, you show dogs as well, might have missed it, what breed are your dogs...
My sister Sharon also breeds and shows dogs..always trying to support her endeavors..thought you might be interested...

What's happening in your neighborhood today...pt3
Betty my dogs are Shelties, I dont 'show' them but we compete in Agility from time to time. They are 11 this spring and I am not competing much anymore and thinking of switching to Rally-O. Much easier on my joints!
Took a look at the PP presentation ( which one the the Hort Staff helped me do last year) and decided to leave well enough alone! Thursday I will go get the equipment and have a lesson .
Its nice to have it because before now I was doing this presentation with taping up pictures on a board or a wall or whatever! Saves a lot of tape!
Carol
I know however you decide to do your presentation it will be top notch, you put a lot of yourself into the projects you do.

Nice puppies so white!
We had a super day in Edmonton and I finally have the G house going again. Lynn got a bigger better heater for it and we tried to run it through the -10 but when it hit -18 everything came in. On Sunday it all got put back out and today I was out transplanting the seed trays and the begonias into bigger pots. The Cana's are much happier out here and have been much happier in the one day they have spent out in their buckets ( the big white ones in the back right corner)
Here is a photo of the begining of our project. More is coming back from Lynn's soon too.
Ann
Shelties are beautiful dogs, Sailor is a Border Collie (9) and I can relate to the amount of energy I need to play ball with her..even while I sleep she's nudging me and dropping the ball ready for play NOT....lol
Annabell what I wouldn't give for a greenhouse..however, with the snow and temps being as they are here in the winter I'd not be able to use it without costing an arm/leg in hydro..look at those plants...bet you so enjoy working out there..such a sense of accomplishment and your garden awaits them....
Calling for a high of 10 today! Drizzly when I got home last night so my commitment to working out in the gardens for an hour didn't mature...always tonight...I did bring all the flower pots and hangers in though, a couple were drooping slightly but am sure they'll be ok...
Annabell .. WOW .. a greenhouse is a great thing .. mine is decrepit now and commonly referred to as 'The Chipmunk Hotel' .. it's over 25 years old .. and was a glory in its day .. but .. never kept it up .. it's quite small .. has a few glass panes missing here n there .. so it'd be a stretch to heat it fer sure. Our Westie, Lilly, won out in the 'summer funds' dept this year. Her enclosure is costing a 'tidy sum' .. but it will surely give us peace of mind .. and give Lilly FREEDOM to run, not pull us around on her lead :-)
Betty .. yer 'Pup in laws' are amazing .. your sister must have the patience of Job to do what she does .. and .. a HUGE return for that in millions of puppy kisses as a reward .. gotta LUV puppy kisses :-)
Another cool one here today and the list of chores extends by the minute it seems .. ahh well .. once done .. I always feel better ... today I pick up Avon ordered weeks ago .. and .. it'll be like Xmas as I have forgotten most of what I ordered LOL
Enoy your day everyone

Hello from the East Coast of Canada. Still rather chilly and rainy here. We did have a few weeks of nice weather before this. The winter ice is in as far as the eye can see. Waiting for a south wind to send it on its way. My father use to say the weather will never warm up until the red ice floats by, (ice from PEI which is red from their soil) and so far there is no sign of the red ice. I am amazed at what is sticking out of the ground. The crocuses are in full bloom, that is when they have seen the sun, tulips are emerging, same with the daffs. I see signs of life in a lot of other plants. Waiting for some nice weather to do some yard clean-up.
Did anyone try wintersowing? I planted a couple of dozen containers in January but still nothing showing, wondering what I did wrong. Followed the directions but must have miscalculated something along the way.
Barb
Seems like the plants are in spring mode but the weather isn't. I got drenched yesterday while pulling stock at the nursery. It came down heavily for quite a while and I wasn't dressed for it. It was a mixed bag all day yesterday but atleast no hail or snow. Hopefully we'll get some typical April weather instead of February weather.
Here's a Magnolia infront of "The Lions" mountains behind.
