fertalizer

What is a good fertilizer for melons and veggies? I will have melons, pumkins, beans, peas, cucumbers, tomatos, peppers, eggplants, corn, sunflowers, dilweed.

Depending on the soil you already have, I would say the best is animal manure that has been well rotted, it helps keep some moisture in the soil, lets air in too, adds nutrients that the plants require and over time, makes your soil easier to work when you dig it, my next choice would be Blood/fish and bone meal, this adds all the nutrients that most veg will require and for a longer period than chemical feeds, both that I have mentioned are organic, so you dont need to worry about over feeding so much. hope this helps you, WeeNel.

noQgardener,

We have used wild fish bone meal and concentrated liquid fish fertilizer, as well as concentrated organic seaweed fertilizer on our Organic vegetable garden. We try to stay away from other animal products when we can, but that is just our preference. For those plants that relish a little lime, such as eggplants (for the calcium) and tomatoes, we add a bit of dolomite lime. Testing the pH of your soil is a good idea, but is not critical.

Hope that you get good results with your fruits & veggies,

You can buy ready mixed Blood/Fish and Bone Meal from the garden stores and it will tell you on the package what the spread is for fruit and veg fertilising, it is like the animal manure, organic if that's the way you want to grow your crops, the best way to garden in my mind, I would also recommend seaweed extracts as a good feed too, I also buy pelleted chicken manure as I cant always get it newly sourced to rot down before use, but as with all fresh animal manures, you cant use it fresh from the animals as it will be too strong and possibly burn the stems and roots or the plants so you must always let it rot down first, till it looks like nice rich composted soil. good luck with your new veg plot, you will soon learn as you go along. WeeNel.
