Woo Hoo Growin .. you have a 'Cinco de Nineo' BDay :-) A bud had one today and rec'd an Alaskan cruise to be taken in Sept. .. lucky lady ..
Ann .. I ALWAYS wonder where the darned water goes .. specially when the ground starts to dry out !!! I am hoping the MINIMAL snow we rec'd over the winter will put SOME water into the well !!!!
Good luck with your trip (and grandmothering) in the west :-) Exciting times ...
Jargon .. how nice to have 2 new little bodies teetering around your place .. safe from any harm .. as for Czar .. awwwwww .. whatcha gonna do .. poor wee fella ... I'd about LOL re the paw bath he gives himself.
Molly is laying a HEAVY guilt trip on my son and his family re her 'halo' .. she seems to bat the kids about a bit .. course .. kids being kids .. they like to help her !!!!
The Robins ar in fine vocal form right now ... and it's SPLENDIFEROUS :-)
~M~
What's happening in your neighborhood today...pt3
Growin
Beautiful photos ! I have been given an idea or two so I'll have to see if the budget can handle it.
Birthdays a grand things ... I have now been blessed with celebrating for at least a month each year!
MarilynneS thanks for the image of Czar as a " poor wee fella" if you got to see him he is not a wee fella! LOL unless you were thinking of a wee as in pee.....
Also there are some super looking laminate counter tops that look like stone, during our reno 4 yrs ago I too checked out granite but the cost was steep for the size I was heading for. I had the edges rolled and the ends rounded to imitate the way it might look in stone. I picked some laminate which is more like a sandstone look and a few folks have been fooled in the begining.
Oops back to the topic, its raining here too and I am grateful for the rain as it could be snow for us in the praires. My tulips are doing their darnedest to grow and a few dandlions have flowered.
Ann
Well the morning was not bad although coolish so the painters were here finishing powerwashing the house and shed and getting started on the fence trim but early afternoon things cooled down and they had to quit - had small hail for a minute or so and then it rained rest of afternoon . Cleared now but rain again tomorrow and probably snow too thru Thursday night and Friday morning!
Ah well the rain will be good for the plants!
ViolaAnn, I'd love to get together! I'm downtown so it sounds like a great reason to do some garden visits and maybe some plant buying trips.
I feel for Czar. Makes me cringe just thinking about it. No wonder he's cranky.
It is my 'Cinco de Nineo' BDay but, believe it or not, I'm working all day. I said I can't add so didn't realize Friday was my bday. I would'a rather be at the gardens or in my garden. I did spend a few hours pulling Ivy today at VanDusen - we did about the same amount as 2 cars worth. It opens up an amazing amount of space for new beds of plants.
My Five-fingered Maidenhair Fern is growing out nicely on the porch.
Growin You need to spend less time at 'Sun Yat Sen's " garden and look at the creation sitting all around you on Vancouver Island. This is a suggestion not a criticism. I too love the creative attempt of man/women on their lives but it pales in the grandeur of the world around us.
Oh, I have plans of heading to Vancouver Island for a good vacation with the truck & trailer this year. I kinda grew up on the Gulf Islands and actually had a dream about living there last night. One day I'll move there.
I have spent a lot of time on the Island. Where did you grow up?
In Vancouver with weekends and summers on Galiano Island since 72. I'd move to the islands or Vancouver Island in a second if I could. There are many parts of Vancouver Island I haven't been to or haven't been to in a long time. It was the one big trip I was gonna do to celebrate BC150.
We should do a 'house' swap..lol..forget swapping plants..I could visit BC, you could visit Georgian Bay, could get to see a little of the East Coast, Alberta..now wouldn't that be the swap of a lifetime...maybe then we could afford to see all of Ontario...
Do you want me to start planning? lol...vacation time is coming...
Rained quite heavily yesterday aft. and most of the evening..sure hope the forecast improves for the weekend...would be so nice to have sunshine on Sunday to celebrate Mothers' Day...
went out with Sailor this morning and brrr need a jacket for sure..all ready to head to the city, try not to think of that 100 mile drive..sure wish we got the ok to move to Innisfil, would save half the travelling time every day..oh well, just a dream..did walk the garden, worked with the hops, lordy they are starting to trail around the arbour..last year was my first year and I was quite impressed with the growth, this year I'll throw in some morning glories and perhaps a few other climbers and see the results..
