Bare root plants quickly dying

Trabuco Canyon, CA(Zone 10a)

I was given two bare root roses. They were wrapped in plastic and the roots were surrounded by moist sawdust. They had already started to grow and had several new stems of about 24 inches growing with leaves on them. I couldn't plant them right away so I put them in water for two days before I planted them. I planted them just as the directions on the plastic bag said. I watered them good and they are in a sunny area of my garden. Now only four days later all the leaves and stems that had grown so well are dying off. The leaves wilted first, dried up and fell off. Now the stems are slowly drying up and turning black. Will the rose bushes recover from this? What happened in the first place to make this happen?

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

My guess would be transplant shock. I don't know where Trabuco Canyon is but based on your zone I would guess southern CA, and I know it was pretty hot down there at least for a few days last weekend, so that could have been pretty hard on them. Also I know most of the nurseries up here had their bare root roses out back at the beginning of the year, so this might have been a little late in the year to plant them. Hopefully someone who knows more about roses will come along and give you some ideas, but my general advice would be to see if you can rig up some shade over them, that ought to help. And also make sure you're watering them enough but not too much, I'd regularly check them by sticking your finger down a few inches into the soil to see if it's drying out or not.