Beautiful Magnolia Growin! I would love to have one here as they are so stunning with their blooms and later with their shiny leaves.
Bettypauze and MarilynS Greenhouse was due to Jagonjune as we used to use her foyer and back atrium to start everything and she got this greenhouse but it was too big for her yard and wondered if it would fit here. My DH put it together over a weekend and lots of short words , lol. It is still a shared project but I sure seem to have the benifet. Don't heat it much as day time temps take it to 90. Just have the heat come on if it gets too close to 0. The heater has a thermostat so it's very convienent. (Jagon got that too when the little heater I was useing wasn't working too well.
We hope to have it filled in a bit and then leave some tomatoes in it to lengthen the time we have fresh vegies.
We are supposed to be having a high of 14 and maybe showers too so we will see, the rain would be nice to get some of the dust down.
Ann
Betty I missed that link to your sisters website - they are lovely dogs. A friend of mine has an American Eskimo/sheltie mix - a real sweetie and we recently had the same mix come into rescue. Seems like there might be somebody around here breeding the cross not something I approve of.
Temps supposedly dropping here for a few days and maybe some rain or a bit more snow coming soon! Got some beds cleared off yesterday and more today I hope.
And I better decided soon what I will do about the grass since I am planning on entering the garden competition this year.
Barb (Bluecow) welcome to this chatty group..imagine red ice..I can add that to my list of 'what did I learn today'?
'M' a greenhouse..oh my, could you fix up the few panes of glass? I'm tempted to stop at home depot on my way home to purchase one of those little stands with plastic to put my seedlings in..not sure if it would be worth it though...
Yes those dogs are beautiful, one of them did the show in N.Y.C. but we had a warm spell just before and they started to shed..she keeps these in the house so you can imagine the 'hair'..one lady who spins would come and get it..think she made socks with the wool...
OMG fancyvan, my sister would have a fit..lol..shucks I can at 60 adopt children easier than you can get one of her pups..
Growin, look at those mountains, breathtaking..magnolia's, a vision in blooom aren't they..can't grow them in my climate I'm sure...
It's lunch, time to go get some fresh air..wore a coat today because it's still quite nippy...talk later..
Bettypauze, I just did a quick search and it seems there are quite a few Magnolias for Zone 5b: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/advanced.php?nn%5B16%5D=13&nn%5B1%5D=0&nn%5B2%5D=0&nn%5B3%5D=9&nn%5B4%5D=0&nn%5B5%5D=0&nn%5B6%5D=2&nn%5B7%5D=0&nn%5B8%5D=0&nn%5B9%5D=0&nn%5B23%5D=0&nn%5B10%5D=0&nn%5B12%5D=0&sname=Plants&Search.x=33&Search.y=9 at the bottom of the page. This thread has Magnolia photos from your zone: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/823944/
Thank you, will be checking out local nurseries..have seen some there before but I forget what shrub I bought and it did not fare well and was told that just because it is sold in your area it doesn't mean it will prosper in your region..kind of odd, so never thought of purchasing such a delicate tree...thanks for the site..
Great to read your post Barb .. and I'm with Betty .. 'red ice ' is something new for me as well .. have been to PEI and seen the 'red soil' though .. Also been on the ferry from NS to PEI and about lost me lunch too LoL
Ann .. I think I was in the forum with you and Jagonjune last summer re the greenhouse .. I was SO going to fix up mine .. BUT (always that BUT) .. Lilly took priority .. I do think though, Betty, that if the glass panes were replaced .. and the lilttle building CLEANED out (if there's SPIDERS I am NOT there) DH or my bud would have to venture inside .. ya know what .. am gonna take some pics so you can 'scope it out' ....
MAGNOLIAS .. ahhhhhhhhh .. the fragrance is so wonderful .. and if I go to our local Conservatory I can revel in it :-)
However .. growing one in Thunder Bay would be tant amount to miraculous !!!
