Loquat Tree turning yellow

San Diego, CA

I have a young loquat tree (maybe six feet tall) that I've been growing in a container for the past year. I planted it in the ground about three weeks ago, and now the leaves are turning yellow and dropping. They seem to be yellowing from the inside of the leaf outward, since the edges are still green. Can anyone tell me why this is happening and how to combat it?

Thanks!

Sometimes plants drop their leaves in response to planting stress but usually it's not the new growth. Are all of the leaves yellowing or just the older leaves towards the center of the plant? A picture would help.

It's the older leaves toward the bottom and center of the plant. I don't know how to post a picture, but it looks just like the one posted here:

I wouldn't worry too much about it because it sounds like mild transplant shock. As long as the leaf-drop doesn't progress towards the tips of the branches it should be fine. I would use a root stimulator to help get it settled into it's new home (but don't fertilize it!) Espoma has a new powdered root stimulator with mycorrhizae that sounds awesome http://www.espoma.com/content.aspx?type=p&id=37&intCategoryID=2

Thanks, Plantfreak! I gave it some root stimulator a few days ago and I'm giving it regular water. The leaves are still yellowing, but it still seems to be putting out new growth, so I'm hoping for the best.

New growth is usually a good sign so keep your hopes up.
