wonderful house plant / can't find right spelling ...

Olga, WA(Zone 8b)

trying to find care info on a plant that my 94 year old neighbor has given me.

it grew from tiny little corms that look like miniature fir cones.

it easily grows into lush maroon/green foliage and eventually is covered with tiny lavender flowers

she spells it 'achimine', or 'achimene' and pronounces it 'ah-ki-min-ee'.

any clues?

Achimenes?

Olga, WA(Zone 8b)

thanks folks! got it!

I have a feeling I have mine in a spot with too much light, some direct sunlight. And probably overwatering it; some leaves have been curling as if it's dry. Will try other methods and see what happens. thanks again...

I don't grow Achimenes but if I'm remembering correctly, this plant does go dormant ... so if you all of a sudden see it no more and think it's dead ... it's just resting and the rhizome should re-sprout in time.

Here's some info regarding the Achimenes: http://www.botany.com/achimenes.html