It was COLD here today .. then this aft we kinda got a temp hike because the wind off Lake Superior took a WEE nap .. but .. it's back again ...
I was planning on planting my Morning Glory seeds this weekend .. but .. since the fencing guys will be putzing about in the area around my clothesline pole .. I guess I'll wait .. OR .. plant them somewhere else :-)
Best get supper on the go ..
Enjoy your evening
~M~
So I got the call today to finally get the palm seed harvest done and got a truckload. I guess I'll be pickin' seed for atleast a week. They are in these large clusters and need to be hand picked. They look like blueberries and I've been doing this every year for a few years. Turns out these seed produce some very hardy little palms.
The greenhouse pics are inspiring. I brought all my plants indoors duing the cold snap toobut I have determined that come what may, I will trust my little heater to kepp my greenhouse warm! I too love Shelties and if my family were not allergic that would be the pet I would have! Joanne N, did you say FOUR rain barrels? Do you win a prize or what:? Fun to hear what the weather is across Canada. I am bracing mysel for more of the White Stuff.
Theresa
Theresa ... you have GOT to be kidding re the 'WHITE STUFF' ... jeez .. enough already.
Thunder Bay has awakened to sun, but it's pretty cool out there. Our 'burn barrel' is turned upside down .. its contents (not much) strewn over a small area .. so .. I guess it's 'watch my back time' re the Black Bears :-(
As I sit here and type this .. my cat, Smokey, is doing his gutteral meowl out on the patio .. no doubt I'll go to let him in and find him with some ?treasure? .. hopefully NOT alive .. I do so hate that one little flaw in a cat !!!! ..
Growin .. I am sitting back and smiling .. nice Chev !! As well .. the thoughts of Palms .. well .. good luck to ya .. :-)
Gonna make 'Dog Biscuits' today .. ought to be a challenge .. have to find my cookie cutters first though.
Take care out there~~
~M~
Woke up to a dusting of the White Stuff this morning. Sigh. Will it ever be spring??? Theresa - need all those rain barrels to water my orchids. 42 now. Oh dear. Want to go to Paramount's soon??? You need to catch up. LOL.
No white stuff in my neighborhood Joanne and I am not so far away from you but you are higher of course. Obviously there was rain here which makes me very happy as the lawn guys sprayed on Monday and I was supposed to water yesterday. However my watering system is not turned on yet and I kept my fingers crossed for a bit of rain which was predicted! Didnt want to haul a hose around and hand water.
Ok folks the white stuff is trying really hard to make it to the ground today in Edmonton. Big puffy things that go splat when they hit. It will be nice to have a clean air smell as it was very dusty around here.
Greenhouse has to do now as there will not be room for all that stuff inside.
Things are greening up and looking super.
Ann
Started out with blue sky, however it's darkening, calling for rain and it's actually 33 degrees..had frost on my car windshield this morning..when will it leave..lol..although the temps are suppose to rise over the next week, rain is in the forcast for almost each and every day..I know,Iknow, still better than the white stuff...
Am hoping though that Friday aft. the grass will be ok to mow..should really do it after work but tonight I teach decorative painting and by the time I get home at 6:30 - girls come at 7:00 and not likely to leave by 10:30 no time...
I've lots planned for the weekend...
So what is on your agenda today, doing anything special..."M" is making dog biscuits, that sounds exciting..I don't do "COOKING" so can't possibly see me doing the biscuits..
How far Grow_Jo are you from fancyvan...
By the way...loooove the truck..
Betty, I'm only 7 or 8 km from fancyvan... She let's me visit her lovely yard upon occasion. ;-)
Forecast here is shaping up to me much better than a few days ago; looks like most of the white stuff is going to pass us by and go to Edmonton. LOL. (sorry Ann).
Joanne
Shes not far away but she is quite a bit higher altitude .
