My Chick's pics...

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

almost our newest "chic" wanted her "pic" in here... hatched Saturday were two muscovies, in the incubator. they were under the broody hens... Olive, the duck-hen, is on a nest with duck and chicken eggs, so i have water there for the babies and take them greens to munch on...

Aren't they the most pitiful, though adorable
things when they first hatch? I think Buck is
just precious- however in the world do you keep
them all straight?

Lodi, United States

Now THAT is a cute newly hatched chick!

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

thanks. Pokey didn't make it, he died yesterday. And Boom Box died this morning. ;-(

truest, i ordered leg bands, and have a list, putting them on EVERY chicken eventually...

Johnson City, TX(Zone 8b)

I think DH is going to pick up some colored
zip ties this week- I have 2 hatching baskets,
and will be patient while he makes 3 more. He
just loves doing little do-dads for me, and I am
a lucky girl. Look what the quail have given us
in the last 3 days!

Sorry about Boom Box and Pokey. What was the
problem with them? Were they a bit slow to hatch?

Johnson City, TX(Zone 8b)

And look at this egg. This is the background color
on a lot of eggs, before it goes thru the paint tunnel-
Someone forgot to load her paint gun! You could
squish the side in like a ping pong ball, too.

cool eggs, looks like you have them in one of those mini muffin containers from the deli?

that may be her first egg, so she wasn't fully loaded yet LOL

Pokey was two days late. and just very slow getting around. he would be better, then worse. the others were more than ten days older, so i put him in a separate place. even gave him sugar water. he just gave up.

Boom Box was in an incubator that got up to the lethal temp. only three hatched from there, none survived. he had me convinced he would live, just be noisy all his life. if he was in any kind of pain, he isn't now... that was the first and only from my own OEGs. now i have nine eggs in the bator from them, and ten duck eggs!

i promised DH i would stop, but i had to rescue the abandoned duck eggs, so why not finish filling the bator with OEG eggs, makes sense, right? i even tossed in three leghone eggs, don't know if they are fertile or by who, but we will see. i have dearly loved EVERY cross i have gotten from thos ewhite egg layers!

Johnson City, TX(Zone 8b)

Poor Boom Box and Pokey. Ya gotta love a
gal that never gives up- I hope the duck and
OEG's hatch well for you.

That's a quail egg carton. I haven't bought any
myself yet, looks like I can get them for about
28 cents. I can't remember. This carton came
loaded with my first attempt at hatching quail.
That sure was a disappointment. Out of 24 eggs,
of those that weren't broken (broken ones that came
wrapped in TP) I hatched 4. One was cracked in
this carton, and the only packing was newspaper.
When I do start shipping eggs, I'm going to use
the pop-out egg foam, and may modify that with
some damp wood chips for moisture.

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

thanks, truest.

damp wood chips have been highly recommended. i have shipped that way twice with excellent results!

naughty chicks are running everywhere today! later i will start a thread just on the chicks that the hens have...

I got to watch a quail hatch an egg yesterday
evening. 4 or 5 females crowded around her
like they were midwives, and when done she let
out a long whistle like a bomb dropping. She laid
the egg on the left- and it feels like Sandpaper!
Must have been one of her first...

awesome! had me going at first, when you said "hatch", i was thinking, now surely she hasn't had the quail long enough to lay AND hatch. but i guess when you push an egg out your rumpess, it feels like hatching LOL

today is Peter's birthday, he was "hatched" seven years ago!

i am not feeling young ^_^

(Audrey) Dyersburg, TN(Zone 7a)

We had a bantam pair and she was having a hard "labor". He was on the ground with her talking her through it and squawking a lot. It was a big egg for her, I didn't think she was going to be able to do it, but with his encouragement, she laid it on the line!

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

LOL, ;you put that so well!

Luther, MI(Zone 4b)

TF, tell Peter a belated "Happy Birthday" from me. I couldn't post very much yesterday. I had to change my anti-virus and had some problems with AVG-free. They now have an anti-spyware with their anti-virus and it slowed down my computer something awful. I finally took it off and installed Avast free anti-virus late last nite.

Johnson City, TX(Zone 8b)

Oh, yes, I meant laid and egg, not hatched! LOL

Happy Happy belated Birthday to Peter. My son
turned 30 last December. That really put the years
in my face! Seems just like yesterday he was my
'Baby Chris'.

I made a 12 quail egg omelet yesterday- Wow is all
I can say- it was great! I normally make a 2 jumbo
egg omelet, and it took that many to equal that.

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

LOL at U2...

will do...

this is the last pic i can find of Buck.... the only brownish chick in the picture.

That's a great pic of all of them together. Looks
like the mama hens took their job to heart. Go hens!

They are looking great, and happy, TF. I just
love to watch mine dust bathe, it's the high
point of their day (if you don't include treats
and eats).

hi
here is a picture of our only chick out of 8 egg
been in incabator 21 day
we can not get the egg to stand up
any one got idea
we had one that could not get out of egg

Your chick looks great, Elles. Often, if the
humidity is too low, it can make it hard for a chick
to get out of the shell. If the temp is low, the
chicks may take a day longer to hatch.
I got a really inexpensive thermo/hygro at WM to
monitor my humidity. The inc. RH should be 60%
and the hatching s/b 70% for chickens.

Humansville, MO

we got that
we think we do not have them standing up right
how do you get them to stand up on the point size
is it all right for them to lay down
elle

Johnson City, TX(Zone 8b)

Laying on their side is quite ok, Elle. As long
as they tend toward the small end down. Are
you turning them 3-4 times a day?

Lodi, United States

It is fine if they are lying down--as long as the large end is slightly elevated, which it will be on a flat surface. I have been using egg cartons to hold my eggs for hatching. That way the large end is straight up. I'm not sure this is necessary since hens do not use egg cartons and their eggs have much better hatch rate than mine:0). During the last three days you do not want to move the eggs at all since the chick is orienting itself relative to the air cell which it needs to break into in order to hatch. So I would let this hatch go the way it is set up and try an egg carton in the future if it would make you feel better to see the big end more elevated. I also drape my hatcher and egg cartons with cheese cloth before I put the eggs in--it makes it easier to clean up the egg and hatch debries. Good luck ellesgh!

Johnson City, TX(Zone 8b)

Oh- thanks Cat, forgot about the last 3 days.
Your others may still hatch at day 22 or 23, Elle.
I would love to see your little chickie with some
buddies to keep him company.

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

elle, you rhatch may straggle a bit. you can leave him in for 24-48 hours, and his peeping can help the others out... give them more time... if rH is too low, put some warm water in a spray bottle to boost it up, then just keep it colsed and wait some more... good luck!

Humansville, MO

thank-you all
i put some water in for the chick
huband is making a broomer
? about spelling for the chick
if we do not get more we will buy some
elle

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

you can start him on cooked egg yolks.... it may be a day or two before he thinks he has to eat or drink, so don't e surprised if he just lies around. coming out of an egg is an all-too-tiring experience [it would seem], and some of mine have enough yolk in their abdomen to just sleep for two to three days!

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

just bumping this back up, there are plenty of pictures of our self blue chick here. he is since gone and we miss him. glad we still have Annie and Alvin, and all three blue cochins!

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)