How is Czar doing, accepting his new identify, calming down?
Must get moving, still have coffee to drink, pack up some materials I need to entertain myself today..lol..and they call it 'work'
Annabelle, there is not such thing as keeping to the thread..not a weather thread a 'getting to know you and your neighborhood? Should change the next thread name right...a place where ALL are welcome..
Been fun reading about your day..
Talk later..
Well Fancy .. as I sit here watching the weather channel ... I can see you're not going to be having a very impressive day !!! SNOW ??? Yikes ....
It's sunny here so far, but the furnace keeps coming on so I am thinking that it isn't any too warm outside.
Ann .. I am so LOL at Czar being a 'poor WEE fella' .. I guess it can be taken either way :-)
Furthest west I have been is Tofino and Ucluelet (sp) .. Ucluelet was kinda 'smelly' the day we got there .. fishy smell .. but .. days spent on Long Beach and the forest were awesome !!!! Had 2 Cowichan sweaters made to order in Duncan .. all in all an amazing trip .
Ahhhhhhhhh the granite (faux granite) battle ... I have concluded that I watch WAY too many of those Home Shows on HGTV !!! Seems almost evey home or Condo they show has Laminate flooring (or hard wood) AND .. Granite in the bathrooms and kitchen .. I'm obsessed with the look of the granite .. and our kitchen is quite large .. open concept kinda sorta .. still have a few nore estimates to get .. there is a MAN MADE stone out there called Silestone .. way more expensive than Granite .. it'll be a journey fer sure ..
On with VCARS today .. best get myself half ready so I'll be set to run if called ..
Enjoy your day where ever you are :-)
~Marilynne~
Good morning,
Looks like last night's rain has cleared which might allow me to get a little bit done in the garden. I've got a huge pile of compost which needs to be sifted and moved. But I've got enough projects with deadlines that I might not get a chance to do much about it.
Marilynne - we did a kitchen in 1991 and used just a little bit of granite - on an area where I knead bread and around my cook top, both of which are lower than the regular counter height. That allowed us to afford some granite, but the rest of the countertop just coordinates.
Ann
'Morning all. We're under a snow fall warning today, 10 to 20 cm by tomorrow. Sigh. At least this time of year it usually doesn't stick around long.
Joanne
Hi again
Have had a couple of D mails asking me about VCARS .. as I am thinking it may be an 'Ontario' thing .. I am posting the link to the webpage here in Thunder Bay http://www.tbayvictimservices.com/
Hope it works !!
Just had a visit from my neighbour ... their little Corgi, Dharma, passed away overnite .. she was 10 and really had not been ill .. too sad ... she didn't ask for an autopsy, is having her cremated.
And so it goes ..

I have paddled my kayak all along the west coast of Vancouver Island. I did it in the late 70's and early 80's before the kayak invasion of the island. I have been up to Hot Springs Cove where I sat in the warm water for 3 days without seeing anyone. One of my favorite memories. I loved the lower pool where the cold salt water of high tide would wash over you while the deep warm spring water kept you roasty toasty. It is north of Tofino about 70 miles. A very beautiful paddle. Barkley Sound is where I always think Heaven looks like. Sea Lions, Cod, Salmon, Oysters, Blue Mussels, Basking Shark, Grey whales, and some of the most interesting caves I have ever been in. I would wait for a wave to surf me in to the cave making sure it was not high tide or my face would be scraped off going in and out on the roof of the cave. Once in there I would look immediatly for sea lions and if present get the heck out. They were pretty territorial. I will soon be back to the West Coast to do Nootka Sound.

Wow Soferdig, what an experience..hope you took a lot of photo's..guess I'm not doing the 'swap' so will be staying in Ontario, however, if any of you wish to visit, room will be ready with your names on it...have to check out 'sea lions'...
"M" how sad for your neighbors, but if Dharma was suffering it's for the best..
OMG Joanne, more snow..now is this a norm or is it because Mother Nature is confused this year? let's hope it's a few flakes, lordy you'd lose all your garden plants/shrubs wouldn't you?
Viola Ann, did you get the compost moved?
