I am planning a new garden along a west wall. The garden will begin getting shade by 2:30 and will be completely shady by 4:00 or so. WIll that affect what I can grow?
Thanks,

How Much Shade?
What time does it start getting sun? As a rule of thumb, if an area gets about 6 hrs of direct sun then it's considered full sun, about 4 hrs would be part sun, etc.
Having shade during the later part of the afternoon will also help expand your range of possible plants--in hot summer climates some plants labeled for full sun can't handle having the sun beat down on them during the hottest part of the day, but you don't have to worry about that since you've got shade during that time.
Thanks! I will have sun from sunrise on, usually 5:30 or 6:00. The afternoons do get pretty hot in June and July, so this could be a good thing.

Gardens along a wall are usually dry. Depending on what you are planning to have there, you can try this method: leave your plants in a container till you can see how much sun they get.It is easier to remove them if you see they are roasting in the summer's sun. I've tried it and it saved my a lot of digging work, since I had to change many plants