WEll .. if anyone wants the doggie biscuit recipe .. ask me .. easy easy and Lilly LOVES them (today) :-)
Had over (and I am not exaggerating) 100 Grackles in my yard for most of the day and in varying locals .. a deer would approach and it would be like a wall of black flying away. My bud feels they may be after grubs .. I can't see tha t as the terrain they were pecking about on is a mess of deer hoof imprints .. all squooshed into the ground ..
Went for dinner with the gurls from my grade 12 graduating class .. there were 12 of us .. 4 missing (working or other commitments) some of us were in school together from grade ONE !!!! Kind of amazing when ya think about it ... nurses, teachers, a pharmacist, a lawyer ... but basically ALL still in Thunder Bay ..
If anyone is going to Applebees soon .. try the Parmesan Tilapia ... YUMmmmmmmmm :-) course I LOVE fish ..
I best hit the pit .. more AC estimates tomorrow morning .. last one .. hopefully I can choose after this one and get it installed BEFORE the ?HOT? weather comes along !
~M~
I make doggy treats too Marilyn. What is yours?
Turned out to be a nice sunny day today. Perfect for being a volunteer "Ivy Buster" at the botanical garden. As a group of volunteers we yanked and pulled and ripped as much ivy as we could in a few hours. It sure looked better after taking some of this invasive plant out. Got some of the invasive Daphne & Himalayan Blackberry too.
MarilynneS, there's an additional pic of my truck, Mabelline, here: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=4796365
A great reliable truck with a little character. This thread http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/828842/ talks about someone who's had Trachycarpus fortunei (Windmill Palm) seedlings in the ground and they're surviving in Toronto for a few years. Maybe Thunder Bay needs a few. I like Grackles.
Armeria juniperifolia 'Bevan's Variety'
Mornin all ..
Well Growin .. the Grackles (maybe Starlings) are back .. they flew up into the tops of the Poplar trees as I dumped the buckets of corn for the deer this morning.. lawsie what a commotion .. even the deer took notice ..!!
WIll look up the links you provided re the truck .. have seen a few in TBay as we seem to have an awful lot of 'vehicle refurbishers' :-) the model you drive always looks so 'sturdy ' to me. A Standard transmission and moi do not the same road drive !!
The Palms .. no doubt our Conservatory has them .. they have Banana trees producing fruit :-)
Fancy .. I'll DMail ya the recipe for the biscuits .. unless others want it .. that's what 'copy & paste' is all about.
SUNNY SUNNY here again today .. supposed to go to +8 (or so) .. I see my Delphinium or Phlox (or both) have poked through the dirt .., and the sweet little pansy that hung on from last year is still aflower ..
Best get a boodle on .. clothes are ready to be hung out ..
Enjoy your day everyone :-)
~M~
Growin Love the truck photo, omg look at those yellow beauties..my SIL has an antique truck much the same..my DB Bernie and she made a back fibreglass top and now they've made a sound system for the back..unit painted same yellow and she's airbrushed casino like scene on the unit..truck the same, the hood apparently when finished will look like an overturned poker table with chips, cards and the rest..very creative...
I'd appreciate cookie recipe as well...can't make 'human' cookies but perhaps I'll excell at 'canine' treats...lol
Lots of action in my garden as well, can't believe the growth in just a few weeks...oh, did I mention I didn't get to shop for long on Monday night but did see 'magnolia' trees at Walmart 3 & 4 ft. high for $14.98..checked out the tag and says they are fine for our region so perhaps tonight I'll check at Walmart in Midland and maybe they'll have some as well..will be exciting..just not sure where to plant it...
Growin, sounds as though there is a lot of manual labor involved in your volunteering..bet you all enjoy getting the grounds into shape though...
41 degrees coming in this morning..might hit 56 they say..then overcast later and rain off and on for 3 days..there goes Sat. but will have faith..weather can change from hour to hour...
Well everyone here is out of the office today so have to entertain myself...did bring some painting in with me so what to do what to do..should just sit, feet up and enjoy...
Bit of icy snow cover. Hopefully the sun gets rid of that quickly. Looks like it will be mostly sunny, but there are some dark clouds around. High of 12C for today
A skiff of snow here too - it will disappear quickly I think.
