Any idea of an expediant way to convert Grass for growing?

Westville, IL(Zone 5b)

I have an area that I need to convert to an herb garden for host plants in my butterfly garden. It is an odd shaped area and this sod removal is killing me.I have heard of the Lasagna method and it sounds great, but I don't have access to all of the various elements involved in it....then there is the time constraints, I really need this in the next 3 to four weeks. Will Newspaper and dirt on top of it work?.....I have tons of dirt to play with.....and mulch.

Sure it will work! Just lay down some cardboard or newspaper and layer on the dirt, plant and go! The sod underneath will die and compost itself.

Any idea as to how thick the dirt has to be in order to be effective?

I would guess that 4-6 inches would do the job. Even 2-3 inches would be okay but the thicker it is the less likely the grass will survive to push it's way up. The roots of your plants will make their way through to the soil under the paper in a very short time as the grass underneath rots.

Works for me........paper better the cardboard or vice versa

Doesn't really matter. just use what you have on hand. They will both break down and add to the soil eventually. In the meantime they block the grass long enough for it to die out.

I made my first bed using just newspaper covered with 5-6" of leaves for the winter. In spring it was wonderful.

This worked great for me, but I used at least 10 pages thick of newspaper, then just a couple inches of dirt on top.
