I'm very new to the whole gardening thing..... I was at Lowes the other day and I have a tendency to go to the "help me" section (aka the dying plant area) and bought myself an orchid. At 2.98 I'm calling this an experiment in my gardening, but I also don't want it to die! Any suggestions or help? The tag says Dendrobium orchid (Dendrobium hybrida). I've tried google, but nothing seems very helpful. Thanks!
Did I make a mistake?
From one new gardener to the next I first want to say welcome! You will get so much great info from the friendly people on this sight. I have found it very helpful to use the "PlantFiles" section of this site. All you have to do is enter the name of the plant (Dendrobium Orchid) and you should find valuable info there. I went to plantfiles to search for you, but since I don't know exactly what type of orchid you have I wasn't able to accurately decide which info is best. Give it a try. Just click on the GUides and Information tab at the top of your screen. PlantFiles is the first guide listed. Hope this helps...
Check out some of these Dendrobium's in Plant Files. Your plant should require the same care as any of these beauties: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/adv_search.php?searcher%5Bcommon%5D=&searcher%5Bfamily%5D=&searcher%5Bgenus%5D=dendrobium&searcher%5Bspecies%5D=&searcher%5Bcultivar%5D=&searcher%5Bhybridizer%5D=&search_prefs%5Bblank_cultivar%5D=&search_prefs%5Bsort_by%5D=rating&images_prefs=both&Search=Search
Thanks! Unfortunately, there are no blooms left (hence the cost of $2.98) and the stupid tag isn't much more help. I guess I'm going to have to semi-blindly follow plantfiles. It's a good start, though. Wish me luck!
I am no orchid expert but I do have about a dozen ... I had a heck of a time keeping them alive planted in the orchid bark so about 2 years ago I switched to straight long fiber spaghnum moss .... and mine have done so much better. I moved them all out to hang in the tree for the next 8 months! They do really well outside in our humidity! I just turn the hose on and water them about once a week unless we have a lot of rain and then the showers do the watering for me. I use Better Grow Bloom Boost Orchid Food and mix it in a big tub of water and just dunk them each one at at time. I have been so bad about feeding but am trying to get on a regular schedule of about once a month during the growing season.
Good luck with your new orchid! Most of mine came from the clearance table at Wal-Mart!
The care for most dendrobiums would be the same, you don't need to know exactly which one you have in order to take care of it.
