Port Angeles, WA(Zone 8b)

Tills ~ 6/17 is a Tuesday. Are you sure?

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

Made a Boo Boo Typing error, have new glasses coming.
6/21
Sorry.

Tills, I think you should definitely wait until the weather is better. Also, I am concerned that the spraypaint might not last, especially if the surface is not prepared adequately. Is it, by chance, Rustoleum brand for metal? That's pretty good stuff, but still I highly recommend that trailer be completely, squeeky clean (many hands make light work here), all rust spots sanded down to bare metal and primed, and the entire thing given a light coat of primer before the final color goes on. If you do shortcuts with paint, you end up regretting it in the long run, like having a gypsy wagon covered with flakey, peeling paint. It is likely, considering that there are probably a lot of home remodelers among this group, that we have supplies such as are required for this job sitting dormant in our respective garages. I know I have a ton of sanding equipment, possibly some primer, too. If the surface is well prepared the spray paint will adhere and last much better.

Probably 6/21 will not work for me as 6/23 is DH's birthday and we'll go somewhere that weekend.

Olympia, WA(Zone 7b)

I think that June 21st is looking good :0)

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

I was 'limited' on color options in the paint program... but it was fun getting a little 'creative' ^_^

Hey, maybe if you do this in June, I can come help out... I'll keep an eye on the thread

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

Thats is why I decided to pick 3 different dates there are 2 others

Olympia, WA(Zone 7b)

I can do the May 31st date.

Port Angeles, WA(Zone 8b)

I can do the 31st or the 7th, but not the 21st. But I'm with Pixy. I think the first party should be prepping, etc. Then maybe another one later to gussy it up!

Port Angeles, WA(Zone 8b)

Will need some help here, never painted a trailer before.

Whats the best way and easiest to get this thing ready for paint, I know to clean it first. going to rent a pressure washer If my well can handle it. if not scrub brush. It has no peeling or chips. the blue is what someone else has painted on it, found the real color. was originally a wood panel look.

It's the darn barometric pressure. I have one too. When it drops this fast, my sinuses go insane.

Tills, no worries. I have done very much painting in my life, including metal , although this is the first trailer I've participated in painting. Preparation is everything when painting. Think of it as having a good foundation on a house. If you don't prepare it well, the paint is going to look like heck in a year or less with the weather around here. You will need:

A cleaner called TSP - probably have it at Big Lots
Buckets and scrub brushes - we could bring our own
Gloves - again, we bring our own
Sandpaper to be used for metal, or I can bring my disc sander. I think we have one. Or is it a grinder? Well, that would work, too. That's to sand areas that have rust
A power washer would be good. Do you have one or know anyone who does? I have an attachment that goes on a hose, but I'm sure it's not as powerful as it needs to be.
Metal primer - I'll check our stock, other people can check their stock, too. It's the kind of thing that people have in their garage. You buy it for a small project, then have most of it left over.
Painter's tape - the blue kind. I think the Dollar store has it, but you might have it at Big Lots, too.
Paint brushes. We could bring the ones we already have and you could get a few at Big Lots.

I know you have bought the spray paint, but I think you should consider taking that back and buying a gallon of paint at Home Depot or Lowes. You can choose from millions of colors and you can get paint that is designed for outdoor use over metal. It's going to last longer and will likely end up being cheaper in the long run. That thing is going to take a huge number of spray cans of paint to cover it right. Also, I know at our Lowes that they sell their mis-mixed paint really cheap so sometimes I come across colors that are cool for very little money.

Those gypsy caravans are so extremely cool!! I love the designs. Have you thought about what kind of designs you might want on the outside, and what color besides purple? Are you thinking more of a lavender or more of a royal purple? I just painted my office the best shade of lavender. I mixed it myself and it turned out terrific! I call the color 'moon of tranquility'. Everyone loves it. If you went for a rich, rosy lavender on the main part of the trailer, then you could use any number of colors as your secondary colors for designs and accents. Or, a rich magenta would be beautiful, too. Then using silver and gold as accents? I was thinking of some of the designs we saw on the caravans . This is going to be so cool! You will love it! We have to take before and after shots.

We cross posted! I think we do that a lot. If you can rent a pressure washer, that would be great. I'll bet your dh is handy with them. I think we could all participate in the cleaning and it wouldn't take very long. Hope for a nice warm day and use a latex based primer. It dries fast then the painting will go quickly. Preparation takes way more time than the actual painting, except for the details.

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

The spray cans were really cheap no biggy. Not sure of the prime color as yet. I made some B/W prints of all sides, need to figure out how to sent them out so all can play with a design. I have none in my mind at this time I want this to be a PNW color me Trailer. Like the beanie babies color me bear. Each and everyone of us will have a footprint in it that comes.
She has no rust was well kept on the outside, not so good on the under side. was a hunting rig they took when they went out. and get this has new carpet.LOL
And my DH is going to do lunch, now thats scary. LOL

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

I hope to have it ready by then, I have my vac to work on it.