Yes I do but one picture only remains in my mind when 3 young German girls joined me and in it and as we all know at a hot spring that was exciting. LOL
Too funny, you'll have to dig that photo out and share!
OMG Joanne ... UNREAL !! Fell bad for you and the othe Cowtowners in the Forum .. It'd definitely not 'unusual' here in TBay .. and I sure hope it STAYS AWAY !!!!
Will your plants be OK ?
~M~
And heres what my backyard looks like at 6pm! Thats not snow folks that is hail! at 5pm the whole back yard was covered - some has already melted. We have been putting together raffle baskets for fund raiser next week, went out to buy some last minute items - sky was black when we came out about 330! As we came out of the last store about 4pm the hail started. We were not too far from my house and I did run in but my friend stayed in her car until it stopped. Hail was about the size of my little finger nail and came down hard.
Weather report still predicting snow overnight.
Geez, I've got to move off this hill! Fancy & I don't live very far from each other, but I'm west of her and at a higher elevation. Stupid snow.
You will get this cold wave in T Bay soon. Here in Seattle I had to put on a coat to come to work with the heater. Burrrrrr!
Id rather have snow than hail anyday Jo!
Many years ago I had the experience of watching a passing hail storm strip all my plants - fortunately it was earlly in the gardening saga and I didnt have the amount of plant material I have now but it was pretty sad to watch.
And of course I live in one of the areas known as Hail Alley .
Never had it happen again put hail storms have gone by as close as a couple of blocks so I have been lucky.
Fancy and Joanne
My mom is in Springbank and she loves her garden. I remember a photo of before and after of her delphiniums they were just sticks! Every leaf was gone off every plant. That Hail is very nasty stuff , big or small it is very damaging.
We are supposed to have -3 tonight so I have the begonias pulled to the middle of the greenhouse and turned up the heater to keep up with the cold. I put the tougher stuff on the edges. As long as the wind is kind the heater does a super job. We did have some nice sun today.
Ann
Busy day at work. The weather was up and down all day - little drizzle, fluffy white clouds, a break of blue, then dark clouds. The forecast is cool and wet and in the low teens for the next week and then next weekend it is supposed to go up to 30C. From late winter into summer in one go. I took a bunch of pics at the nursery but not sure if anybody's interested. We got these poodle & Dr. Seuss trees this week. They're about 7/8' or so.
Another sunny (but cool) morning in TBay ..
GOOD GRIEF Fancy & Joanne .. I guess what is said about a pic being woth a thousand words works in your case. And I also am a 'Hail Hater' .. on DHs trip to Wisconsin he missed a very damaging hailstorm by miles. Went to his buds son's home where the storm had hit .. said the damage was devastating. The sons truck had 'ping marks' all over it .. I guess they'll try for $$ for fix up from their insurance company, but something tells me it won't be easy.
Growin .. those trees are amazing .. reminds me of the days I took a 'stab' at Topiary .. NOTHING was safe :-) LoL
In actualy fact I only went after 2 Evergreens .. considering we have lots of them .. the damage (Aesthetic vision) wasn't that bad .. if I ever feel the need to do another 'Edward Scissor Hands impression' I'll call up Johnny Dep !!
I bit the bullet yesterday and subscribed to our local paper (for delivery) .. I sat down and calculated the cost of buying one daily (gas/time/tax) it came to well over $300.00 .. looked online at the rates for our Chronicle Journal (at times called the Comical Journal) and saw it was $215.00 .. kind of another one of those 'NO brainer' situations .. SOooo .. Lilly and I plodded down the driveway this morning at 6:30am .. and no one has arrived as yet to put the holder deal in the ground, nor is the paper anywhere to be seen ... maybe I was too early .. sure did love listening the birdies sing though :-)
Take care everyone TGIF
~M~
Morning all,
Those of you with snow, have courage, this could be the last one..
Drove into work this morning and was pleased to see blue sky but the high might be 50 today..lordy those 2 weeks of high temps sure did spoil us..
Birdies were out singing and trying out the feeders, don't know if the squirrels I sat watching left them much, will have to re-fill tonight..
It's a short day here at the office, we leave at 1:00 on Fridays so just shy of 2 more hours..got here 1/2 hr. late this morning as we stopped at Canal Rd. flower wholesalers..well if I can't have flowers in bloom in my garden, might as well purchase some for the house..
