Ruby-throated Hummingbirds- # 2
GM...congrats on the new camera!!
Good idea on the feeder thread Pelle...I have several different kinds and will take pics today of them!
got one started here http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/841893/
Here is a link to Drs. Foster and Smith's site. They have loads of need feeders. I got my hummZinger from them. I like the fact that it has a built-in ant moat!
Duncraft.com has a great selection of birds feeders.
Nice pic of the Wing Wave, dell! So do HBs do that just like the bluebirds? Are they flirting when they WW?
And does anyone know--Will Hummingbirds pick up threads and pet hair for their nests if you put it out on a bush for them?
I would like them to nest here, too.
And I forget, what kinds of trees do they like to nest in...? Any experience with that? Maybe I can plant one quick!
thanks for any tips. t.
From the site Hummingbird Nests:
The typical hummingbird nest is tiny, about the size of half an English walnut shell. The outer part is covered with moss and plant fibers. Sometimes it is shingled with lichens. The rest is made of plant down and spider webs.
Heres a good pic of one.

Hi T, From what I've been reading they nest in everything from shrubs to lower branches on trees.
From that last link w/ the pic you can really see how tiny the nest is; its no wonder so many people don't ever see it.
Rose, is that hummer trying to warn you of something (is it B-Tornado or A-Tornado)? Or pointing the way to the feeders for the other hummingbirds?
Thanks for the links. Very interesting. Did you read in the article that the female hummingbird might feed 1 1/2 kilometers from her nest?
How far is that in miles? Is it as far as I think?!
I don't know why that Hummer was waving like that. He really went thru all kinds of motions I hadn't seen before and I think he was feeling threatened or was trying to attract the little female. Too bad all the pics I snapped off didn't turn out as it was amazing to watch him! Oh well, maybe next time!
Tab...l 1/2 kilometers would equal almost a mile...that is sure a long way to travel. I wonder if they always nest away from their feeding area? I just can't imagine that little bird flying so far!
I will be starting a new thread for the RT Hummers and will return with a link! I hope you all join me there with your pics!
Here is the new thread everyone http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/843035/
