Toad Lily - Good for indoors?

Boston, MA

Hi Everyone,

I am a new user at Dave's and find it is a great resource!

For most of my waking hours I am trapped in an office with only fluorescent lights as I am pretty far from the windows. I have been building my indoor cubicle with shade tolerant plants and so far have several pothos (clippings from other plants, one is potted, other two rooting in water), a little rubber plant, a peace lily and now a parlor palm. Oh and an axolotl hangs out too!

All nice, but all very green... so I am looking to add a little color.

After some research, I started to look into shade gardening. Out of the various shade plants, I find the toad lily (Tricyrtis) really beautiful, but I am not sure if it can be grown in such conditions. I heard that the "Imperial Banner" toad lily does well in containers, but will it do OK indoors under these conditions?

Any other suggestions for my cube?

Thanks!

I can't answer the first question but I can the second. I grow Iresine indoors. It's a lovely red color. Coleus does well indoors, too. LOTS of variation of foiliage there.

Here's my coleus just coming into color. There a many others that have more reds and yellow/golds.

I doubt the Toad Lily would do well indoors.
It's a hardy perennial that dies back during winter and re-grows in spring - it needs the dormant/cold period.

Have you tried any Marantas?

PS...what does this mean? "Oh and an axolotl hangs out too!" (Ü)

I have started my toad lily indoors - it seems to love being on a direct sun windowsill. If it keeps doing this good I may just keep it inside to enjoy - I will update with pictures n such - right now its still a baby, about 3 inches tall-

Tell us about the axolotl. Does it live in an aquarium?