Ended up with 4 large pkgs. of cut flowers, 2 gerber plants, 2 hanging baskets and 2 doz. of roses..roses I'll drop off at the cemetary later this aft. and share the pkgs. Know 1 will be for DIL..
Growin, happy birthday....sure do hope you get mega spoilt..if you don't, go spoil yourself..I find that works...
What's your plans for Mothers' Day girls? I've started prep by forgetting to take the turkey out of the freezer..don't know why the note on freezer door wasn't my first hint..lol
Snow here again although - at least in my part of town - not as much as was predicted. It is very wet and the sun is out so already melting. Not sure if more predicted or that is the end.
Im 'working' my volunteer job at Lougheed House tomorrow ( My Mom is gone and I am not a Mom - except to the 4 legged critters!) It will probably be busy as the restaurant is open so lots of people taking Mom out to lunch!
A sunny high of 18 expected here today. I wish it would start staying a little warmer at night though. That's what the plants need to really take off.
We have a standing tradition for my DMIL - we take dinner to her in the form of KFC, paper plates, etc. so no clean up either :-) I often take her flowers as well to brighten her table.
WELlllllllllllllllllllllll ... Marilynne went to town and went to Canadian Tire and is now the proud owner of a NEW patio set as well as a matching 'Tete a Tete' .. a chair on each side of an attached table .. DH had little probs putting the table together .. and I was able to help (a bit) with the swivel chairs .. and BOY do I like THEM!!! Perfect for 'Bird feeder Squirrel patrol' !!!
We have had sun most of today .. and actually enjoyed some time outside around the new table .. Lilly and Smokey are ever vigilant for the bear (s) .. we all know they're out there .. the burn barrel has been upturned twice this week ...
My Mom passed away several yrs ago .. so .. even though I do not need any special day to remember her .. I will go to the cemetery and say HIYA .. my Dad is alongside of her so he'll get a HIYA as well ..
Am expecting my DS and grandkids on Sunday .. my DIL and myself do NOT see eye to eye .. we live with it ..
Mostly I plan to do YARD WORK as Sunday is looking to be an awesome day here in Tbay.
I'm thinking Lilly and Smokey have also cruised into town and bought me something .. those furries .. ya just never know WHAT they can get up to :-) gonna have to start HIDING my car keys !!!
Time to get supper out :-)
~M~
Czar is going nuts wearing that halo and being kenneled - think i need to train that boy to use a treadmill or kick my running up a notch on distance
Have done absolutely nothing outside in the yard as yet. Full moon isn't until the 20th this year so i am not in any hurry - expecting our last white wash has not been seen as yet (we escaped this last one but the long weekend is still to come and i have encountered a biggy the first week of june some years
house swaps sound like a capital idea - then a person would know that a gardener would be taking care of things - in my case there would be a 90 years plus mother to look out for as well
Jagonjune..we can do it hon, and you are right never thought about the gardening aspect of it..wouldn't it be something...hmmm
Did a walkaround in the garden, it's coming up nicely, only a few early spring plants in bloom..but I'm thrilled with the growth..
Picked up my hanging baskets yesterday along with a few white astilbe and anothe lily..waiting for my boys to arrive later today and perhaps I'll make the Mothers' Day trip into town with them to pick up the trees/shrubs and flowers I have earmarked for my 'Mothers' Day' gift..lol
Lots of projects in mind so better get at it..
Will drop in today to see how you are all doing???
Good morning,
Looks a bit gray outside. I think we are waiting on some rain, but I hope we have some time when I can get into the garden as well. So far this week, other things have gotten in the way. I edit a newsletter for the Canadian Viola Society and the current edition did NOT go together well. But I will get it to the printer today, about a month late. Yay!
DGS slept over and will go to a family concert of the NAC orchestra today with Grandpa. His twin sister did the same last month, although she went to the concert with ME!
The handbell choir which I direct will play in church tomorrow morning and then, other than a take-apart bell polishing session or two, we are done for the season. Ottawa Symphony has its first full orchestra rehearsal, for the concert next week, tomorrow evening. The holiday weekend will be full of rehearsals, unfortunately with the concert on the 20th.
Hope you get in a good weekend of gardening.
Ann
Oops - Edited to change DGD to DGS. I have both - twins, but just one this time.

