Eggplant support?

New Iberia, LA

How do you support eggplants? I have a few Black Beauty in 5 gallon buckets this year and also built overhead support wires. Would you tie them with twine or just use cages? If you have pictures please post them.

Mine have never needed support, so I'll be interested to see what everyone has to say;)

You could use some of those hoops they make for supporting tall flowers. I use them on some of my plants to keep the wind from blowing them completely over. They come in various sizes. If you aren't familiar with them, they have the hoop with 3 "legs" that you can poke into the soil. The hoop size you buy would, of course, depend on what you need to support. If you look for them, they come folded up on a flat piece of cardboard. I've found them in the garden section at Wal Mart and they are very inexpensive. They are metal coated with vinyl so you could save them to use again.

I have never had to support eggplants either. But Black Beauty is a big plant with huge fruits. They may very well need help, when grown in a 5 gallon bucket as they are big enough to turn the bucket over. I would suggest a stake or wire cage. The hoop type tomatoe cages that various garden centers sell just are not strong enough,
