My Chick's pics...

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

Sure look forward to having a website someday, so i can show off pics like SilkieChick's... Meanwhile, i hope this doesn't take too long loading the thread.... hmmm, i will start with a pic of my current favorite, the Jersey Giant [Black] from the April 7th hatch. He has a light colored beak with a spot on one side, hence the name FRECKLE...

while i was taking updated pics of the asstd bantams from the next brooder, he seemed curious or jealous and flew over to see why i wasn't paying attention to him... so i tried to be a good chickenMama and read him a book ^_^

Here are his hatchmates... Group one... i think pullets...

Group two, roos...? OK, at less than 2 weeks old it is too soon to tell. I need to be getting some numbered bands in, since these will soon feather out and i won't be able to tell them apart...

they were relaly NOT cooperating withtheir photo shoot!

their feathers are reall heavy on theirs thighs, i hope this isn't ":vulture hocks"

you can see why i am wondering if they are considered blue. they don't have lacing... but the strip down the middle is black and the rest is sorta luminescent. which may just be because of the type feathering.... they are REALLY fluffy, but less fluffy than the other colors...

they were just having too much fun jumping around on Sam! gives you an idea of their size...

here's a good head shot... time to run to Borger, buy water for the chicks etc... rain barrel is getting low, and they don't drink city water, YUCK!

I love the pics of chicks. Soooo cute! One looks like a little penguin!

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

i had one named penguin, he didn't make it. i will post his pic too....

hmmm, will have to make a pic from the video i took of him. he is on the far right, the dark black one in this pic... he wasn't able to stand and started using his wings to scoot around on his belly, like a penguin! he would scoot over to the water when he was thristy, and call out for me to help him. he ate pretty good too... but it took all his stength to finally stand up one day, and then he passed on...

those chicks above were from my original flock [see pic farther down the thread] mostly what i am hatching is from them and from my Jersey Giant/Black Australorp flock. obviously i purchased all the bantams from Welp through our feed store, and had one hatch from shipped eggs, a self blue OEG. His name has been changed [my son does that] from Mr. Purple to Mr. Silver. But i still call him 'Bob'...

here is Bob at three weeks with Freckle on day two...

this little guy from April 8 hatch didn't make it. he was splayed and had crippled toes. i tried to help with a splint, and he had a tremendous will to live. he just coudln't get around much and didn't grow a lot before he passed. but we made him comforatble.

the hatch drug out over two days, and he was the last one. so there was too much humidity variation in my little hovabator. this next time the eggs will be separated by breed and hopefully there will be no problems resulitng...

i really didn't know what these were when i got them, they were white looking with slate legs, but too big for OEG.... and now they aren't quite buff, maybe porcelain.... clean legged.... any guesses? hopefully we have a trio with only one male... they feathered out fast and are good fliers...

very cute! Sorry to hear about penguin. Was that recently? That must have been hard. You get so attached to these guys! I have lost four chickens in the 2 years I have had them. 2 were to our yellow lab when she got off her run on 2 occassions. She was about 7mos old then, and I think she prob. thought they were toys unfortuneately. That was very hard, I cried and cried! Then I have lost 2 on separate occasions that I found dead in the coop, looking like they were just asleep. I have no idea what happened to each of these hens, but chalked it up to just like all living things, some have genetic, heart issues, ect. Thankfully everyone else is healthy and loving the warm weather back again. This is a pic of our current chicken pen. We will be modifying it this summer so that the dog can be back in a pen again. (not with the chickens of course!

what a beautiful group! when the dog goes back in, do the chickens free range, or do you have another coop built for them?

Walpole, NH

We are planning on shortening the dog pen a little. The chickens will still be in the under part, but the dog wont have access to that. We will build another door to go outside of the under part and I will put up a 4 food fence on the other half of our yard. Its a nice green plushy area thats nicely shaded. They should be able to go in or out of the new fenced area if they want, and it will also protect them hopefully from predators or any dogs that may decide to visit our yard. There are a couple of dogs that live around us, but knock on wood, never had a problem with them. What kind of chick was that in the last pic?

Conroe, TX

Beautiful, beautiful. beautiful. oh and did I mention beautiful!
I think my favorite is the one of Bob and Freckle. So cute.

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

thank you ^_^

i don't know what the last chick is, it is a closeup of the trio i don't know. they are bigger than OEGs, so i thought Japanese Bantams, but i dont' think they com ein this color.... and i don't knohow to describe the colore...

so, any ideas?

Woodsville, NH

those bantams were all from Welp Hatchery!

here is a recent shot of our own large fowl [except Bob, far left] hatches...
[PICTURE MISSING WILL POST LATER IN THREAD]

the Giants look funny, they are slow to feather in, but grow huge and gangly frames.

the blurry black one in the front is from a SQ Brown Leghorn hen and our Black Jersey Giant rooster. I am hoping all of the JG crosses are pullets ^_^

the two fluffy feathered ones with yellow legs are my Buckeyes. Applesauce is from AppleXBest and MorningGlory is PurplePetuniaXBest. "MG" is a roo. that is a GOOD thing, since we only have one mature roo and one up and coming cockerel...

if you can see WAYYYYY down under the cage in the left corner, i have , no HAD a nest of chicken eggs growing there, and in front of it a nest of duck eggs. a couple of hens have acted broody, but they kept sharing the laying until yesterday. Now it seems Pansy has moved all but two of the chicken eggs over witht he duck egg, and is sitting on ALL. there must be 30 eggs total!!! and i am pretty sure the duck eggs are not fertile...

so cross your fingers for Pansy! she is not SQ, but she will be a good MamaChicken!

I refered to this pic previously but didn't post it... these are my original hens from 2006, what is left of them. 8 RC Brown Leghorns and 7 Buckeyes. about 3 SQ of each. i get about 5 eggs a day from them. they have had a hard life and live on full shcolarship in the hen house!

also in there is one of our OEG Blue Wheatens, right in front of the Buckeye with the Buff chest feathers [Blondie]

the kids will go to their first ever Bantam show in Amarillo in two weekends to show the two BW hens...

Im glad your hens are on full scolarship! I have thought the same thing about my chickens. Alot of my hens will be 2 years old this spring as well. I'm so attached to them, I dont think I will be able to do anything but the same! So I will take what eggs I can get!! How old are your kids TF? The show they are doing, is it part of a 4H club? My daughter is 8, I have thought of having her join 4H and do some things with the chickens. I have to look into it a little more. Well, have to get dressed and on with day! It will take us a little time to drive over to the coast. Kids are pretty excited about going to the beach. Should be a good day. Have a great day yourselves! -Jaime

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

Jamie, our 4-H doesn't do any show poultry stuff. we joined the Amarillo Bantam Club. you should look into Poultry clubs in your area, they relaly love having kids join. it was a whopping 5 bucks for our whole fmaily for a year. and it will cost 2.50 per entry for the Spring Lawn Show. mostly a learning experience and a luncheon get together, combined with club meeting. should be a ton of fun, as most poulty people are! My kids are 9 and 6 and 1. we only have two adult bantams to show. but in the fall the bantam club hosts the fair show, so we can show our large fowl then, and our new bantams will be old enough for testing and showing... it's a nice reward for the kids to get to show off for all the daily chores they sometimes help me with LOL

have a great time! take a camera, and let's see pics wehn you get back. so glad you were one of Lora's crazies, it is nice to have you aboard!

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

bumping up for truest to look at cochin bantams, blue or black?
