Gorgeous!

Found this little guy stuck down a vent well at my house this AM.
He was so happy to be brought to wetter ground. I held him for a while and he kinda played dead. Every once in a while he would open his eyes to see if I was still around. Gosh he was pretty & so cute!

Jackieshar - I'm curious about the snake/fish pic. What was the size of the fish? We have a largish pond (not nearly as large as yours) and have had a number of good size snakes move through. I wondered how big a fish a snake would go after. Most of our koi are in the 18-24" range but I do have a couple babies I kept from last year that are only 4-6" right now. I had been worrying about the heron but did not consider the snakes.

Your pond is very natural and beautiful.

Here'a pic of my little baby that I got today. I'm letting them stay. They aren't so noisy anymore. LOL

This guy has been here for a few years. He hibernates behind the waterfall all winter. Can't get anyone to relocate him. DH keeps saying that it's more afraid of me, than I am of him. As long as I know where he is I'm ok. It's when the snake suprises me that does me in.

Julie,
If you have snakes they can swallow a pretty good sized fish. I would think that the larger 18 to 24 would be plenty safe..I have seen Herons with a fish in their mouth that they couldn't lift and it would nearly drown them and still they would not turn loose.
edited to say, that sounded like a gross exageration...I should have been more clear.........the heron could not fly with the large fish, he struggled with the fish flopping as I watched, but he managed to drag him out of the water onto the bank for a tasty snack, fish still flopping

What a snake! If I happened upon him I'd wet myself! I had tiny black snakes last year that I caught in a net and relocated to a lake, but nothing like that one. Your friend does have beautiful markings. Have you named him yet?

Kansasville, WI(Zone 5a)

LOL He is known as "that goll darn snake". We put the few veggies we grow behind the pond and he takes care of the bugs in there. He's so big, he's easy to see, and he stays out of the water.

Fort Lauderdale, FL(Zone 10b)

I'd run a mile if I saw that snake! Is it a nice, non poisonous garden snake? Nice to have it as a bug catcher! Attractive colouring as well.

Columbia, MO(Zone 5b)

Looks like a garter snake. One of the best friends your garden can have. I am with you on the snake thing though. 150 pound angry rottweiler -- no problem, 10 ounce unknown snake -- I'm outta here!

Dallas, OR(Zone 8a)

Great pictures all. The snake would have me packing also. They have their place and are good for the food chain..but not in my back yard please. No critter shots today but have my first water lily of the season.

It's just a garter snake. If something happens to this one, I know another would just come along and take its place.

That Koi is bigger than your pup. Wow! How old is the Koi?

Beahive, The pup and the Koi are both 2 yrs old(3rd summer for both). We lost all of our koi a couple years ago but D.H. found this one as a very little guy that went through the drain to the filter bed. It is strange cause altho all of our fish spawn a lot and we get lots of babies, this is the only baby koi that has ever showed up. We have fan tails and gold fish and the regular gold fish multiply like crazy. Every year we give a lot away as we get to many. If any one is close and need some let us know. The koi is going to be to big for our pond so it is up for grabs also. We may have to take it to a lake or the river. We will stick to gold fish etc. from now on as the koi just grow to fast.

Dallas, OR(Zone 8a)

That is amazing. How long is he? Your dog is a Chihuahua I think. I have two Chi's myself and that fish appears to be bigger than your pup. What are ya feeding it? Mine have doubled in size their first year. Now about 8". I can't imagine 13- 16" fish in my 3200 gal pond next summer. Wow!
12 of 13 of my fish.. 1 hiding at photo time.

Beahive, The Koi is probably around 28", over 2ft at least. We get regular field floating pond food at Tractor Supply. They just get fed once a day but they get a lot of bugs etc. from the pond. It is much bigger than the dog.
Actually "Itzy Bitzy" is 1/2 Jack Russell and 1/2 Toy Fox Terrier. Every one thinks she is a Chi tho. We researched it after we got her and the Chi is one of the breeds they used to down size from the full size Fox Terriers. Think she does have a lot of Chi traits.
Your fish are really pretty. You'll really enjoy them.

Hi all, I'm back from my trip and have a few "pond" pics for you all. First I wanted to say what wonderful pictures you have been posting while I was away. Jackieshar what a wonderful pond you have and such interesting and scary animals you have hanging out at it.
kdm, LOL that pup had better watch out.
Mothermole, Poor Amy she just wants to have a little fun.
I've just come back from the Carolina's both North and South. We were camping at Huntington Beach State Park, S.C. for close to 2 weeks. If you like the beach and an have an adventurous nature you would love it there. The "pond" is a rather big freshwater lake on one side of a causeway and a salt marsh on the other side. Here is one of the local residents.

That is a great picture. I've been trying to get a clear dragonfly pic for my profile (my name is french for dragonfly). I had trouble today because the dogs kept running under foot and scaring them away.
There are so many, I'll get it :)

OK, I know this is really pushing the "pond life" but it really is the BIGGEST Pond. Wild ponies on Shackleford Island.

And back home to my own little pond and my cute little frogs.
I'm going to do a group of pictures of the birds I saw on my trip and post them on the bird watching forum. I'll post a link to the thread when I get it done. If any of you are interested. Also I will be putting together some pictures of Brookgreen Gardens and will post a link to that as well.

HollyAnn, Welcome home! Thanks for starting this thread, as you can see it has been very active and I for one check it out every day. Can't wait to see your pics of Brookgreen Gardens, I toured it about 10 years ago and loved it. Sorry you could not join our Longwood Garden group, now that place took your breath away. Here is a link for you and others sharing pond pictures here to enjoy, in the group pic, I'm the short one in blue jacket hold hat in middle. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/850074/

Here is a picture of my frog prince. Or should I say King as all my other large frogs took off after an early spring shower, Went for 7 frogs total down to 1 large and 2 small. Guess I need to keep them on a leash. LOL

Thanks BeaHive, That fairy was a Christmas present from my daughter a few seasons back, She is the "Fairy of Lost Things" a George Carruth creation. I'll post his site but deny any wrong doing if any of you get into trouble. There are a few pieces I'd love to own.
