All the rest I'll show have been grown only in natural light also. This one I was told was an oldie but goody. The lady I bought my first leaves from said several I got were older classic violets???

Blue Lace has a big beautiful bloom!

Lin I keep growing more and more babies from grandmas plants in order to share them with other family members to enjoy. Just as they were shared with me! It is very nice to think of grandma's plants living on this way! The third one of hers I'm growing has yet to bloom but is supposed to be a pretty burgundy, maybe mixed with white. Can't wait for it to bloom too! :))

Here is Sora's Virgina Rose and it really does look like a rose to me!

I like Blue Lace a lot. All are really stunning! And, the form of Sora's Virginia Rose blossom really does look like a rose!

(Zone 1)

Wow! Brenda, your plants are just so beautiful ... they all look so healthy and those leaves are so shiny. I am so envious of the perfection! They must like your Idaho conditions!

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

Very pretty Brenda and I love the story behind them.
SO nice to hear you grow in windows as I'm really hoping to grow mine in windows too so that I can keep my stand as a propagating stand and not have to have "permanent" residents on it *lol*
Can I ask you Brenda, what kind of light do your windows get? Just bright light or sun too? Mine get just bright light but no direct sun.
I do have windows where they could get direct sun but I think I would need to purchase some sheers or something for them.

Thank you,
Kim

Brenda, we must think alike. First of all I have Playful Spectrum as a plantlet I grew from leaf and I have several Blue Lace as babies from leaf. I just saw your Sora Virginia Rose (or whatever her name is and she is magnificent.......I have a baby of her, too from leaves)

i agree with you totally about the older violets. There is a lady only 70 miles from here who grows lots of older varieties and I can't wait until I get to go on the 25th of this month to buy her plants. She also sells leaves and her site I believe is...........just google Jo's Violets and you can find her.

The reason these older plants haven't gotten lost is because they are easier to grow I think. (The business about hybridizers close to your location was just told to me.......i don't know) I do know that I like the older plants better and find them easier to grow.

Now that you have shown Blue Lace and Playful Spectrum I can't wait until they get big enough to bloom. I am having trouble getting your precious Silverglades Oyster plants to bloom at all. They keep growing bigger and bigger but no buds.

Here is one of Jo's oldies but goodies that is at least 13" across. I have emailed Jo to try and find out her name...

Can't believe it took me so long to see this thread....I have learned so much from everyone here on growing ..Most importantly..never give up!! ...on the other hand thru trial and mostly error on my part that certain gessies I am beginning to think..are best suited for other people..lol..like episcias for example..I can take a gorgeous potfull and turn them to scraggly dried out mess before you can say boo..well maybe not that fast but you get my point..yet others can grow them so wonderfully.Thats what I love about this group....av's and gessies I can't necessarily grow well myself..I can still admire from afar and never quit trying because others here in the garden can grow them so well and are so eager to help with growing tips and tricks.....Great growing everyone! I am loving all the photos^_^

Oh my goodness ... how could anyone NOT like Rebel's Rosebuds??? That is Gorgeous! Lucky you ... I would dumpster dive or trash can dive for one like that too! Now ... me keeping it alive for long is another question!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Ooooh, I like that Rebel's Rosebud. I have been looking at the Violet Gallery site and just drooling ..............no wonder you liked Berry Splash, Lin. It is listed as a vintage african violet on the Violet Gallery site.

I have a new camera and am learning how to use it.........just got it today from the computer guy. Let me try a new picture of Berry Splash just for Lin.

WOW! Oh yes ... That is one very beautiful Berry Splash!

What kind of camera did you get Gail ... sure takes nice pic's!

Gail That is such a true color of the flower I am having a hard time tying to get the right color of the flower I guess I just have to keep trying

Now I am going to try and retake the african violet posted several posts back and see the difference. (I am like a little kid with a new toy, but all I can do is just use auto)

Please just let me be obnoxious for just a few photos with my new camera......some are better than others.....some pics look better than my plants do. And this thing is on auto.........

Dimmer, it is not your fault that you can't get the right color.......this is a Nikon D40 and the computer tech found it on sale on some site I have never heard of or I would have never gotten it.

Look at the difference in this pic and the same plant about 6 posts up.

Hi everyone! Great pictures

Gail,I can't beleive how big the sinningia have gotten. They must like living in the big state of texas!I think you have the AV's labeled right. The one you sent to me (Pink Patches) has the same bloom and looks just like the picture from the violet society.I just lost the pink in the leaves.I was reading a old gessie book and it said that people living in the southern states often loss the pink in the leaves.Or it could be from over fertilizing.Whatever it is I love it.Name or no name.LOL.Your new camera takes excellent pictures. And those wasp leaves with the babys sure grew fast!

Kim,thats a nice bunch of AV's your growing!

Brenda,lovely AV's.Blue lace is awesome!

Bonnie,Thats a beautiful AV. I love the leaves.I wish I could find a plant like that in a garbage can.LOL.

