I have some native fish in my watergarden, I think they are Blue Gills. Anyways there has been some hanky-panky going on today in one of the water-lily pots. Keep your fingers crossed! LOL

Great frog, fish and pond shots everyone! I just love looking at this thread :-). Bedouin, congrats on your tadpoles, and ladygardener, I hope that was some fruitful fish hanky-panky. I have some tadpoles in a small aquarium, and the first one turned into a little froglet the other night. I’ve never seen a frog this tiny and cute…I think I’m in love lol.

Here he is with the remainder of his tail still visible:

This guy is hard to see, which should give you some idea why we don't get many pictures! DH caught this one while he was doing some work on the pond and brought it to the house so I could see him. He's just a little bigger than the tip of my thumb. Has a big voice, though! :-)

Would yall be interested in an article on how to raise taddies for your garden?

Deer Park, IL(Zone 5b)

crimson. I would like taddie info

Crossville, TN(Zone 7a)

K, I'll get started on it right after I finish up these last two. Thanks!

My big guy came out for a bit this afternoon to catch about 20 mins of sun before it got cloudy again. I was on the porch sorting some daylillies and I heard this really deep gutteral "ribit..ribit ribit". Man ...he has a deep voice. Lou Rawls of the frog community...Took me a minute to realize it was coming from the frog..

Last summer we had this snapping turtle staying in our stream that goes to our pond. He was only there a week or so.

this is the stream where the turtle was. The frogs hang out there a lot to. Especially the tiny ones.

You can see where the stream falls into the pond to back of this picture. The frogs hang out at the top of the falls and jump in the pond if they are startled. The fish hang out under the falls to catch bugs etc. that come down. The birds love to take their baths in the stream.

Beautiful pond & stream ! Where did the snapping turtle come from?

Edelstein, IL

Thanks. DH has done it all on his own by hand. We live in a tiny community in the country. We had spent years trying to fill in the old town well on our property. Then 10 years ago DH decided to climb down into it and clean it out. He has a regular sump pump in it that pumps water to the upper bowl (I'll see if I have any pictures of that part) Then it comes down the stream to the lower falls into the pond. On the other side of the pond there is the drain tile that takes the water to a filter bed and back into the well. We never have drained it and completely cleaned it out in the 10 years it had been in. Some of the original fish that were put in to keeps bugs down until he got the system running are still there and tons of them were hatched out in the pond or the filter bed. The only koi left(we lost them all one spring) was hatched out in the filter bed and is getting way to big for the pond.
We don't know where the turtle came from. There is a creek about a mile away from here and a stream about 1 mile the other way so maybe he was just passing through. In this picture you can see the bowl and upper falls in the back.

I dont know if I should get jealous or clap lol. That's beautiful KDM! Inspiration for me to get off my bum and make one for us. Yall be interested in an article on how to set up a stream?

It really is beautiful and you are both justified to be proud of it. I love the boy with the fishing pole. :-)

This is my dog Amy-My husband just had a yell at her for being in the pond. She was soaked all the way except the head. Usually only her feet and legs get wet. She hadn't been in the pond for nearly a week. I thought she was cured . . .

beahive, your frog is gorgeous!
kdm, your photos are wonderfully peaceful! Is your stream concrete based? Hard to tell from the photos! If it's lined, what type of liner did you use (flexible rubber)?. It looks as though there are no folds in it; it appears to hug the foundation showing all the forms beneath it. Did you place a matting beneath the lining if that is what it is? Just noticed the snapping turtle! Gorgeous colours on your fish.

Does anyone know how to tell a frog from a toad when adults?
Crimsontsavo, are you posing info on tadpole rearing? Would be interested in reading it! Also how to set up a stream info.

Edelstein, IL

Bedouin, Thanks. The stream was dug by hand (DH) and he used a liner that was given to him. They said it was used at that time(10 years ago) to put under asphalt roads. It is a stiff plastic. He laid it out in the hot sun to make it more flexible and then laid it right on the dirt. The pond liner is a regular pond liner over several layers of wet newspaper. Wish we would have had a digital camera then to show all he did from start to finish. It was a lot of hard, hot work and he was still working full time then. We really do enjoy it though.

Linda, Your dog Amy is so cute! Next time she is in the pond ..take a picture. Would love to see her back stroke!

I'm real sad, apparently my dog Amy did hurt/kill one of the fish last night. I found a white butterfly (one of my friendliest of course) in the skimmer with a tooth puncture wound in it's belly). Breaks my heart!

these were visitors just passing thru at the end of april...Not native Texans, someone told me they were called something like........ red billed whistling ducks? They were very attractive and not at all afraid of humans. They stayed around, swimming the ponds and walking the meadows for nearly a week before traveling on.