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

I went to the local Big Lots yesterday just to poke around. They had lots of outdoor decor metal things to hang on walls, sconces, etc. They had one design that was sort of a floral medallion in kind of a square, but with the point up. Only this one had a blue tinge to it. I thought that color might work with the purples?

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

I know and waiting for them to go on discount, which I know after 9 years they will go to 30% off plus my discount, what a seal. I know the drill. I have to be carefull, but if I can I will do it for you too.

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

Its bedtime, and I have some fur babies warming it for me.

Good Nite

Hi Tilly,
this is just an idea... but if you are going with the PNW theme, you could have each person who is helping you put their DG name somewhere on the trailer(?) you know kinda as a memory thing?
I am in a monthly seed swap and we are doing that with some aprons...cept the members are all over the US so we are shipping the aprons to each member to have them sign and doodle on them and keeping them as a DG souvenier.... I guess thats why the idea came to me :o)

I cant wait til I get to go on my vacaction up in WA and meet you all! I wish I had a bigger group of DGers here in my area now...but there doesnt seem to be a big collective group effort like you all have up there :o(

I know I could sure use a 'work party' here in my garden! LOL! someday soon I will be living closer to you all and can participate in your work parties, it sounds like so much fun!

I'll keep checking into your threads tho...if there IS one going on when I vacation up there...you can be sure I'll show up! :o)

nite all........

TIlls, thank you so much for offering, but I don't want to get you in trouble.

Anjl, with our weather, you keep talking about warm sunshine and it might not be all that hard to get some of us down there to visit...getting us to leave, however.....

Night everyone! :)

I knew Pix was the one to ask - what a pro!!!! Now, tils, this is where all the patience training comes in - Prep is prime! Listen to Pix on this, and you are going to be a happy happy bunny for years to come! This is so exciting!

Olympia, WA(Zone 7b)

Tils,
We have a small pressure washer that Carl uses to clean the concrete patios and deck. I would be happy to bring it to Dragonfly next Sunday for you, that would give you and DH a month to use it, plenty of time :0) Just let me know if you want me to bring it.

I must agree with Pix on this one, I think we should paint it with brushes, rollers and use the spray cans for accents, maybe the belly band? I helped my parents repaint the bumper on thier old travel trailer and just that took four cans!

I have paint brushes and rollers and paint trays that I can bring too. This is going to be so much fun!!

So cool! See Tills? A pressure washer has already been manifested!
a 'color me' trailer. Very cute! Very glad it has no rust. STill a light sanding is in order because you want the surface to be very, very slightly roughed up so the paint will hold. If I go to Lowe's today, (since the weather s**ks) I'll take a look at what they have in the paint dept. in terms of painting metal, with prices and colors. Maybe you could do more google searching on gypsy caravans to get more ideas for a design. If you see one you love, we could just use that as a jumping off point.
This is so cool I can hardly stand it. I love painting.

Burwash Weald, United Kingdom(Zone 9b)

A painted caravan - wait 'til you see this one:

You can build your own http://www.amvardo.com/caravan/ No cool colors, but that's not our fault.

Now we're talking: http://gypsywaggons.co.uk/varsuk.htm

Here's one set up as a permanent location. Note the porch and overhang. Your DH needs to get his tools. http://www.ravenwoodcastle.com/gypsywagon.htm

Take a look at this miniature: http://www.celticjuju.com/selling5.html

Finally found a site that shows some details of the decorative painting!! http://www.decorativepaintfinishes.co.uk/gallery.php?Catid=10#top If you find some you like, we could do simplified versions unless there is a true artist among us.

Here's one more that shows a wagon fairly close up. http://judykitsune.wordpress.com/2007/08/23/alittle-bit-of-england/

Your dh is so handy with the tools, maybe he could make little shutters for the windows? They wouldn't have to really close, just decorative ones.

AAKKK! Laurie, we were researching at the same time! Great minds always think alike!

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

Artist among us-doesn't Carla paint?

Pressure washer-looks like Rach beat me to it. I'd wanted to check with DH before I offered ours to make sure he wasn't planning a project I didn't know about. So, if you need a backup, check with me. :)

Burwash Weald, United Kingdom(Zone 9b)

Pix, we dance so well together! this is going to be a project with a difference! wonderfully exciting! don't forget to get outta some pink - and I love the idea of highlighting with gold/silver/bronze metalics - excellent.

I know that you can buy wooden carved accents at Lowes and other stores for putting over doorways and the like. I would be easy to get something like that and then just attach it after painting. Once Tills posts which wagon styles she really likes, I'll be on the lookout for stuff that will match!

Whidbey Island, WA(Zone 7a)

This has got to be the best project EVER!!!!

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

I am overwelmed. All

Got my work cut out for me and yes Rach. please bring, it I was going to rent one, put I would rather use the money elsewhere.

I'm going to take some pics of the metal art, that susy was taking about and see what we like.

Hugs
