i just got 4 trees...2 Katsura trees and 2 Sugar Maple trees, each approximately 1 and a 1/2 ft high. they are together in a very large pot with miracle gro soil. they are just leafing out. i plan on setting them out for the summer. my question is, come fall, will it be okay for them to remain in my home for the fall and winter, if i put them in the ground the following spring? i want them to have a good root system in place before i put them in the ground.
Need advice please
Make sure they're not in too warm/dry a space - I would suggest a mudroom, or porch where they won't get too much heat. If that's not possible, then I would suggest putting them in a sheltered spot outside, in their pots.
Outside, you can put them in a wooden box, with straw around the pots, to keep them from freezing, if the pots are the large type you purchase the trees & shrubs in. I wouldn't worry about the branches. "Dying down" would force the root system, in the spring, to expand.
Do not water them. If you were to water them, they would be "fooled" into believing it was spring, and start to bud, etc - then the water would freeze........which would be disasterous for the young tree.
Hope this helps.
btw - I overwintered a young Curly Willow in Winnipeg, using just the large pot, no box or straw, and it overwintered very well, indeed. It was just a rooted branch when I planted it. (and you know what Winnipeg winters are like, right?!?!) I suggested the box & straw, just because these may be more delicate trees,so....... better safe than sorry, I say!
thank you, this is very helpful. you answered my question exactly. again thank you.
you're welcome :-)