Got half of another perennial bed cleared yesterday -= should be done with the rest in a couple of days then on to the front yard - not so much leaf mulch there but mostly plants not cut down last fall. Really behind this year.
Off to the Hort. office this morning after I walk the dogs to pick up the laptop and power point projector - this afternoon speaking about Assisted Gardening to a group of seniors.
Yesterday also had an extra shift at Lougheed House doing tours with a large group of seniors from Lethbridge up to the big city for the day!
Looks like my current foster sheltie may have her new home- a family in Edmonton want her ( sight unseen!) and they are coming to visit Sat. afternoon - hope they take her home with them - I have had her almost a month - she is a sweetie!
Can you find the wildlife in this pic?
OMG...lets see, I thought I saw a praying mantis (but it was brown) then I thought a leaf look like a froggie, hmmm...going back to check out that photo..it's a good one..thanks..probably will keep me entertained till leaving the office...lol
To the left and at the bottom 3/4 way down, could it be a 'snake'?
So far I have seen .. ahem .. a MAN (very small) .. a squirrel, a cat, a puppy and a chipmunk ... holy COW (no I did not sees a cow) talk about a vivid imagination .. I'm with Betty .. goin back for another 'BOO' :-)
GREAT challenge Fancy :-)
Still windy here .. but the GLORIOUS sun remained all day !! Still shining .. Wooo Hooo !!!!
~M~
I am high and dry but the St John river has flooded. Many of the streets are like canals. The city and surounding area is surounded by water.Worst flood in decades AG
nobody is right yet.
Well .. I looked at it for another 10 minutes and have drawn a blank ... sooooooooo .. am goin bunkies .. busy day tomorrow .. Lilly has to be at the groomers yb 10 .. and after that I am in WARP drive to get stuff done before she is :-)
Rain is predicted Friday afternoon .. s'ok with me .. rain brings flowers :-)
OOOOOOOoooo .. the recipe ... comin up :-)
~M~
This recipe comes from the latest 'Dogs in Canada' magazine. I get it because I belong to the CKC.
Heart Shaped (or whatever shape) applesauce oatmeal cookies
Preheat oven to 350F
Ingredients:
2 cups of Whole wheat Flour
1 cup of oats
1 tsp of cinnamon
1/2 cup of applesauce (I used unsweetened)
1/4 cup of water
1 egg
1 tbsp of either molasses or honey
In a large bowl stir together the flour, oats and cinnamon.
In a smal bowl, combine the applesauce, egg, molasses or honey and water
Add the applesauce mixture to the flour mixture and stir well until blended. On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough out til about a 1/2 inch thick and cut into the shapes you want with a cookie cutter or whatever you have on hand (I used a plastic cap from a water bottle to make some of the cookies smaller :-)
Transfer cookies to a cookie sheet sprayed with a non stick spray.
Bake for 20 to 25 minutes (I chose 22) until golden and firm. Turn the oven off but LEAVE the cookies inside for several hours (2.5 for me) to harden as they cool.
Makes about 2 dozen cookies. Store in a tightly sealed container.
I made 44 cookies .. course I was using a cookie cutter shaped like a small strawberry plus the bottle cap :-)
Lilly LOVES'em
Agedgardener, you ok? My goodness all that flooding..do they give out sandbags, are you being affected? Must be terrible for those who will have so much damage to their homes/land...sending prayers...
"M" thanks for the recipe..tired tonight but will read the instructions and p.u. supplies, doesn't seem to have a whole lot of ingredients...can see Sailor licking her lips as I read off the ingredients..lol
Fancyvan, are we close? can you give us a hint..shucks if you don't I'll probably spend the rest of the evening looking for it...
Look for a color which does not really fit.
Fancy
It's a Bee! good one!
Cold here and not too warm untill the weekend so I hope we don't get too much frost!
Ann
Good one Carol. I could not find anything but a snail shell center right behind hose. LOL