A Happy good morning to you all from sunny TBAY :-)
Looks as though it's going to be a lovely day to put together a 'tete a tete' :-) BUT .. first .. I have a few items on my plate to tend to .. not the least of which is GROCERIES .. LoL ... helps to have a few things on hand to maintain sustenance .. woman cannot live by wine alone hahahhahah ...
And .. DANG ME .. WalMArt put out their flier and it's chock full of 'this n that' .. I try to avoid WalMart .. but sometimes the deals are quite alluring ..
The Newspaper was delivered this morning, Smokey did NOT dunk his tail into my first cuppa and Lilly completely missed the Squirrel she chases every morning .. ahhhhhhhhhh life is good ..
Ann .. best of luck on Sunday and enjoy your DGD
June .. I sure hope Czar is going to be 'halo free' soon .. poor fella ..
Re this 'house swap' .. wouldn't it just be something :-) Had a colleague who house swapped with another teacher in Lahr Germany .. (my bud is a nurse her hubby a teacher) .. they were gone a year .. Linda came back to some lovely gardens in her once vacant backyard in TBay .. the family from Germany was the recipient of Linda's sewing skills .. she had made curtains for their bedrooms and living room ..I often wonder how the gardens look now as this 'swap' took place 'eons ago' it seems .. Linda and hubby are now divorced and each remarried .. their home sold .. gosh .. sometimes life is just too darned complicated ..
So .. pushin up into second gear here .. time to get a wiggle on :-)
Enjoy your day wherever you are :-)
~M~
BRrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr BRrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr BRRrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr !!!!! The tete a tete is assembled ( minimal cursing) and we TRIED to sit outside ... well .. round about 3pm the sun went SIONARA and the temps went down .. So here I sit inside ..
DH is in a funk as he purchased a brand new Troy Built roto tiller today .. got it home .. and .. the belts are on backwards !!! (insert tete a tete cursing here) !!! Back it goes Monday. Our other Troy built trudged along for 20 years ..
I'm getting ready to put the woodstove on .. and get the shovel poised to throw snow !!!! Maybe if I put on a fire it'll ward off the snow :-)
~M~
Happy Mothers Day to all, and for the non-mothers, it's a special day for you as well, am sure you've cuddled, have taught children right from wrong, so of course, it's also your 'Mother's Day!
What a gorgeous day we had yesterday! Can take more of those..am sure today even with it being cold right now, will improve as the morning ages...
I was so thrilled with yesterday..got the gifts from my two 'swap' beautiful gardening items, can't wait to put them in their rightful place outside..
Thought I might enjoy a coffee outside, love looking at the yard..grass cut, everything look neat and tify, but I'd freeze to death AND a skunk has left its scent..not a pretty one..hope Riley (kitty who enjoys spending the ight outside and slipping inside all day-what a life) had the sense last night NOT to come near..
I got my 3 trees for the front yesterday - part of Mothers' Day gift, more goddies to come today so all and all, it's been a grand weekend..
Hope you are having much the same...
Enjoy
Good morning from Thunder Bay where the Northeast winds are becoming a force to be reckoned with this morning .. on perusing the various weather apps on my computer, I can see that my area is a 'toss up' for nasty wet weather .. whereas you folks 'down east' are gonna be a bit soggy. Happily .. the west looks a titch better than it has been.
I had the same idea as Betty re coffee al fresco .. but .. it makes me sad to have to do it in a PARKA !!! So .. I'll sit inside and enjoy the final hurrah of the woodstove, altho I do believe there was a reason DH left 2 birch logs in the wood box .. smart man :-) (AKkkk I put that in WRITING) !!!
Bought 6 50lb bags of whole corn last week for the deer .. and wouldn't ya know it .. their #s have dwindled .. which means .. I will , in all liklihood, get the Hummingbird feeders up today. Seems to be a correlation between the absence of the deer and the home coming of the Hummies :-)
Off to peruse the paper .. maybe catch an episode or 2 of Coronation St and slurp another coffee ..
HAPPY MOM'S DAY !!! Be you a Mom to a human, a finned, furried or feathered being :-)
~Marilynne~
Thought I'd move us over...
Yes 'M', temps are dropping .. thank goodness I didn't put out all those little seedings..maybe next weekend..