(Zone 1)

Wow! Gail, I am loving your new camera! Man, your plants always look so good and now with that new camera they look even better! I have a digital Canon Camera and it's always on auto too since I can't figure out anything else to do with it ... and my pic's come out looking like they are from an old brownie camera. Nicon D40? I gotta write that down.

.... hmm, ^_^ wonder if my camera could accidentally fall in the pool or something so I could have hubby get me a new one? LOL. He just bought this Canon one for me a couple of months ago so I guess any accidents better wait awhile longer. I am going to remember that Nicon D40!

Great photo's!!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I knew I could get you on line if you knew your babies were posted! (LOL)
We miss you, Jan and need your input for growing these babies as you do it so well. Post your Pink Patches you sent to me. She is gorgeous!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Lin, I don't have the fancy stuff that you can get with this camera! I have just the basics but that is all I need .

I just noticed how many gorgeous avs Brenda posted and they grow in her window sill. They wouldn't have a chance at my house in the natural light.

Andalusia, AL(Zone 8b)

Hi there Gail,I'll be back online more often but right now theres bad storms and tornatos heading my way so I don't no how long I'll be on here tonight.

Pink Patches is alittle off wack after I dropped her on the floor.LOL.I put the broken leaves in soil maybe a baby will have the pink in the leaves.

Beautiful pics you all. Brenda, I think it's special how you are passing your grandma's "babies" around to your family. I try to do that also. Gail, your pictures are so pretty too. Have fun shopping at Jo's.

Gail your new camera pics look professional..I think I need to get something like that...my photos are always so drab...You go ahead and post all the pics you want my dear..they always brighten our day!

Brenda love all the older av's you grow and..I have a few passed down to me from my grandma and aunts..and i agree they are so much heartier than the newer ones....yours are absolutely amazing!

Mrsbonnie..I wish i could find a beauty like that rebel's rosebuds in my friends garbage...beautiful plant!

Really enjoying everyones pics : )

Mid, ID(Zone 3b)

Nancy we are the same with the episcias!! The ones I have left are long and straggly looking . I've got some nice blooms on a couple right now but the plants themselves are sad looking. I won't be getting more! They deserve better! :))

I am with Dimmer in that so few of my pictures ever show what the plants or blooms really look like! That being said I am going to start saving right this minute for that Nikon D40!! Gail those pictures are absolutely gorgeous in their true color and clarity! I thought I'd have to get all fancy with lenses and learning photography to ever get such great pictures but to think there is a camera out there that can do that on auto?? I've wanted a camera that would do the macro shots forever too! I'm drooling!

Hey Kim! My windows get some direct sunshine, one in the early morning, and the other in the late afternoon. In the summer I do have to put a sheer curtain up between my AV's and the late afternoon sun. But most of the time they are just bright windows. I'm sure my AV's don't bloom as often as if they were on light stands but I'm happy enough with them!

Lin and Jannich if I had Gail's camera I could show you how truly beautiful Blue Lace really is! And the others too! LOL

Laura I'm big on what I call "heirloom" plants. Glad you are too! :))

I can't leave off without a picture. No close ups but I do grow my semi mini AV's under a grow light here in my office and they have been blooming abundantly lately! It's nice to walk in here each morning and see them.

Nancy I think Gail's comments about her difficulty with Silverglade Oysters proves the point about the heartiness of the older plants!!

My mother plant of Silverglade Oysters now blooms fairly regularly but I have had the devil of a time raising any babies. The ones I finally did get are light years away from blooming at this point. And I started them before that pink and white violet of my grandma's!

I remember seeing some pictures of your blooms in the past and you have some awesome violets yourself!! You should post a few here. Wasn't it you with Concord? I loved that violet!

This is strep Charlotte from a week or so ago. She has been gorgeous this spring and the light coming in from the window helped me get a decent picture.

Now Brenda ... I don't know what kind of camera you have but it sure takes wonderful photo's in my opinion! I think a lot of these great photo's must have something to do with the person behind the lens. My digital camera has the automatic setting too but I can take (I'm not exaggerating here) 50 pictures and maybe, get one that is just okay! Really! I just want a camera for dummies where you just point and shoot and the pic comes out "beautiful" and "perfect" no matter what the subject! I need someone to invent a special camera especially for me that I can just point at something and tell it to take a clear photo! I am always amazed and very happy if I can get a picture that is clear! LOL.

(Zone 1)

Brenda, those semi mini's are really great ... pretty colors! I bet it is nice going into your office and seeing them sitting there ... makes working so much more enjoyable! Strep Charlotte is really lovely ... so many blooms on one plant!

South, TX

I am loving all of the pictures!

I used to grow violets, I am glad I am doing it again. I love to learn new things and I have learned a lot. My violets from other areas do fine. They stay cool inside and they really love the big lights. They like my new lights more than the smaller ones in the sunroom. The sunroom has natural light too, so I thought it would be fine. I am happy that they like the new shelves.

I guess light, soil and fert. have been great things to learn about. The friends I have made are a great thing too!
